are those dairy angus bulls good enough for beef heifers
From the Munster event last night, will be on their youtube later today...
She recommended checking the no of records and then the difficulty, and note the carcass weight to make your own call then of what u want
Any suggestions for a nice easy calf for heifers, some at 2yrs? Normal heifers, not muscular or big. Mix of AAX, SHX SAX etc. I used to use an old AA straw from Dovea and they don’t have him anymore. I’d rather go with an Angus again and keep the SA or LM for 2nd calving. I have one heifer in calf to Keakil Prime Lad but my first time using so I don’t know know how he turns out but seem to be small calving. I’d rather have a small calf and all come out ok rather than having trouble. Anyone used INTELAGRI MATTEO ET from Munster? Buy my own straws so no issue there.
I agree I thought it was very good also. She had great things to say about omega and Ricky. I would agree with her on that. They have great things to say about octopus the blue bull aswell along with Edison
Only joined near the end but really good from what I got to watch. It was recorded and going to be on Youtube soon.
The advice echoes this thread highly recommending Keltic Rembrandt, Ardlea Rigby and Ardlea Rolex.
I got to ask if myostatin affected milk. If a bull has one Q gene and has two daughters, one with the Q gene and one without, would their milk be different and all evidence says no, It doesn't affect milk. Good to know.

The first cows on the farm were all blues so there's a lot of blue ancestry left with some really dominant NT821 genes the have passed down the line. I spent a lot of time with vet call outs for breeched giant calves, calves that couldn't stand, leg braces for knuckling etc. Great cows but I'm not sure I want to go Blue again. It was nice to have a whole calving season last year without using the jack or even the calving crush. That said a Limousin almost killed me as a teenager and I'm back trying them again.
I've 3 pedigree Aubracs calving to him in April so I'll let you know then.
Rolex has an NT gene so that would be a serious cross to bring size. It's an absolute joke that bulls get deducted a star on terminal because they are harder calving than the breed average. Makes no sense when he's got the stats that show the calf is big for a reason. Recif looks like a great Charolais, a lot of PG bulls don't have milk so he'd make great replacements, especially with the daughter calving diff so low. A lot of the ICBF farm spotlights recommend Moebius this year.
Would you consider using a blue on that type of cow? I find it a great cross especially on the HE cows. And if you get a heifer you end up with a great cow
Calves would be good for height. Not bad for a Lexicon son!
Thanks for that, will probably give him a try, is there good size to his calves??

I have. Very good bull. Easy calved and weight for age. Not as easy calved as Ivor for example, more like EBY, but better quality than both. Also, found his calves to be extremely quiet
What's your stock from shannon stan like
Ruben gd looks a goods a good bull also really like the look of him. Have a really nice heifer of Rutland ruben but again like all his tomschoice comrades size is an issue. But great length and depth.
From PG, I've used;
Ardlea Rigby - great to add size and length, while not hard calving. If he turns out to have milk, then should be a great bull.
Keltic Rembrandt - lovely quiet cattle with a bit of depth to them. Not overly long.
Shannon Samurai - easy calving, great legs, feet, movement. I've a feeling they'll stay small and aren't exactly the quietest.
Nebbiolo - not used, but like what I've seen. Recommended to me by Munster sales manager. Should make good cows.
Hector GD - not used, but thick muscley type. Seen good PB bulls by him. He has good milk figures so far.
Have you used Drumline S??
you should add Rolex to the list top class calves I must say I'm going to use him a lot going forward. Have a nice recif heifer from the spring also she has an nt gene from the cow I might keep her she be top class to breed to blue bulls. Also have used omega a lot over the years he is top class and easy calved. I have put 6 heifers in calf to Nebbiolo and moebius actually they have all gone past 3weeks with no repeats anyone ever seen they before? hopefully they all held.
I have a Lisna somebull calf also from a heifer nice calf consider him but he needs size.
I’m not sure how I missed Ardlea Rigby. On paper he brings a lot of weight. I’ll add him to the list. Rembrandt looks like the ideal cross for my cows.
My plainer cows really benefit from an NT821 gene so I’m going to use CH8571 Recif and CH6493 Omega to hopefully get some Q gene heifers.
Id have only a few AAx (from Dairy) left but bulls that have worked well for me Lisna Sir (8mth old bull to 480kg! this year), Knell (added length and height to the Angus) and Queenhead Altea (on heifers).
Any Tomschoice bull I have used on the AAx came very small but stayed small so i avoid any of them now. Same with Powerful Proper, they fell out of the cows but never amounted to anything and sold worst for me.
I plan on getting more Rigby straws for 2 of my bigger AAx cows. Ive 2 beautiful PD weanlings this year miles ahead of everything so well impressed with him.
On the horns, i have the same issue with AA/LMx, the odd small butty horns that dont appear till their weaned. Its a pain but they never point so never much of an issue
Rembrandt is the only bull worth using there in my opinion. He’s breeding very well, and his straws have been exported to France, which is a great sign. Rigby and Rolex are 2 good bulls as well. Grenache and Shannon Stan for heifers, you’ll need height on the female side for Grenache.
If it’s polled you want, Progressive have a new bull Pilote Ben PP (S4694), not sure how much his straws are, but he looks to be very promising.
+1 Got a sweet pedigree bull from him this year. Great muscle although he's not overly long. Calved on her own.
Looking at your list there reminded me that Munster have Greensons Testament as SCEP eligible. Not sure how they work that out.
ardlea rigby is worth a look
A lot of lads here are very experienced with Limousin. My tech is with progressive genetics and these are the LM bulls I'm thinking of using this season. I made a chart to compare them all. I've calves from Shannon Stan, Powerfull Proper and Grenache coming next year so I'll have a better idea in the Spring whether to use them again. The amount of bulls with Eravelle or Edakkya in their breeding. Tomschoice Oriflamme stats seem over exaggerated, Powerful Proper had similar high stats that have gone way down every evaluation so I'll watch him over the next few months. Keltic Rembrandt seems a really good bull. I've some 90% Angus cows and their calves throw up scurs/snail horns which is why I'm looking at fully polled bulls for them. Any suggestions on other bulls? Mostly looking at breeding replacements from Angus/Hereford cross cows who need more muscle. I can order anything Progressive genetics have and my tech has a lot of straws from older bulls swell .
they said the same about CF-52 when he was alive. Those same breeders mad a fortune from his offspring
Cows show:
Myostatin F94L Meat 1 copy
I have fiston heifers off them that show:
Myostatin F94LMeat1 copy
And
Myostatin Q204X Meat 1 copy
These heifers have calved lm2014 so far.
I used GPD only once, got a fantastic CH heifer out of a LMX cow. Was easy calved and bred well too. The heifer bred well, didn’t look to have massive milk but every calf stole off her and her calves weighed and sold well. He’s bred by TXG, so will have muscle and style
What Myostatin do you think?
he was a great bull. Have two cows off him here. Although one proved not in calf last week and wil be culled in the spring. But the other one is a muscle machine and both have lots of milk. I see ice cream is 150 a straw
I see Castleview Gringo (GWO) is available now too. I wonder where all these old straws came from. Was there a "Special Pot" somewhere, where only certain people has access to?
CASTLEVIEW GRINGO ET - Progressive Genetics
I didn’t remember that about Devon was he known to produce consistent cattle? I can’t really remember. I assume something like 52 them low type muscley cattle. Your right about fsz I know someone that breeds great weanlings and he used to say he would never use fsz he wasn’t a proper ch bull. Now he’s gone he has bought a lot of cows and a lot are fsz cows says there the best in the herd. I liked fsz they wherent overly big but great thickness and muscling. I sold a fsz cow last year she was and e grade when I brought her to the mart.
