Booked this in for NCT this morning.

Got the option of several slots on Saturday morning to evening.

A quick wash and hopefully sails through as I doubt I've 1000 miles done in it since last one.

Suppose it's better to actually put up the work, but along with pads I relocated my battery to the boot and put a huge one in instead of the piddly Micra one that was in it. With all the mods, the smaller batteries don't have enough power to start it especially with the VW 180A alternator on it too

Needed to brighten it up. Today I added some light to my Model Y frunk. Turned out alright I think. .

That's nice - and useful - what did you do exactly?

Added a frunk light strip. The Vjoy one from Ali.

They are going to have to emissions test the hybrids surely. But of a joke as is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,167 ✭✭✭✭blade1

You're right about the joke part.

A test where you can put an additive in and give the car a good hard run to beat the test.

    No bearing on roadworthiness.

    Like the driving test.

Just be on your best behaviour for an hour or so during test and free to drive like a moron for the rest of your life.

Finally got around to changing the front discs and pads and a left front Calliper on the Mondy after the whole wheel nut debacle.

Nice TRW discs and ceramic pads, think they're called Dtec, and an Apec Calliper.

Excuse the filth of the wheel

    1000026442.jpg

The old one had a completely torn and missing boot cover. A disaster waiting to happen. First noticed the car veering to the right when braking and the caliper was difficult enough to get off so probably seized.

    1000026444.jpg

Everything went well and bled the new calliper and the other side just because, nice and firm pedal and she's ready for the NCT now.

Those ford wheel nuts are a disaster.

A 19.5 socket exists that fits them when they swell.

I know, that's what I use. Still tough to get off. I think they're even gone beyond that point, have new ones there I'll throw them on soon enough

Going back a few years now, but I used to the commercial testing.
If something failed the smoke test it often had an underlying issue. Modern diesels would barely even register on the opacity test.

The worst offenders were old turbo diesels that pootered around all year and the carbon would fall off with the first hard rev it had in 12 months

    1000120763.jpg

Bought a set of custom seat rails with tabs for a 5th gen Prelude already attached.

I couldn't believe my luck. It gives me much easier options to fit any seats I want now, the standard seats are pretty terrible.

I have my eye on a set of black Recaro's from a Corsa OPC.

Found a set of twin pot calipers from an Accord type R for 80% off.

Got a set of Brembo fast road pads with the same discount.

And the best part is, they're a direct replacement, I'll only need new carriers if I want bigger disks at a later stage.

Should be nice upgrade for not a lot of money.

    1000121412.jpg 1000121432.jpg

A few coats of etch primer and about five coats of red caliper paint.

I'll let them cure for a couple of days before I fit them.

Not too bad for a retired plasterer anyway.

    Edit.

Ignore the state of the place, the chap I rent with has it in bits.

    He's on thin ice!

    Managed to use this

    1000024805.jpg

Under the back of the car to move it into a different shed. There's a bolt I need to drill out in the rear subframe that's stopping me putting the rear suspension back on so this did the job.

    1000024807.jpg

Only slightly sketchy at times, uphill on gravel trying to do a 180 with it.

Added a coffee cup holder to my 86 Porsche 944.. 😅

I originally swapped out the ashtray with a replacement cup holder but it's just not deep enough.

Ended up using a clip on buggy cup holder which works grand.

I threw a random bid on this car on Copart a few weeks ago.

I got it for €450!. It was listed as inoperable and was supposed to have some electrical issues because of mice, nope.

The drains were blocked and the interior was flooded with water and the greenest green mold you've ever seen!

I stripped out the interior, cleared out the drains, bought and ozone machine, scrubbed the life out of it and and left a dehumidifier and heat gun running in it for a few days.

When it was dry and clean, I connected a good computer to it and everything checked out but it just wouldn't turn over.

Then I spotted that the dash kept saying to press the clutch to start even when I had it pressed. A €10 clutch switch and it started first time.

After I hit post here, I'm jumping onto Autodoc and ordering everything it needs and I'm going to go to town on it.

It's an S line with a full stamped service history and only 230kms on it.

There's lots to do but I'm looking forward to it.

I won't mind spending a few bob on it now for what cost me.

    Wish me luck!

Good luck! I bought novelty plates for my car and don't know how to take the frame off to replace the normal plates 🙃 😔

    1000070141.jpg

Picture is somewhat self explanatory, does not show the job took 2 hours and the purchase of a 200 euro trolley jack.

Releaseable cable ties are great as it took 3 or 4 goes to get them right.

Symptom was no screen wash. On purchase car said screen wash low. I was worried motor was burnt out due to running with no liquid. Previous owner said he changed pump before and pump failing is common issue. To remove pump you wiggle it out and screen wash goes everywhere. I used a funnel and bucket to catch 99%. Bench test of pump showed it makes noise so probably ok. Dodgy connection and contacts a bit green on the car side of connector. It looks like connector and pump don't 100% match or a locking clip is broken. That was that easy part. When I went to push the pump back in the black rubber seal went through the hole into the bottom of the tank. Eventually I made a metal hook with wire and pulled it back out.

Should pass an NCT now, when I fix all the other issues...then to try get an NCT appointment..

Changed my air filter. Only have the van for a month. God knows when the last owner changed it.

    image.jpeg image.jpeg

No after pic. You all know what a clean air filter looks like. Few missing horses restored with this change.

Have you changed the fuel filter yet?

Diesels love a new fuel filter.

That’s a good shout 👍 I’ll pick one up. Looks like a handy swap at the top of the engine (famous last words!)

Has anyone tried to put a mesh on the cowl under the bonnet? Want to stop the mess from the trees from getting in. The nasty little seeds that trees shed it’s just a nightmare to hoover out. Thinking some mesh on a Velcro covering the vents would do the trick.

Maybe just the photo but that air filter doesn't look massively dirty, but obviously blocking some air flow because the pleats are a bit crushed and out of shape

    😂

It was in absolute bits. There were insects between the pleats. Also found a 1/4” drive extension in the airbox so that was a bonus.

Speaking of dirty filters, check out these beauties I changed this morning!

It actually moved under it's own steam today too.

    Loads left to do.
