Only joined near the end but really good from what I got to watch. It was recorded and going to be on Youtube soon.

The advice echoes this thread highly recommending Keltic Rembrandt, Ardlea Rigby and Ardlea Rolex.

I got to ask if myostatin affected milk. If a bull has one Q gene and has two daughters, one with the Q gene and one without, would their milk be different and all evidence says no, It doesn't affect milk. Good to know.

I agree I thought it was very good also. She had great things to say about omega and Ricky. I would agree with her on that. They have great things to say about octopus the blue bull aswell along with Edison

Any suggestions for a nice easy calf for heifers, some at 2yrs? Normal heifers, not muscular or big. Mix of AAX, SHX SAX etc. I used to use an old AA straw from Dovea and they don’t have him anymore. I’d rather go with an Angus again and keep the SA or LM for 2nd calving. I have one heifer in calf to Keakil Prime Lad but my first time using so I don’t know know how he turns out but seem to be small calving. I’d rather have a small calf and all come out ok rather than having trouble. Anyone used INTELAGRI MATTEO ET from Munster? Buy my own straws so no issue there.

From the Munster event last night, will be on their youtube later today...

She recommended checking the no of records and then the difficulty, and note the carcass weight to make your own call then of what u want

Put Manclaux on your heifers, super bull, the heifer won’t even know she has calved

I’ve used Matteo, he’s easy calving, got a small round Angus at 20 months that did pretty good with the AA bonus. Fine for a heifer calving at 24 months so don’t expect a big animal for finishing. My tech couldn’t get straws from him this year. I used Domino and Tower Twomey instead. You have a lot of options with easy calving Saler as well.

since you were using Dovea before, how about lissduff red pepper? I’ve been using him for 3 seasons now and pretty happy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 986 ✭✭✭Sugarbowl

I’ve used Red Pepper before too. Good calves but they came big for me, out of cows rather than heifers. Maybe I fed them too much. Good calves alright.

Ive 2 blue heifers in calf to red pepper for Xmas, ones I'm nervous of.

    Not delighted to hear that..

Era I wouldn’t too much. Just be on the eye out now. They should bring nice calves with the BB. Let us know here how you get on with them. I had a red pepper bull out of a white CH and he came white and I had a black calf out of a black white head for instance so interesting how they come for you. I don’t think they ever came red.
It could just have been a bit of my own fault too. I’m a shade generous with feeding. Trying to watch myself this year not too overdo the head feed. No matter how much you put in front of them they clean it out!!

Is Manclaux that easy @tanko? Is he fairly consistent for you? I have Sligo Valentine straws alright. But never used him yet.

I can’t imagine how a bull could be any easier calved than him, even easier than Knottown Roy who is very easy too. He is consistent, used him a few years ago and have two real nice calves off Manclaux this year, both bulls unfortunately but he brings more shape than Roy, they’d be a bit smaller tho. Calves off both bulls are quiet too. I wouldnt put anything other than a Saler on heifers, great peace of mind at calving time wirh them.

    Don’t know anything about Valentino.

Have a few cows in calf to Glenmore Alex for the spring, will be interesting to see them hopefully.

I’ve had a few Valentino’s and no hassle, easy calved and good growthy cattle . I only have the one heifer off him and she’s actually due next week to Marco I think. I’ve a couple of first timers due in the spring that I put sexed Valentino on . There are loads of negatives talked about saler but I can’t really fault them and the last few years the bulls sold well once they were over 400kg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭limo_100

only used sales ones and all four where easy calved roy calves very happy with them in fairness. I have 2 of the ai'ed now to Rembrandt. do you put sales back on saler heifers or do you go something different? I went lim just to add abit of style there lacking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,217 ✭✭✭tellmeabit

Munster said that salers cow and charlaois bull gives a great mix.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,702 ✭✭✭tanko

I’d still put a Saler on a half Saler heifer, a 3/4 bred Saler is a nice animal especially if you get a heifer and go with a Limousin and maybe a Charolais then.

would they be better breeders overall compared to the 1/2 bred ones?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,702 ✭✭✭tanko

How do you find conception rates to the sexed straws, is there more chance of a repeat using them??

I sell a few 16 month Saler bullocks every year in August or September, they make much the same as Limx bullocks I find. Had a 16 month old Roy bullock of a SimxLim heifer 650kgs make €2800 this year, he grew like a mushroom.

ive seen a few ch x sa up close and they work really well

biggest ch you can use and youll have a cross

not mad about sa though unless you cross them on something extreme

an angus would at least get the bonus at factory time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,702 ✭✭✭tanko

Extreme is great until it’s lying in the calving pen suffering from Rigor mortis. Of course no one put videos of them on Tic Toc or brings them to Carrick on Shannon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,175 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

It's a well proven cross. Neighbour had them here years ago. Very distinctive look. Golden colour with long hair. Very hardy looking cattle. The milk from the saler drives on their growth.

    Valentino heifer on the right.

first calver with saler twin bull calves. They left just shy of 5k at ten months, I was happy enough with it so I didn’t bother chasing an aa Bonus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭limo_100

would you get the same good u grade ends on them that say a limousin cow would breed to a ch?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,293 ✭✭✭Who2

The sexed semen was hit and miss for me. I bought a batch of sexed straws off a lad and not one kept. I had a few smaller than I’d like but took a chance on putting them in calf so I put sexed saler and said if they kept they were kept and if not they were gone and all of those kept. Other than that I wouldn’t have a lot of experience with using sexed straws.

I seen a few on tic Tok young lads half bragging before Carrick well didn't obviously go to plan as the video was taken down after Carrick
