They don't even bother proof reading their articles anymore I see.

Mr Weckler must be on an earner from sky or another interested party

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,418 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

all sounds nice in theory, but is now unlikely to occur, people have had enough of providers, and have moved towards illegal means, the legal approach is done, people will very unlikely move back, no matter what

I wonder what is in it for Weckler as his articles aren't just poor journalism. They are deliberately misleading and full of scaremongering.

Is he just lazy and reprinting information given by Sky?

Is he being paid directly by Sky?

Or is Sky such a big buyer of advertising that they can put pressure on the paper to run these articles?

    I'm guessing it's the latter

Are Sky funding this nonsense? More money added to Sky packages for this media campaign

I'll say it again. The only way I can see end users being identified is completely based on some clown of a seller getting caught and giving up his customer list.

So if your seller is an idiot posting about the cash he's making or his location take steps to distance yourself. Find someone else or learn how to get setup yourself with everything IPTV related done through a VPN.

looks like we all might be forced to use vpn's soon enough, what are people using out there?

Sure not directly. As said above though. There are many ways they can influence via advertising etc.

People need to grow up when it comes to the discussion of IPTV in the media.

All Weckler is saying in that Indo article is that other countries have started fining users for dodgy box use and, with a change of legislation at some point in the future Ireland could start to do the same.

As a professional journalist he cannot in any way be seen to endorse the use of illegal streaming regardless of his own opinions.

Posters like yourself seem to get upset that he is not all out calling Sky c**ts.

If you want confirmation bias about how great dodgy boxes are just stay here, don't get worked up about what you read in the mainstream media.

The video repeated what everyone knows. That it is organised criminal gangs who are stealing the content. When they get it for nothing, it's easy to sell it cheap.

I wonder what the pushback is like in Greece and Italy.

When the music industry went after 12 year old girls for downloading Ricky Martin songs on Napster it was a terrible look.

Fining loads of ordinary people because they found an alternative to paying more and more in a more and more fragmented media landscape is not exactly a great look.

Just because he cant be seen to support illegal streaming doesnt mean there isnt some influence here.

    The Indo has form.

For example being rammed to the hilt with property adverts alongside articles from similar property "experts".

To say there is zero connection between advertising revenue and what content makes it into a paper like the Indo is a bit naive.

not necessarily, somebody must be paying to access the content, these criminal gangs must be paying to get access to the content to some extent, but of course theyre rebroadcasting it illegal, and for significant profits, they would have to invest significant amounts themselves, in order to setup a large operation

It was a fairly balanced article about how Ireland could follow other countries in targeting dodgy box users.

There is no misinformation or scare mongering in it.

It actually says that if Irish users are targeted then it will take time to get legislation through and it's not legislation that is high priority.

So it's not something that going to happen for a while if it happens at all.

But you still think it's some sort of plant by Sky ?

    Why ?

What's in it that makes you think it's a plant?

Or are you so paranoid and so drunk on the dodgy box KoolAid that any article that even suggests that dodgy box use could be under threat is some sort of of Sky driven propaganda.

As I said, stop reading the mainstream media about the world of dodgy boxes and stick to the filter bubble here.

If we are waiting on the Irish government to help solve the problem of 'dodgy boxes', hopefully they will solve it as fast as they solve the homelessness crisis, the housing crisis, the fishing crisis, the defective blocks crisis........

I think the reason people talk about Adrian Weckler is that it's always him. He brings out these articles every few months, usually with no actual new news in them, just repeating the facts.

Is his article fair? Yes. Was he fair on the indo sport podcast the other day and prime time too? Yes. But I just wonder why he brings it up spontaneously every few months.

Its filler content. Easy to regurgitate the same old stuff.

I had heard about Italy but not Greece before. The law in Greece was published in August 2025. It lays out clear information about the administrative fines. The link to the document would not open when I pasted it here. Below is a small extract. Elsewhere it says that the payment of a fine by an individual, does not stop the owners of the intellectual property which was stolen from taking a civil action against them to recover the lost revenue.

    Article 2

    Procedure for imposing administrative fines

    1. The procedure for imposing an administrative fine under paragraphs 1, 2, 2A and 2B of article 65A of law 2121/1993 (A' 25) is initiated by the competent control authorities, namely the Independent Authority of Public Revenue, the General Directorate of the Economic Crime Prosecution Body, the Interdepartmental Market Control Unit, the Police, Port and Customs Authorities, either ex officio or following a written complaint. Specifically for the violations of paragraph 2B, the procedure for imposing an administrative fine is also initiated following the transmission of information by the competent judicial authorities. In the event of a violation being detected, either following an on-site inspection, or based on information transmitted by the competent judicial authorities, which was collected and contained in a criminal case file drawn up following criminal prosecution for the crimes of article 66 of Law 2121/1993, the competent control authorities issue a declaratory act of violation.

    2. The act of ascertaining the violation for the violations of paragraphs 1, 2 and 2A of article 65A is drawn up in accordance with the Model in Annex 1 hereto and includes at least:

    a) The identity details of the offender (full name, patronymic, name of legal entity, registered office address of legal entity/residential address of natural person, Tax Identification Number),

    b) the number of illegal computer programs or servers or audio media,

    c) the amount of the fine provided for the violation,

    d) details of any previous violations for the application of the provisions on recidivism of paragraph 13 of article 66 of law 2121/1993 (A'25),

    e) the place where the offence was committed,

    f) mention of the beneficial provisions of paragraphs 10, 11 and 11A of article 66 of law 2121/1993 (A' 25) in case of unconditional payment of the administrative fine,

    g) a reference to the right to submit objections, the deadline for exercising them and the service before which they are submitted.

Not necessarily. Look at the music industry where people moved from illegal downloading to legal streaming. If a product is reasonably priced, easy to use and complete people will pay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,418 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

maybe, maybe not, but im not convinced, people are using these services for various different reasons, mostly for viewing live sports, but partly due to the disjointed nature of the whole industry, the fact, multiple subs are required to access all content wanted legally, and only one sub illegally, is a bit of an issue for the industry!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,571 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

The fine part I can understand - they find a seller, they get their client list, they can prove person x paid supplier y, done.

I do not see how any company could take a claim for civil damages though. Taking an Irish example, somebody might be using a dodgy service to watch sky products, but could be using it to watch overseas content, or movies not yet streaming, or Netflix content, or the BBC, or something else. How can they figure out what the person watched and who is entitled to the payout?

The card share servers know what you are watching.

Who says that don't seize some servers leave them running and take notes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭jj880

So why not give it a rest and do an article when the legislation is commenced in Ireland?

The constant rehashing of basically the same article from the same tech expert is getting played out. Whats your reasoning for that?

Now we have an image of someone in handcuffs. Yeah definitely not scaremongering 🤣. Is that really a "fairly balanced" view of the current state of play here on this issue?

As another poster pointed out it's filler.

But you seem to be annoyed by it.

Exactly it a slow news day when he prints that article. Judging the toys of out the pram attitude on here it probably generates a lot of clicks.

Lads just go onto GamsGo and get a VPN from Nord. Less than 30 quid a year.

Zero chance of a miracle of miracles happening, that a knock on the door will come.

Best thing I’ve ever invested in was a decent android box and VPN.
