"all of the established reviews" don't agree, sorry. But hey, it's not like the anti-woke crowd don't have form in setting up a narrative and campaigning. Gamer-gate, Sad Puppies…

If you don't like the show - don't watch it?

I'm just…I miss when things were just about how good a show was or not. I really hate how things are now…things are "woke" or they are "not woke enough", or they are "awesome" or the "worst thing ever!".

Opinion on damn near everything seems to focus on what package of political leanings you tend to go for and ramped up to the high heavens.

In the middle of it all you have a viewer like myself just asking: Is it any good? Is it fun?

That's all that's ever mattered to me, but all of this noise around what should just be another Trek show just puts me off touching it at all. FFS, there's a Jem Hadar hybrid teaching at Starfleet F*cking Academy?! The DS9 fan in me would have loved to know about the story around that….but no…it's just not worth it.

I don't trust the quality of the shows anymore. Have been burned too many times now, and now all of this noise. I miss being able to just chat about fan theories on the Trek universe…about the ships…all that fun stuff. It's been a while….

I agree , why would anyone get their opinion fed to them by some gobshite on YouTube. Watch the show and make up your mind. Saying all the YouTubers say it’s brutal is bizzare to me. Anyways they are there to be outraged to get clicks, give extreme opinions or try to generate some sort of uproar that gets them more watches.

I’ve been watching Star Trek my whole life , from original series right up to now. I’ve enjoyed the first 3 episodes of this so far, it’s got a bit of “hope” in it and that’s what’s keeping me watching.

The world’s gone mad with the opinions of nobody’s. No one’s opinon of a tv show except your own matters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,862 ✭✭✭Tenzor07

People watched it as I did and disagreed, that’s not being “fed an opinion”. Dismissing criticism as “clickbait” is easier than addressing it. You enjoying it doesn’t make opposing reactions bizarre, and agreement among viewers online isn’t evidence of being fed an opinion either. Maybe they are onto something eh?

And complaining about “opinions from nobodies” while posting your own nobody opinion on Boards is…contradictory.🙄

I’m not dismissing anyone else’s opinion on boards. If you didn’t like it that’s fine. I’m not trying to convince you to like it. I’m just pointing out a lot of comments recently are referencing YouTube reviewers negative videos to back up their opinions of the show. Just watch it for yourselves and make your own mind up, which you have done and I can accept that.

One youtubers comment that I tuned into tonight "The studio is Gas lightening the negative views expressed on YT" are something like that from "The Kurtzman Trek NIGHTMARE Is Finally OVER!"

I usually absorb anything star trek that I can possibly can get. But haven't sourced or looked at this series yet. Nor have i watched any YouTube reviews of it.

It 2 seasons of a show that is already filmed, sealed and done. So it can't be edited based on viewer opinions. Unlikely to get a third season, so what is the point of watching. Especially when nothing of the concept of the show interests me.

As I am posting, I did enjoy this AI (slop) made Piss take of the show. Has some fun concepts, as I said didn't watch Academy, so don't know how accurate or not is on the show?

Thats frigging hilarious and yeah sums it up to a T

Christ that's one of the most excruciatingly awful things I've ever seen. Idiotic straw-man AI-slop garbage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,452 ✭✭✭corkie

I did say it was 'AI MADE', so you forewarned before viewing! (Maybe should have put 'slop' as well).

And as @fritzelly says it 'sums it up to a T', does not bode well for the show itself.

It doesn't sum anything up. I don't need to defend Starfleet Academy (it is, so far, mediocre at best) to point out that whatever idiot "prompted" that video just made up their own version of the show to object to, take the piss out of, and pander to right-wing dickheads for clicks and lols.

It's borderline fascist propaganda ffs. "The problems of the future didn't start in the future.. they started here and now, by being too soft and caring". All slopped together by some idiot in an afternoon of AI prompting.

Having to contend with **** half-baked new Star Trek series is bad enough, then this is the level of discourse around it. Depressing.

There is a very good chance Discovery was always going to be total sht but what certainly accelerated the process was listening to viewers opinions.

No show should ever change itself based on what viewers want to see. It's guaranteed to be a disaster.

"No show should ever change itself based on what viewers want to see. It's guaranteed to be a disaster."

I think most would agree that Picard Season 1 & 2 was way off the mark with any ST fans, so the producers listened to the fans and brought back the Enterprise-D and it was very well received with the viewers…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,676 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Picard season 3 was total sht. I couldn't care if fans got all fuzzy watching memberberries and Beverly running around with a player shotgun it was absolute crap. Picard should have put to bed after 1 season and something new done instead.

Shows should have a plot, plan and style and if it doesn't work kill them. Changing them constantly based on fanwankery just changes a sht show into a different sht show stumbling round like a zombie.

Honestly and truly, this used to be it. Star Trek. A fun TV show. Not a popular show by any means, a show that you'd get teased for watching tbh, but with a strong community that enjoyed imagining a better world. Treating people with respect. A strong moral compass. Exploration and discovery over bravado and machismo.

Now, not only are the shows turning into generic mush with familiar branding, but the community and discourse gets saturated with this "anti-woke" nonsense, claiming that diversity and inclusivity is where it's all gone wrong.

I was switching over to this thread for a bit of relief yesterday after reading and watching videos of the latest ICE murder in the USA, so yeah, that AI video really got me at a bad time.

Can't stand those AI videos though at the best of times. Absolute muck.

Can we maybe make this thread a SFA-free zone? It has 3 other threads in the ST forum for people to discuss it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,991 ✭✭✭JayRoc

I'd settle for never having to read the word "woke " again.

Obviously I've never heard it (in that context) in real life because wokeness or lack thereof is just an Internet thing. No one actually speaks like that in real life unless they're being sarcastic

I mentioned it in another thread but Star Trek is being dragged into stupid culture wars by the Americans and armies of opinionated *********es across social media

Star Trek at its core going back to 1960s is about a brighter better future of more exploration, wealth, equality, empathy and science and technology and logic triumphing over nonsense

This is diametrically opposed to the oligarchic dystopia that a certain lot are presently trying to create on both sides of the pond, hence the attacks and “outrage” at shows that dare to paint a better future that doesn’t involve being constantly depressed by the 24x7 Trump reality tv 💩 show

I am actually looking forward to next episode of Academy simply because I don’t want to see more bleak dystopian news about brave people being shot in the head on streets by modern day gestapo cosplayers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,676 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I remember seeing a lot of commentary over the years about how Star Wars popularity was people wanting to escape the bleakness of the time both in the real world and cinema.

I understand that now. I don't enjoy following internatuonal politics anymore because all nuance is gone. It's just drones regurgitating shte and unable to debate. I've totally regressed to watching sci-fi and sport.

Nah, wouldn't worry about anything in that video… that's taking the barest hints of things and blowing them up to full hyperbole to pretend the show is something it's not.

Now, it's not a great show, or even perhaps a good show, but there really isn't anything even remotely out of the ordinary on the woke/not woke scale… it's just a very normal silly teen school show with the Trek element very loosely thrown in. It's Sci-Fi Hogwarts, complete with quirky aloof headmaster. The odder disconnect I find is that it's written as if they're all 16 or 17, but they're playing people in their 20s, so the hijinks and behaviours just feel a bit off to me. For instance the last episode is a prank war between student groups including students getting surprise-apparated (sorry, beamed), and effectively features a space-mandrake. As I said, sci-fi hogwarts.

I wonder how much of it is troll bots.

Like the most popular streaming show in recent times has been "Pluribus" which has a lead who's female and gay, a co-lead who's female and "gay" (inverted commas because of the nature of the show) and actually no straight white male characters whatsoever from what I can tell. Which just tells me that the vast majority of people couldn't give a **** about the identity make-up of the cast, they just care if it's good TV or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,324 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

It may not have been this thread, but in one thread about SFA I mentioned I saw lots of headlines on nerd type websites about SFA getting so-called "Review bombed", and then in the comments section would be a myriad of comments of people saying how much they love the show.

I wondered if there was a reverse-bomb going on. "Our reviews are being hijacked by the anti-woookie brigade", and then they have a couple hundred bots ready to post comments about how much they love the show.

You would think Boards.ie would beyond the clutches of Troll bots, but I have noticed a few accounts with post numbers in the single digits saying how much they like the program.

I am not denying some people do seem to enjoy it, that's good for them, honestly I envy them.

I think the real tell is how many watched it on youtube for free - they can't fake that.

Studios have been known to pay for "good" reviews on IMDB and RT to counter the hate it crowd, even studios have been known to cherry pick lines from reviews to promote stuff when the review was anything but positive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,324 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

Well thats kind of my point. Even regular nerds who wanted to hate-watch it would have watched it for free on YT.

Ive had to unfollow all the Star trek related feeds on Facebook, because the comments sections are people gushing over how wonderful the new series is, and it makes you wonder, "Where did you watch it?" , because last I looked, less then the population of Leitrim town tuned in to it on YT.

I imagine a huge wack of Trek fans have Paramount.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,862 ✭✭✭Tenzor07

Just looking at the top 10 Streaming programmes and SF:Academy isn't there…

I think this shows just how unpopular this is, I know they’ve commissioned a 2nd season but if that doesn't make it into the charts then it definitely won't get a 3rd season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,676 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

    Maybe it's 11th.

Little chance of it ever getting a 3rd season given the way they cut all the other Trek shows short. It would have to be an absolute mammoth hit and that was never gonna happen. I'm shocked it got a 2nd so easily.

Probably won't see any new Trek for a while with ll this takeover stuff.

Speaking of Paramount+ I currently find myself in a bizzare limbo when it comes to legally streaming Trek.

Up here in Scandinavia, Paramount+ was closed down and got absorbed into another service called Sky Showtime. A bizzare branding mishmash of British Sky Broadcasting and the US-Based Showtime network.

Mrs. Rawr wanted to watch some other shows on that service, so we signed up and I have since been able to enjoy streaming the TOS & TNG Movies there. However they didn't have the pre-2009 TV shows…those were still on Netflix until a few weeks ago.

Ever since the end of Trek on Netflix, the only pre-2009 TV show to come over to Sky Showtime is…Enterprise? No TOS, no TNG, DS9 nor Voyager. They are all gone.

I'm assuming / hoping that this is just some admin shenanigans and that the rest of pre-2009 Trek TV will appear at the turn of the month…but nonsense like this does not help keep me away from comitting certrain maritime crimes in order to watch some Trek on my device. I hope they realise that.

Could be, can't see without paying for the full charts..

But you would think that a brand new high budget show would be up there in the Top 10

Will check again after the next episode is released.
