You may be but the problem at least in the case of that one politician (not all) is you are thinking of the overall good of the country/people in it, common sense, logic etc

If you view it through the lens of greed, short termism and I get mine and bully everyone else and come out on top because I have pretty much every time before due to the extreme dysfunction and privilege I was born into etc etc ...its perfectly consistent....its not stupidity its sociopathy too and privilege and lack of humanity/empathy and greed and no class and incomptence all rolled into one cantankerous arrogant butterball...and never experiencing any meaningful consequences for any of that coupled with that lizard brain instinct for survival at everyone else's expense compounding into hubris and arrogance etc etc ....

It's testament to others stupidity, greed, arrogance he ever got to be in the position at all too.......

Trump Is not a strategic thinker. He loves the idea of breaking up NATO and he loves the idea of total control of the Americas.

We've already seen his proposed ambassador to Iceland say that Iceland is next to become the 52nd state and he'll become governor. Probably just bravado for now. But it shows its been discussed.

I saw a report on Youtube yesterday that 2 passages (one of them is called the Beaufort passage, which is West of Iceland) are melting. I think Trump wants to control trade routes.

You're wrong on that as you're equating a conflict in Greenland with a normal conflict, when its the furthest thing from.

Its not an arena that the US is set up for. Very few soldiers trained in artic warfare. Almost no equipment suitable for Artic conditions. They'd be relying on their supercarriers and sea support to win any conflict on land.

The US military has spent the last 100 years building a force designed to fight in deserts, jungles and relatively hospitable arenas (that is, your equipment or soldiers won't die in an hour if not getting everything perfect). Greenland is a completely different kettle of fish and they do not hold the upper hand in this particular zone. Northern European armies are leagues ahead.

Supposing, for the sake of this discussion, that the US and a coalition of European countries were to engage in a shooting war over Greenland…

The scope of the war wouldn't be contained to a skirmish in Greenland. The US has worked hand in glove with western Europe for a good 80 years. How many intelligence and espionage assets do they potentially have stashed around the continent? What kill switches do they have on European power grids? How much of European countries' arsenal is US-supplied and could be remotely disabled or relies on US support to run and maintain? I mean, we don't know, but I think the answer in each case is more than we should be comfortable with, and so my point is that there are potentially a lot of tools for the US to hit European countries with to make them sue for peace outside of this question of expertise in arctic warfare. That's before you even get to the matter of aerial bombardment and long range missiles.

It feels weird even talking about the matter because up until recent years the idea of the US and Europe going to war would have seemed remote to the point of absurdity, but so much of Trump's presidency is absurd, so…

I don't know if this will get sufficient traction

I remember when posters here were saying that America got through the first Trump presidency grand so people were being hysterical for being worried about a second….

Anyway, the frog is dead. George Floyd's killer got thrown in jail. The man who shot Renee Goode 3 times is getting federal protection. It's going to get worse from here, if you can believe that.

The EU and UK are puppies, they won't do anything no matter what the US does. Maybe a little whimper.

US bends over for Israel. More terrorist aggression from Israel and the US. Not even a mention of moving the World Cup.

International airlines are beginning to suspend flights to Iran as rhetoric from Washington raises fears of a possible direct attack by the US on the country.

Among some of the key regional players, Turkish Airlines has suspended all its flights to Tehran until Sunday. Qatar Airways, likewise, has cancelled its routes from Doha to the Iranian capital until Saturday, as well as Mashhad and Shiraz until further notice.

Passenger planes travelling with Emirates from Dubai will also face disruption on Friday and Saturday, although some services remain operational for the time being.

Cuts both ways, alot of US armaments require EU parts in order to work. If the US want to engage the EU directly they'll need to come to European waters. Europe would not be going to them. Without having Britain as a base the US wouldn't have even reached the beaches in WW2. It would be extremely difficult for them to wage war against the 2nd biggest and most technically advanced military in the world, 5000km from home, with no land base in an extremely unpopular war.

No one wants it, but there must be a line drawn in the sand. He will move further if allowed. You're talking about a person, who, if he owned the world, he'd want the moon. Brain of a toddler who thinks all the toys are his.

Germany, France snd Sweden are sending troops to Greenland so they're obviously taking this seriously.

Its getting ridiculous. Congress need to remove him immediately. I think Vance sees an opportunity here to push this so Trump gets jettisoned and he gets the top gig and rolls back to appear like the calm head.

People are entitled to their opinions. If I was in a different forum for example I might be getting all the likes and visa versa for those who disagree with me. I don't mind posting here though and do take on board certain facts presented to me that show things from another angle.

Reports of a shooting involving the Feds in Minneapolis.

Governor Tim Walz say its no longer about immigration enforcement and is now a crackdown on Minnesotans.

Someone on CNN says the ICE agents are under-trained and not trained in escalation.

It’s East India Company thinking c. 1700. Technology has shrunk the globe. If China leaps ahead in key areas then oceans won’t insulate the Americas from that.

Well-trained officers calm situations down and minimize the risk of deadly force being required. It’s a counter-intuitive approach that has to be learned through good programs.

It's also a potential source of economic pressure on Europe.

Europe needs to stop being vassals of this regime.

I avoid Trump in discussions with Americans. But I'm wondering is that the right approach? Do we want Americans thinking the world is okay with what he is doing?

In the 1930s people were also afraid of Hitler.

UAW says it will protect the job of the suspended worker who heckled Trump at the Ford factory.

In fairness, the Iranian military is probably fairly jumpy at the moment and no civilian flights should be going anywhere near Iran that don’t have to. In Canada, we still have vivid memories of this incident:

The Trump administration confirmed it completed the first $500 million sale of Venezuelan oil and expects additional sales in the coming days and weeks.Trump previously said he plans to mobilize major U.S. oil companies to invest billions to fix Venezuela’s broken oil infrastructure.

I had to go to a funeral there last year and I just kept my trap shut until I was back in Canada. If I’d responded to what was being said, Lord knows where I would have ended up.

I have a relative from Ireland but married to a Republican. So probably a politician though I'm not sure. He doesn't mention Trump at least not when talking to me. I don't think he knows my views on Trump.

That brings to mind the infamous phrase used by Kellyanne Conway, a Trump advisor in the first Trump regime: " .... alternative facts"

The actual meaning of "alternative facts" was clearly "made-up bullsh1t" presented as an alternative to the truth.

I wonder how the US would react if a foreign country issued statements along the lines 'Hang in there guys, keep protesting against the regime stormtroopers'

I saw a politician saying yesterday that ICE are being used aggressively against anyone who is not a Trump supporter. We're essentially heading into authoritarian dictatorship stuff - early days, but it is still happening.

Not if the discussion resolved around the many aspects of Trump I disagree with. And there lies my point. Simple as that.

UK has sent an officer to Greenland at Denmark's to assist in the defence of the country from the US military. Which is half of what Norway is sending.

ICE ( or Trumps proud boys) don't catch criminals, they hire them! A horrible country has become even more despicable.

What harm is there in giving violent, uneducated racists with questionable backgrounds military grade weapons to join a private paramilitary group under the control of fascists immunity to seize and detain anyone they want?

What harm is there in sending them into communities to intimidate, assault, batter and kill civilians without cause?

    What could possibly go wrong?
