A lot of the sidings there were removed a few months ago. Brilliant planning on Irish Rail's end.

The yard was rearranged, and a new freight terminal built. They didn’t just remove the sidings.

The process for CPOs on dart+ south west started today.

Once again highlighting how weird the whole NDP thing is.

I'm surprised at the number of affected landowners. I thought it would be much lower.

There's a lot of sub surface stuff, for underpinning reinforcement along the section being quad tracked. Thats has lots of small site owners

Ideally they should not need cpo but our property laws are weird.

Do any of the affected property owners have to leave their homes to comply with the CPO requirements for Dart+ SW or is it just affect small sections of land that is being taken away from or near their homes?

Does anyone know if this is just the preparatory paperwork stage or will they require physical possession soon? Any previous experience of this process ? Thanks

I don't think there are any homes being purchased for any DART+ projects

Parts of gardens being taken to make room for the new track. Dont think anyone has to move out for the work.

They were required to issue CPOs by May 2026 or the CPOs would have expired and the railway order would have effectively been gone. Still no change to the funding situation but the Minister seems to be trying to spin this as some sort of progress.

When the new Spencer Dock is built what is the plan for Docklands apart from the station been taken down will Irish Rail keep the rail infastructure for parking trains or do CIE Group have there eyes on it to develop apartments?

@roadmaster Currently no plans for Docklands that have been made public . If DART Underground were to ever happen, the Docklands station would be needed while construction happens around Spencer Dock, so I suspect the platforms will remain even if the station building is stripped or torn down.

The short spur into Docklands station is not to be electrified according to the DART+W railway order drawings, but it's only 400 metres, so could be quickly done if needed in future.

Dart all messed up again this morning due to signalling issues. When is the new signalling system likely to be enabled, does it require the retirement of the 1980s trains? That's still years away.

8100 trains aren't getting ETCS. When ETCS is up and running, ATP and CAWS will still be in use, for a certain period, before it's switched off. While ETCS will be more reliable, it's also going to slow trains down.

Slower? Hardly seems possible. Someone on here claimed ETCS would reduce running times.

ETCS will reduce journey times on DART services as the current signalling setup is based on worst case braking performance, ETCS figures out where the next red signal or speed restriction is, does the math based on the trains braking performance, length etc and computes the speed profile to keep safe.

Current system really can only command 30/50/75/100kph, ETCS can command any speed

So currently you approach a yellow signal about 250-300m out the system enforces 50kph, then about 250-300 for the red signal you get 0kph and crawl forward. Under ETCS about 400m from the red signal the system will start to warn about a need to slow down and then will start to brake to come to a walking pace ahead of the red signal. Thats a huge change

Between Bray and Greystones its worth ~90 seconds

Sub-surface rights are not always a given thing in other countries. That's the vast bulk of whats being obtained.

To fund a bypass in Ballybrack no doubt.

Scratch that, fund an investigation into a preliminary investigation into a bypass.

Honestly this stuff is just shocking and we have folk here defending the Governments carry on

    Not a serious country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,260 ✭✭✭✭murphaph

In Athens at the moment. Quite frankly it's embarrassing that a country this poor is decades ahead of us in terms of this sort of infrastructure, even if it is a bit tatty in places.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,604 ✭✭✭bikeman1

Athens held the Olympics in 2004. As part of that bid they had to get their infrastructure up to spec or they wouldn’t have been able to host it. Said infrastructure nearly bankrupted the country. That’s why they have good transport there.

The rest of Greece leaves a lot to be desired transport wise.

Their first metro line was fully constructed and in operation in the 1950's though. The Athens Olympics was also 22 years ago now, so yeah, still decades ahead of us.

The first line dates from the 1860’s! It was originally a single track steam engine operated heavy rail line that even carried freight. It was electrified in the early 1900’s and gradually made more Metro like. It is mostly above ground with a 3km cut and cover section in the city center.

Line 1 is really more like DART or S-Bahn then Metro. Or at least that is how it started out.

Line 2 and 3 only started opening after 2000 and are more real Metro like (deep purpose built tunnels) and it was only after they opened was Line 1 actually renamed to Line 1 and a Metro and it got upgrades to make it more Metro like and integrate it with the two new lines.

I only mention this as it is an example of how a heavy rail line can be turned into a Metro. Something we could do over time with the DART network, making it more Metro like.

Arguably once DART+ and Metrolink is done, you could almost argue we will have 5 Metro like or if you prefer rapid transit lines, DART+ N, S, W, SW and Metrolink.

Yeah and they've got a couple of 25kv suburban routes that appear very under used to me. Interestingly the M3 metro has a few trains that are dual voltage. They go from third rail to 25kv overhead and share the suburban tracks out to the airport. The metro only goes every 30 mins to the airport but the suburban rail helps fill the gaps so it looks like a roughly 15 min frequency between city centre and airport. The airport itself was also built for the Olympics. The old one is still clearly visible on Google maps to the south of the city.

I can't think of a good use case for sharing lines like that in Dublin though.
