Just not natural for radio. I’ve not heard them in ages as it’s Christmas fm for last month

according to 2FM schedule, it looks like this is the case daily right through until saturday 3rd of January - no presenter on 2FM until 9am.

another new low for RTE and for 2FM !!

You can definitely see cut backs it's a petty the likes of Laura fox Emma power all learned there trade by doing holiday cover

Sometimes the presenter of the show isn't listed on the site even when there is someone hosting.

It says 2fm overnight from 9pm to 9am

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,181 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

it does yes, but 2FM overnights extends till 9am until Jan 3rd !!!!

no presenter this morning. just continous music, jingles, ads and promos, no news bulletins until 9am.

I think this would be normal enough for RTÉ at christmas time.

Radio 1's Morning Ireland starts at 8am. Today is on for 2 hours but lots of repeats or stands, Drive Time on the air for an hour, no Inside Sport, Liveline and half an hour for lunch time news.

Most back on 5 of Jan, TV news and CA in a similar position.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

not for 2FM. 2FM came on air with a presenter during previous Christmas at normal non-christmas start times (either 6am or 7am). but this year it's 9am.

Discovering lots of good new music on the New Music Show. Had never heard of Christian Loffler until last night. He's playing in the NCH this Saturday.

Also discovered Dave Nulty... the guy presenting last night was really knowledgeable.

It's a pity through station isn't braver with its daytime playlist.

With 2XM digital station shut down Dan Hegarty now only has 4 hours on the radio each week, the 4 hours with 2FM which are not live.

His 2XM shows was as far as I know the same show / a repeat of his 2FM show.

2FM have him on at 11pm 4 nights a week, but then they chose to play chart and recent music from 12 midnight to 6 am which is a bit much.

Wouldn't it make sense to have Dan on for 2 or 3 hours each night, 11pm to 1am at least?

One of the longest serving 2FM presenters of around 23 years (there are only a handful), but has he another role within RTE?

Bit of a cockup tonight with pre-recorded Mr Spring. Bulk of the show was random 2fm playlist filler, brief voicetracked bit just before midnight and then the track playing was cut off to go in to the Dave Clarke show that's always on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,181 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

I have heard this happen before on mr springs show, after the start at 10pm.

"The New Music Show" played a 2010 Rihanna album in completion tonight

I'd prefer it to be 2010 than 2026, but is that not a bit ridiculous for a show with that name?

So breakfast down around 8% of listeners and of course leads to other shows down also. They said drive up up a couple of thousands but I doubt that’s due to the two on it as one struggles to read a text message without making a mistake.

But let’s use new schedule as an excuse but morning show is so bad that it’s not surprising

They are finding their feet, you can't expect presenters never to make a mistake.

    2FM Breakfast - 121K

    Laura Fox - 120K

    Tracy Clifford - 105K

    2FM Drive - 126K

    2FM Weekend Breakfast - 55K and 29K

    2FM Weekend - 128K and 108K

    2FM Weekend Drive - 100K and 82K

    2FM Weekend Afternoon - 132K and 86K

and the excuses continue from Dan Healy.

We have experienced a small dip in our adult market share, which is not surprising when something new is introduced to a schedule. In February last year we introduced a new breakfast and evening drive show. Our evening drive show with Doireann Garrihy has had a solid start, and since October, Demi Isaac and Mikey O’Reilly have done very well holding the fort in that slot while Doireann is on maternity leave.”

How Dan Healy remains there is a mystery. Back to the usual excuse of blaming a moving schedule.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,181 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

he is RTE staff, correct? that might explain it.

The big moment will be when Lyric overtakes 2FM in share - currently it’s 3.1% vs 5.1% nationally but Lyric ahead in Dublin 4.7% vs 2.9% and Cork 3.9% vs 3.7%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭GSF

you can see why 2Fm don’t bother with breakfast shows over Christmas holidays anymore if only 29k listen on Sunday mornings, even less would tune in on BH’s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,743 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Did he not take over from people who move to different positions in RTÉ?

As you point out surely as the audience diminishes 2FM is much more of a public service then the popular Lyric FM!

2FM is a huge failure - and at taxpayers expense.

    But nothing seems to happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,575 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

I guess the big question is - should 2FM exist now? I'm in Cork and for most of the day I could put on 96FM, Red FM, Today FM or C103 and get current music that targets . There is also the wide availability of Spotify/etc.

So what market does 2FM serve that isn't available elsewhere in a better form?

You can make strong arguments for the retention of Radio 1, Lyric FM and Raidió na Gaeltachta as public service stations. I don't think you can for 2FM any more.

but is it providing any unique content not available on commercial radio - maybe a few shows outside of the prime hours but that’s about it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,483 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Pretty much the entire non daytime content of 2fm would struggle on commercial radio, excepting when stuff comes in and out of fashion - e.g. Dec Pierce is basically doing what the Electric Disco used to be 10 years ago, but that will ebb away in time.

time to re-brand 2FM as what is now RTE Gold

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,483 ✭✭✭✭L1011

I've been in favour of swapping Gold with either 2FM or RnaG's non Gaeltacht FM frequencies for decades; but it would require RTE offering the swapped out station on a permanent DAB/DAB+ system in return.

If 2FM was the 'victim' of such a swap, it should have no news/Nuacht, no celeb/influencer presenters once any existing contracts are up and focus a lot less on chart music.

I'm going to defend 2fm a bit here and say their music variety is far superior to the likes of GoLoud network and the Classic/Nova umbrella.

    This too shall pass.
