Anyone else having difficulty with Dublin marriage records for 1950? Every record I’ve clicked in the index so far comes up with Not Found.

Just searched Dublin marriages 1950 now and the first three results worked fine - maybe it was just a bit of maintenance.

Not working correctly for me, put in Dublin, Dublin North or Dublin South and it insists on giving all of County Dublin districts.

Choosing Dublin from the list at the side doesn't help. I've hear of this happening with other places as well.

This sort of behaviour seems intermittent, I seem to remember it working better re counties and districts named the same as counties. A search just now for later births 1880-1911 selecting 'Dublin' as district gives results for all districts in, or partially in, County Dublin, I seem to be getting the same or similar results if I pick 'Dublin North'.

If I select county Dublin district e.g. Balrothery in the initial search it seems to behave better only showing results for that district

It's been doing that for a while now - it's really poor form to miss something so basic.

I have a similar problem when searching Carrick on Shannon I also get results for Carrick on Suir!

Today Limerick was giving all the Limerick districts rather than just that one. But mostly I thought they had fixed it so you had to select Co. Limerick to get them all.

Maybe a typo. I have my grandmother's birth cert. I looked it up - no record online. Tried several times to no avail. I entered first name only and date of birth, location & got the record. The surname had been transcribed incorrectly. I corrected the record, checked there just now, record hasn't been corrected yet and that was some time ago.

I probably explained the position wrongly. The birth record is there alright but it's the link to document that's "not found".

On misspellings, my grandmother's name was Keane but like in many parts of the country they pronounced it like sugar cane. The registrars clearly took the phonetic route and I found it written as Kane, Cain or Caine more often that Keane. Similarly, she married an O'Meara and that often appeared as O'Mara or sometimes just Mara. Great fun tracking them down.

I did this for my grandmother and it wasn’t corrected and a nearly a year ago.

For quite some time, and as late as yesterday, I've been unable to look at the images for burials in the Church Records section of irishcenealogy.ie Also records for St. Georges seemed to have just disappeared.

Pleasantly surprised today to find both records and images! for St. Georges back on the site…

Morning, I was reading WDYTYA magazine April edition last evening. According to an article on page 11 re the missing GRO death records, a spokesperson for Dept of Social Protection told the magazine that there is computer system upgrade at the GRO at present. And it is "hoped" to complete the digitisation of the deaths registered from 1864 to 1870 and make the records available "later in 2026". I know it is only a "hope" but maybe good news.

The site is a little temperamental this morning, I've seen a critical Wordpress error, but yesterday evening the district/county filter was working better, even the Dublin North/South Co. Dublin and later 'Dublin' district records.. maybe it's being worked on at the moment ?

It's not working at all for me this morning. Just getting the critical wordpress error. I sent them an email about 930 but no response.

It seems to be back up, and the county/reg. district filter seems to be working much better - e.g. selecting County Dublin rather than Dublin North district shows results for all the districts at least partially in Co. Dublin. Selecting 'Dublin south' shows the correct Dublin south results only etc

Trying to cross check information on the census and keep getting this message ‘error establishing database connection’. Has anyone else had this or is it just at my end?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 456 ✭✭rhapsody

I am, generally fine after I wait a few second / up to a minute and reload.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭55Gem

That's working for me thanks rhapsody.

I noticed an error as I was finding the deaths of children missing from 1926 census.

Check out the first entry here

    4488311.pdf

Male child, 8 months, daughter of a clerk (should read son of a railway checker)

on the page before second from the bottom

    4488310.pdf

Female child, 8 years, daughter of a clerk

I'd say it was the 8s the made them lose their place.

It's not working for me. I'd say it's getting hammered.

In all the prep for the 1926, they forgot people would do genealogy too!

When I got the error 'establishing database connection' in Chrome, I copied the URL link, pasted it into Google to speed up the search. I also cross checked the 1901/1911 census for leads. Very satisfying day, with records found that have baffled for years.

Of course it is being 'hammered'. But, in inter-departmental Civil Service parlance, "That's their problem." Talking to each other and planning a system upgrade during a time when every politician is pontificating on what a great job the 'govverment' is doing on the release - well, that would be too commercial/businesslike!

There was ample time to consult on what should be done, how it should be managed and how pitfalls could be avoided. The links in / to the census site are awful, for e.g. why have "All Years" and then a separate tab for 1926? And if the links cannot be combined, why not rename 'All Years' as 'Pre-1911'. I've read somewhere that outsiders were asked for input - were they useless or were they not listened to?

There isn't an obligation on any Government to publish any records for free. I'm grateful to sit at home and browse online at any time day or night, instead of coming out crippled with neck and back ache from trawling microfiche in an uncomfortably hard chair in the library.

Are there many deaths that you'd expect to find on irishgenealogy.ie that aren't there?

I found a report in The Morning Mail, September 9th 1879 reporting the death of a James Kavanagh 70yo but I can't find a death record on the site.

Any ideas why this wouldn't be on the site and have you found other deaths that don't appear on the site?

There are lots of reasons why a death might not appear on the site and often it can be down to human error, either when the death was being registered or at some point since. In such case it might be worth contacting the GRO directly to see if they can find the record as it may be one that didn't get picked up when the records were digitised for the website.

I agree with Hermy - try the GRO. It would be very unusual for a coroner not to register a death (it's part of their work process). I wonder if the age given in the newspaper is correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 894 ✭✭✭sirpsycho

To contact the correct dept of GRO - is gro@welfare.ie the correct email if you are asking about birth/death records from a long time ago?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭mindhorn

That's the address I've used when enquiring about birth/death certs. Usually get a response on the same day as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,190 ✭✭✭Jellybaby_1

Is it busy at present? Lots of tourists about. I have a baptism record but never found a birth record. I won't pop in if its busy and that email address might be my next port of call.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 6,989 Mod ✭✭✭✭pinkypinky

They only open one day a week. You're much better off emailing them.

How much work is being done on the site currently? I had to request and pay for a certain death entry which was sent to me by email. Why wouldn't this be put on the site if gro could get it and email it to me within and hour?
