I dont know. I think this next 18 months will be fairly different, I don't think the IRFU are going to appoint a coach like Lancaster to connacht and not back him to a degree.

    Ospreys (11pts)

    v

     Montpellier(15)

    Connacht (8)

    v

     Montauban(2)

8 of the 9 top 3 finishers in the pool stage get a home second round game. The teams in 3rd and 4th in pool 2 are only on 6pts now so the max they can is 11. So whoever finishes 3rd in that group looks like they won't get the home second round game.

Connacht should get the tbp win next week which puts them on 13pts but Zebre should get the win putting them on 13pts. Connacht have a much better points difference, 43 points better, so they'd finish ahead of them in the pool. Zebre will prob get the tbp though putting them on 14pts. If Ospreys beat Montpellier they'll finish on 15 so that means Connacht will finish 4th in the pool and will be away in the second round. If Montpellier win then that means Connacht will get third at least. Ospreys could finish with 13pts but have a much inferior points difference, 37 points better, so Connacht would still finish ahead of em.

Best scenario is Connacht tbp win, Montpellier win and Black Lion win or Zebre win but no tbp meaning Connacht finish 2nd and will be seeded somewhere in the 4-6 bracket.

Worst realistic scenario is Ospreys win and Zebre win with tbp and Connacht win meaning Connacht finish 4th and will be seeded somewhere in the 14-16 bracket.

I just don't see any situation of Connacht losing and Black Lion winning which is the real worst scenario.

There was a poor passing mistake made and a bizarre refereeing decision. Let's not be too hasty in our analysis.

What most Connacht fans wish to see is improvement. We are not world beaters but on our day we can be very good. And I think Lancaster is getting there. Indeed I'm surprised how quickly he is getting there. He is starting to make decisions that Wilkins would never have made. And he is only a few months into the job.

And if folks can't see that well they simply have not been watching Connacht over the last four years. I think by the end of this season a lot of things will be very much in the right place moving forward

our open play defence is non existent- as stated some fantastic go forward plays but shape isnt there when we are caught on the hop - they cut through us very easily and no-one at home- need a leader on the pitch- we aint got one!

"Throwing away the lead is never good but it was a heady mix of fatigue, bad luck, mistakes and callowness. We need to stop doing it but this isn't the game to be most upset about it."

same all season tbh - a leader and game management should sort it out- we start at 100miles an hour build a lead and then run out of puff and implode - rinse & repeat

I think IRFU was trying to get the provinces with all with a top class professional coaching outfit (mostly home grown)… Connacht was their first attempt and that went really wrong…

Richie Murphy was their second attempt and while that started rocky, it is looking very good right now… IRFU has a stable of Coaches in Ulster… Proven professionals, a place you would have no problem sending a young bright star who might need a bit of encouragement…

A former Connacht assistant coach said that in places like Leinster they are so big, you can get a bit lost.. You aren't preparing for matches, the pressure is about looking good enough for a renewal not working with the main technical coaches seeing how you are going to win on Saturday. The first pressure can subdue a player the second could excel one. Compare Harry West to Henry McClearan right now.

Lancaster and Connacht are very much next… I don't think they are worrying about the next 6 months results but they are not wasting them either… I wouldn't be surprised if Lancaster might be asking for loan of academy players to help the IRFU and thus get some payback too… e.g. a loan of Conor O'TIGHEARNAIGH to Connacht until end of season(only played 13 min this season), maybe Alan Spicer for 18 months…

What I am saying is there is better way of sharing resources without inhibiting Leinster, actually it could enhance them… As long we have share out and share back policy… So if Alan Spicer turns out to be the next Devin Toner and Leinster really need him back, they just give us one of their next coming star… Not perfect, probably annoyed if he left, but you wouldget him the first place without that mutual understanding…

In Leinster's are effectively sending a bright new prospect to the minors to get game time and learn the ropes of professionalism… In Connacht head, we get a kid and use him and some will stay and some will leave (that happens today anyway)… To Connacht fans, we would be getting the internationals for 3-7 years time playing for us…

    Not from yesterday…

Connacht gave up two maul tries and try from a mental/communication error (ball throw to unexpected receiver) and block down…

None of them were from line breaks… Defending yesterday was a vast improvement…

That doesn't mean it is solved… We are still liable to get flustered and loose shape, but we showed we can defend it just isn't default yet… Dragons and Leinster shows we can loose our connection and trust with other, but that will come with time… Lancaster is teaching a lot of kids who are only entering pro rugby, these are not all seasoned pros… And our seasoned pros have spent the last two years effectively been uncoached, Lancaster had some job ahead of him and he is still without a dedicated defence coach, only province in Ireland.

It is why you can see Sam Gilbert take it up so quickly, he was never in Vietnam.

That was always the main risk… If we didn't start at 100mph we would have been left in the blocks… You goto France you get a lead, if the french get on top you are going to be gutted alive…

Connacht were very unlucky on the disallowed try… That became a penalty against us and they scored of that… That was a 14 point swing…

What was amazing about that game is how Connacht moved the ball so quickly that the Monpellier pack could pin them down… Monpellier were good deal bigger, stronger and more experienced… Connacht were living on being quicker and more dynamic. that works until they bring on their subs…

By the way… had a look at a few tries there

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6FIfwyu5ls

    Sexton was offside at 2:16…

    Another offside (Clermont) on 3:35

    Leinster again at 4:21

Seems odd we then get pulled for it… Consistency

It's interesting that we now have Gilbert and Naughton as place kickers when for the last decade we have struggled. I really hope Naughton takes on the 10 role and smashes it. I see him as the future Irish out half. Let's be honest Crowley and Prendergast ain't exactly what anyone wants for Ireland.

There are so many fine players coming through the grades. Of course we have to change this Irish mentality and embrace change. That mentality has never materialized but hopefully some day it will

Sexton one isn't anywhere near as clear cut as the Clermont one. Mcgrath picks the ball and takes at least 5 steps with it before passing, that's more than enough time for sexton to make up 5 meters.

The Clermont one is an immediate flat pass from the base, so the receiver had to have been offside.

Sorry, got my time wrong… mixed up with the later one…

    Another one at 4:43 Cipraini…

There is a few… I wouldn't want them to be pulled back for them either… Great tries..

    https://www.connachtrugby.ie/news/squad-update-tuesday-13th-january/bp3607/

Heffernan, Aungier, Matthew Devine, Carty, and Naughton available this week.

Blade and Reilly hopefully available for Leinster.

Bealham and Ioane have short term injuries.

Gavin and Bolton out for three months.

No update on Lasisi, Dowling, Hurley-Langton, Hansen, or Ralston.

Given the injuries, I'd like to see this weekend:

15-9, 1-8: West, Jennings, Hawkshaw, J Devine, Treacy, Naughton, M Devine; Duggan, de Buitléar, Illo, N Murray, O'Connor, S O'Brien, McCormack, Boyle

16-23: Heffernan, Dooley, Aungier, Joyce, Flynn, B Murphy, Carty, Mullins

I didn't see the Connacht match. What was the try called back for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,424 ✭✭✭testtech05

Ioane had encroached inside 5m of the scrum on the halfway when the ball was taken from the scrum by Murphy (as almost every attacking 10 does at every scrum in a game)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

Think it might be useful to give West another run at 13. It's a problem position for us.

Naughton, jennings West Bundi Tracey Carty Devine Duggan De Butlair Illo, NMurray Joyce sob, Flynn, Boyle.

Heffernan Dooley Aungier O Connor J Murphy bmurphy Hawkshaw mullins

I'd be hoping we could get this side out for Leinster.

Gilbert Jennings Forde Bundi Tracey ioane Murphy Boyle Prendergast Murphy Joyce D Murray Bealham Heffernan Dooley.

DTM Buckley Aungier O'Connor jansen Devine Naughton West/Mullins

Cheers. Can't remember seeing that called off a scrum before but I've seen called off a line out. Technically correct but frustrating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

The Montabaun game is an opportunity to learn. Putting Naughton at fullback, Bundee in the centre and Jack at out half is simply pointless. What is to learnt other than Sean is a good fullback, Bundee is slow and Jack brings limited value at 10. We know all this already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,236 ✭✭✭CowboyTed

Want to try West at 13… That could be very interesting considering Gavin gone for three months…

I want to play Sean at 10 but with Carty fit and Ione coming back next week I think I would stick Sean at 15 with thoughts of moving him to 10 later on… (hopefully 30 min)

I might also go for Bohan starting on openside. Was very impressed with his scrummaging on Sunday… But we might need him for Leinster (changed my mind while writing sentence).

McCormack needs to get a shot but I wouldn't be trying him and Flynn at the same game… I would pick one…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,236 ✭✭✭CowboyTed

I would go Forde and West/Gilbert as centre pairing and bring on Bundi…

Could have Sean at Full back if using Sam…

Was really impressed by West on Sunday… His defence was the real surprise, was very good.

Jansen is high quality player from the bench.. Toss up with Boyle.

And this selection makes no sense either. Why would you have D Murray over N Murray. And why would you have Joyce named in both teams when it was clear from last week's game that Josh Murphy with Niall Murray were rock solid with DTM at hooker. And why would you drop Jack after the Montabaun game. Why you play him in the first place in the Montabaun game. And why would you play Bundee at outside centre when Forde and West looked really good last week.

I went for Naughton at 10 but I guess with Gavin out long term there's a case that establishing a 13 is a bigger priority right now.

I don't think Bealham will be available for Leinster. I'd much rather Duggan or even Bohan off the bench, I just think Buckley and DTM together are way too undersized. Would like to see us bench Bundee, Forde's been outplaying him for years now (in a Connacht shirt) and doesn't bring the same impact at 13. Keep the partnership with West together if they have another good game together vs Montauban.

Fair comments. Murphy, Prendergast, and Jansen have a lot of mileage already this season, I think all three could really do with a weekend off. That would necessitate both McCormack and Flynn in the 23, unless you went with Niall Murray at 6 (which I wouldn't be opposed to).

Rugbypass are speculating Connacht are going to sign Bath LHP Francois van Wyk for next season. He turns 35 during the summer.

Don't know too much about him, but he's been in most of Bath's match squads this season (12 games, 1 start), including playing the last 18 mins or so against Munster.

We are being linked with Bath loosehead Francois van Wyk. He's getting on a bit but is a good player, Bath mainly use him off the bench and he's very effective in that role.
