Just taxed the car for another year. Big deal I hear you cry.

08 focus 1.6 petrol. 514 euro. Have the car since 2010. This is a serious long term relationship.

The rear subframe is starting to look like the worst parts of the titanic 🙃

    Nct till April. Fingers crossed.

Carried out a full service on my MK4 mondeo and fixed a passenger side knock which turned out to be the drop link.

One end of it had just the slightest bit of play in and out, couldn't believe the noise it caused when driving.

As always, the fuel filter was a PITA to bleed

Changed a set of glow plugs on a 1.5 DCi. It was very slow to start and rough idle for a few minutes when it did.

Put a power probe on the old plugs and all 4 were completely dead.

    Before :

    and after:

I'm still about, somehow. Moving with the times

Hopefully actual fun stuff later this year...

In near 20 years of driving this never happened.. I rang the nct centre at 9:40am and asked to book in my 2010 avensis.. They offered me a test for 10:15am - so although the car was somewhat dirty it was presentable.. It passed - and my 8 years of ownership continues, the car is on 231k klms and going grand touch wood

After 6 weeks of wrong parts and only parts of the order arriving to the motor factors, I finally had all the parts to change the rear suspension on my MK2 Golf. 5 or 6 years ago getting parts for it was never a hassle but the manufacturers must not be making as many parts for these anymore.

Found a VW stamp in the bump stop so all these parts were likely original. If they last another 34 years, I'll be happy.

The before (note the state of the spring cap!):

The new parts, I did both sides, of course.

Took it out for a spin and although it never felt bad on the old parts, it's much more planted on the road.

Spotted the driver's side sill was in a state while doing this....

    Cui bono?

Changed my bog standard dash clocks for modded Convers+ ones.

It's as simple as two screws and a clip to replace. Corrected the mileage with Forscan.

This natty number was attempting to hold in the petrol and petrol fumes on my camper.

Found a company in the UK that specialises in only fuel caps and got a replacement that fits campers. New collar for the filler neck and a new locking cap. Much better.

    Cui bono?

Missus car failed the NCT so had a few repairs to do, 2012 ford focus.

Replaced a track rod end and cv boot clip flew away somewhere and boot came away from the hub, thoroughly cleaned the inside of the CV joint and applied some Lithium based Molyb grease.

Broken coil spring wasn't too bad to replace, only part I struggled with was lining up the little nib on the back of the strut into the hub when reinstalling.

Invested in this tool a while back hadn't used it till today, my god did it make a massive difference, easy to get the spring Compressed and off and no problem compressing the new spring right down made it easy to install the nut on top.

Sharp broken piece on the front bumper just filed it smooth and put some tape over it see If that's enough to get it to pass

Took about 3 hours altogether with a 20min break for some paddys day mammys schtew.

My crank pulley walked off just before Christmas on a back road in the middle of nowhere. That was some fun trying to nurse it home.

I decided to change the last of the oil seals on that side of the engine while I was in there. It's hard to find time to get stuff done these days but I'm hoping to get the car back on the road for the start of next month.

I've new clutch master cylinder and passenger side half shaft there as well.

It's got 105k miles on it. It's got a fsh though.

Replaced the shoes today. Most tedious job I’ve done so far, least it won’t need doing again for a long time.

Drums are a pain but as Scotty Kilmer said take a picture before you take it apart so when putting it back together you can look at where all the parts go.

Another step closer today. The engine is now back together and I changed as many seels as I could and used loads of Durko for extra insurance.

I'm gonna give it a couple of days to set and then I'm gonna throw in some fresh oil and pray it doesn't grenade itself when I turn the key.

Out of interest and I don't want to create a new thread.

Is there anyone or do dealers allow of keyless entry system install retrospectively?

Out with the old, in with the new. Next up is swapping old orange coolant for the new Ford green POAT.

  • Registered Users Posts: 430 ✭✭Luna84

What happened, as in why did it need to be changed?

  • Registered Users Posts: 190 ✭✭[Steve]

It had cracked on the underside. Quick fix so all good.

I did a few jobs yesterday…into the early hours of this morning.

2018 Leaf I bought 2 weeks ago for the OH.

The speedo was in miles and km. Changed out to one in km.

Found that the driver side heated seat button wasn't lighting up the seat symbol. Got a full replacement part from breakers and took the whole console apart to get at it….only to find some gobshíte had cut through the wire on the llom which lights the symbol and instead repairing it, had just pushed it under the insulation!! Awkward to repair, but a little solder and an inch of wire had it fixed in no time.

I replaced the gear selector surround trim you can see in the picture because it was pretty shabby and had been DIY re-sprayed.

Here's me halfway through pulling everything apart 😂

I picked up some alloys and wheels from the breakers. Got them on too. Very marmite opinions on these OEMs, but I think they really suit the car.

    After:

Tyres need a bit of product to darken them. They were covered in mud. I was so tired last night I forgot to take out the key-nut.

Picked it up after an engine rebuild. Got some light porting work done at the same time.

Did some numbers and figured it was more cost effective than replacing the car. It's definitely happier for it.

Isn't this your second time doing something with the engine? Didn't you replace the engine a few years ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 336 ✭✭Pat_bottom

Been doing too much to my car lately since last post here but nearly finished project.

    Engine swap

    Pollybush suspension

    Hardtop

    Wheels

    Paint

    Few new bits inside

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,367 ✭✭✭Dartz

It ate a sparkplug in 2018. Complete blue swan weirdness. Just swapped for a running engine from a wreck then then.

  • Registered Users Posts: 336 ✭✭Pat_bottom

Wouldn't be an old six cylinder beemer without an oil leak or two.. Did rocker gasket today

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,429 ✭✭✭hoodie6029

Love the colour and the wheels. 100% with you on the wheels, if you’re going to drive an EV there’s no point trying to blend in.

    Cui bono?

Today I added a roof rack to my Model 3. Easy to install. The hardest bit was the PPF bits the rubber feet rest on.

Should come in handy tomorrow when I collect a new headliner for the Leaf.

Put a hole through part of the wheel arch liner while checking for rot.

    Oh well. More patches time.

Destroyed the gearbox. Those metal bits seen on 5th driven gear used to be rear output shaft bearing. Seeing how nearby located bolt's head looks like give a hint how much damage did output shaft do inside the gearbox.

Anyway, the gearbox guy said overhaul would likely reach 2 thousand notes. It would definately be much cheaper to get 2nd hand one and replace aforementioned bearing as a precautionary measure, but the problem is, these boxes are rare as hen's teeth. Rang a few breakers - not a chance.

If anyone knows of C50 manual gearbox off Mk9 (2001-2007) Corolla 1.6 petrol or has any idea how to sort that out other way - please give me a shout. Otherwise, I'd have no option but to tow a car to a scrapyard and that's the last thing I would like to do with it.
