Just to add I've been supporting Connacht since 2000 so maybe my expectations are lower than a fan whose been supporting since 2015. I've seen lots of awfull performances in Wales over the years even some recent ones

Connacht were 1/3 favs in this. Who have we beaten this year? Its a joke

Trying to think the last time we were this bad....... can't.

Nothing is right, no one is doing anything. This could be anything at this point.

The Dragons look World Class here!...

    What a disgraceful performance...

This is really shocking. Getting absolutely hammered by the Dragons.

There’s a strong argument this is the worst performance from any Irish side in the past 20 years.

    Genuinely shocking performance.

Worst Connacht performance I’ve ever seen. Seen them get destroyed before but usually by top class sides like Bordeaux. Not the Dragons.

Sam Gilbert wasn't awful, and that's the best that can be said about this game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

Gilbert looked decent with the boot, one horrible off load in the middle of the park led to a dragons try but in fairness he looks like he might be good when he gets a few teammates on the same wave length.

I was concerned when I saw our team selection. I would always go heavy away in Wales and expected to see almost any second row pairing except the two Murrays. Always going to be a scrap, you need the power you'd get from Joyce, Murphy, Doc and SHL.

Prendergast has some engine on him, and in reference to earlier posts about him he does struggle at the contact line, a bit like pom did. But hes playing the game being asked of him and trying to make up for our lack of punch in others.

Bundi has lost a little power and pace, needs a slight adjustment to how he plays. Offers us so much in terms of rugby IQ but has to adapt. Not sure how to get him and Forde in the side.

A night that won't be forgotten for a very long time.

Was it a weakened team sent out tonight?

Didn't get to see the game and I'm glad.

I think it's time to decide on starters now and stop trying to give everyone a game.

Stuart did an interview with Joe Molloy this week. It was very good as expected with a brilliant interviewer and interviewee.

He was asked about whether he knew who his strongest 23 were and while I expect him the be somewhat diplomatic he alluded to the fact he's not quite there yet and not helped by not having his 3 internationals either hasn't helped.

He also mentioned about time being required to change a culture. He has a lot of work to do but I don't think you'd want anyone else in that role right now.

I think he's the perfect guy to make the whole set up from the academy all the way through into a more professional outfit.

He's talking to everyone from AIL and junior club coaches to the lead people in all those clubs. He's obviously looking for a togetherness approach where every talented player is brought to the attention of Connacht.

Our academy is very good right now but he'll make it Leinster good.

That's what we've got, a guy who improves everything.

Now we were awful last year but the talent is there to be a lot better so we need to see improvement soon.

I know we have been a basket case for years with results but that surely must be one of the worst in a long long time (thankfully I didn't get to see much of it) I was very positive when Lancaster took over and I am in agreement it will take time to sort everything out but losing to a team who haven't won a game in over a year in the league like that is really really poor.

Out of internet, how will Lancaster make the Connacht academy Leinster good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

Happened to watch the Leinster Dragons game. Dragons were very close for most of that game and deserved much more respect than Connacht provided with its team selection

In fairness I thought the Dragons were excellent last night. Really aggressive in all aspects and didn't take the foot off the pedal at any stage.

They started with a game plan, it worked and we were not able to react. With Ioane and Bundee playing we had no kicking from hand options which meant their blitz defence had us under serious pressure. The fact this wasn't anticipated or rectified is a failure of management. We absolutely have the squad to match all bar two teams in the URC. There are serious coaching issues, particularly in defence. We still have issues at out half but everywhere else we are loaded with options.

It is absolutely not all down to Lancaster and he is still entitled to a free ride for the time being, but if there isn't a significant improvement by 6 nations time I would start asking questions.

"In fairness I thought the Dragons were excellent last night."

    That looks so odd 😂

However, fair play to them an I hope they follow it up with good results in their derbies. It would be great for the league and for Wales

I haven't heard much chat about 'Stusdays' training sessions. Is he still doing that kind of match fitness training?

I think leinster was a very fit team which helped them do everything a bit more precisely. Maybe it will take time to improve the fitness and sharpness. Difficult improve fitness and play matches at peak level. There's bound to be a period where they're more tired than normal.

So I wonder if Connacht are in for a brutal pre-season next year and then we'll see things cone together?

Yes. He also mentioned that in the interview, but it's still a new enough concept in Connacht by the sounds of things.

Turned over to the Arsenal game at HT and I don't even follow football, the connacht game was that bad. Funny thing is I reckon connacht will beat ulster next week, no consistency. Just writing this season off as a reset for Stuart. Reckon the whole culture in Connacht up until now is cozy with a handful of good players dragging results out for the group. Stuart is a top class coach with bargain basement players, will take a while to work his magic.

Duggan was poor along with Illo and it was the right decision to pull both at half time. Has that been done by an Irish team before ? Dragons rush defence kept us back with no kicks over the top. Its great having the Murrays but they are underpowered and with an under powered front row it was a tough outing until half time. There's a lot of dead wood in the squad but where and who do we approach to get replacements. Also a mention for the Dragons performance. They were outstanding and I thinks the best I've ever seen them play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭Joma4good

Connacht just looked to me as though they had come to play their game and trust their process but without enough fire and aggression and when things went wrong like the missed penalty to touch they completely went into their shells. Fair play to the Dragons once they got a sniff they were ruthless and showed all the physicality that Connacht lacked. I think it was just a night where everything that could go wrong, did. I really hope they can find a way to lift themselves for next few weeks fixtures as it was the worse possible time of the season to have such an implosion.

    A massively underpowered front five.

    Poor half backs.

    A 300 year old Bundee.

What is it for Connacht about Welsh away fixtures? They have rarely performed with any real consistency away in Wales. Is it an attitude problem? Is it culture/ professionalism? Is it leadership across management and players?

Whatever it is it stinks. I think it’s time for a few home truths from Lancaster or this season will get ugly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

I think what you say about truths is exactly where this team and management needs to go. This is not a shabby team but there needs to be a bit of honesty discussed internally to address the issues.

To be fair to the Dragons they beat Lyon in the challenge up and gave Leinster a serious game before that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

Indeed they did. And as for a weak front five well I don't disagree which is why 6 to 8 needs to compensate. The Murrays tend to get the lineout working but they are light which means you need beef in the back row. And that's what was missing yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 43,004 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The Murrays are in the second row. Why would you be looking to beef up the back row to compensate? Wouldn't you be looking to beef up the second row? I'd be of the opinion that we need to replace Niall Murray.

Agreed. We can't go with the two Murrays in the row ever again. Not enough beef. Limited as he is skill-wise we may need to play Joyce there or Josh Murphy. We were too late bringing on Jansen yesterday for Boyle who struggled, and we are very short now at loose head. Duggan struggles and Bucks doesn't have it anymore.
