Think this will probably be the first GTA that I haven’t gotten at launch since GTA3. I have no doubt online will be the main focus considering the money it makes, but it doesn’t interest me at all. And while I expect the map to be meticulously crafted and a huge technical achievement I’m not sure how fun it will be to play.

I finished RDR2s story but didn’t really find the gameplay all that great - the mundane stuff you needed to do like bathe and brush your horse etc was more annoying than anything else and I don’t think they’ve ever managed to make shooting that satisfying considering how much of it you do in their games. The mission design got old quickly too. Go here, shoot, escape.

Might change my mind if we see any actual single player gameplay. It’s probably moot anyway as I won’t have something that will be able to run it half decently for a few years!

If they go down the realism route like they did with RDR2 it'll really damage the game. All people wanted was the fun of being a cowboy without having to clean your f*cking gun and brush your horse all the time.

Similarly here, if I have to refuel my car or have to take weapons out of the boot rather than just pull rocket launchers and sniper rifles out of my arse it's going to really make the game a chore to play.

it can’t get any worse than a phone call every 10 mins from your girlfriend or cousin asking to go bowling to be fair

I think it's going to be the greatest game ever! I just have to wait a year for the PC version.

I dunno. As I said on the Crimsom Desert thread, CD was made with a dev team of approx 250 a peak, ans a budget between 150-300 million, and created something amazing. So my expectations for GTA 6 with its 600 devs and 3 billion budget is probably unrealsitically high, and I suspect it will go the RDR2 route of realism > fun. There'll be fun there, but marred by realism.

I've always found that the games I've typically enjoyed the most have often been the ones I've gone into with minimal or reduced expectations. I'm going to try treat this the same way. If anything, RDR2 has helped temper my expectations a good bit. The amount of money and time they've spent, and the size of their teams etc isn't going to matter a damn if the core design isn't up to scratch.

I'm expecting a bit of fun, some nonsense, play it for 3-4 weeks, and then probably move on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 768 ✭✭✭Anois_

3-4 weeks it will probably take me about 12 weeks to play the game.

I play the single player game, finish the story, mess around on the map. Then I’m done. Probably clocks in at 50-60 hours. No interest in the online play or the inevitable PS6 and PS7 versions with shinier graphics

I've no interest in online either but for those 60 hours or so it would still take me 12 weeks. But I suppose if the game really sucks me in I may find time someway like just staying at home playing it at the weekends.

I hope I'm wrong, I would love if it brought back the joy of Vice City, and I'll openly admit i was wrong. But I dunno, I got a tingle that tells me it won't be as fun as previous games. And all that money and dev talent would be wasted if it's just a shinier version of 5. My comparison was to show much smaller teams and budgets can produce amazing results, so I expect mind blowing results from Rockstar now. Considering they haven't even hinted at a 60fps mode for consoles (specifically the Pro) on launch, I am worried it'll be visually amazing but not well optimised.

They generally don't do that on launch because they can flog a 'new and improved 60fps version' 6-12 months after release for a shameless cash in.

Yeah that’s my main worry too. I don’t mind realism when it adds atmosphere, but once it starts getting in the way of the chaos and freedom that GTA is supposed to be about, it just becomes busywork. I don’t want to be thinking about fuel, inventory management, or whether I cleaned my gun recently. Sometimes you just want to steal a car, cause absolute mayhem for an hour and log off happy.

I get the feeling the 250 devs are core devs. Just like the nonsense about the small team on E33, there's probably as many, if not more contractors working on it as well that wouldn't be counted towards the team count.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,095 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Probably, but its not 6000 anyway. My expectations for GTA remain firmly at "better be perfect".

Either that or Sony's sales have dipped after the price increases...

Any approx on the cost of this game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,095 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Well looking at the estimated figures, at approx $1.5 billion to make, they would need to sell over 30 million copies at $50 to break even. They're expected to sell 25 million copies in the first 24 hours. GTA V lifetime sales is 225 million, so at $50 they would make $11.25 billion. And none of that includes the goldmine that will be Online. So they could sell it at $20 a pop and would still turn a massive lifetime profit.

But it's modern Rockstar, so they'll charge $100 and it'll still be lapped up. At a minimum, the base game will be €80 I reckon.

Can someone explain to me (like I'm a child) how they make so much money from GTAV online?

I got it on the PS3 when it came out, played (and loved) the story a few times, but didn't dabble too much online as pretty much every online session I joined, I was by a country mile the weakest player every time so it became a bit pointless.. I did like the online rampage style games though, but never really went beyond that..

Queue over a decade later and I built a gaming PC, and started playing GTAV Enhanced story mode again… went online and was in some game where there was a target I/we had to take out? (capture the flag type of thing?), anyway I saw the target in their car, tried to pop off a few shots at them, and then they proceeded to kill me instantly, and every time I re-spawned…. about 10 times….. so I again decided Online wasn't for me!!

Do you buy in game money for real money? and that's how they earn from it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,849 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah there are microtransactions; you can buy in-game currency via "Shark Cards"

    https://gta.fandom.com/wiki/Cash_Cards

You can earn money in-game, or just spend your own real money to get in-game money. With the amount of on-going players GTA Online has, they're just printing money. GTAV has been in the top 10 games sales for most months even since release I believe so is obviously still constantly attracting new players who probably want to get all the fancy stuff quickly so spend real money on it.

I have played GTA Online since launch, even the Boards-ie crew has OG status, and never spent a penny online. Even when the release new free dlc and new properties and cars that cost a bomb, there's missions to go with them to earn the money, I've never felt like i was missing out on new content for not having enough money. I can only assume the earnings are purely from kids with open parents wallets and whale rich people ego but shark cards like jellies.

It must be because the player base is so large that is they sell the item, there's enough people that will buy it.

Reminds me of the show Mythic Quest where the mtx guy was bored from the lack of challenge on creating items people will buy so he made an in game sword and put it up for 1 million dollars knowing everyone would want it but no one would but it. It was bought as soon as it was uploaded.

They'll push the online side more this time, they want that recurring revenue.

I just hope it doesn't mess with the single player campaign

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,549 ✭✭✭✭Varik

They're probably going to try to seperate dollars and the paid currency this time around like in Red dead. Red dead didn't have enough stuff to buy with gold so it didn't matter buy you could only earn so much gold per day/week/whatever.

Have it as some fake cryptocurrency or maybe gold again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,849 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I always found the funniest part of Red Dead Online's monetary system was that in the single player, (pulling examples from the Red Dead Wiki) the Litchfield Repeater gun cost $145, same gun in Online cost $348. Pump action shotgun, $148 in single player, $266 Online.

Just made weapons etc cost more in Online for no reason other than increased grind or just buy mtxs to be able to afford stuff.

Pretty sure GTA Online was the same, where weapons/cars etc cost more in GTA Online than they did in single player.

A little bit annoyed that I'll have to go back in time 20-25 years ago and wait over a year for the PC release of this game.
