Agree, probably 100kW charging vs 350kW isn't great. More expensive as well if I recall?

At least Waterford has more options for charging

Ionity seem to have given up on a few sites after getting planning permission, I wonder are they getting the boot from the land owner or they decided to focus elsewhere

I think some of the newer Applegreen chargers are 180kW shared by yes more expensive 75c if you tap a credit card and 69c if you use the app. To be fair the AG app is quite user friendly but there's no subscription available so you're stuck with the higher prices

Even electroverse app at ionity is 66c without any subscription

I've been using plug and charge on my ID.4 for a while now at Ionity Athlone and it's always worked without problems. I had to reactivate plug and charge after the recent update, so anyone who has had the update should check it.

How do you get that to work. I didn't see an option when charging my model 3 the other day. I was using electroverse so presume I should have used the ionity app is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,567 ✭✭✭cannco253

It's a feature built into the VW app so not sure how it works outside of that.

My guess plug and charge will only work with BMW, Ford, Hyundai/Kia, Mercedes & VW group cars as these were the original JV partners in Ionity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 217 ✭✭dsandson

I hear that VW group cars do it properly, so the cars can accept a third party certificate from the likes of Electroverse. Renault, Kia and Hyundai all require the use of their own charging app only.

To my knowledge Tesla do use the full Plug and Charge protocols for their own Supercharger network, but they haven't been certified for third parties. So they can't use plug and charge on Ionity etc

Received Ionity charge card in post during week. Tried to use it today by tapping it on the screen but no joy. Used the app then with no issue. Am I doing something wrong ?

    Thanks

Did you go through the poxy card activation process?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 217 ✭✭dsandson

You need to register it in the app. The letter it came on should have said that but it's easy to just chuck it in the car.

I received mine last week, registered and its been running fine. Have used it multiple times at Athlone, Charlestown, City North & Kill South. Besides Tesla, which I can plug & charge, it was the only service I didnt have an RFID card for - glad I do know as they just work as opposed to apps which can be hit and miss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭Bannerman1969

Yeah. Did register it. So it should work it I tap it off the screen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,564 ✭✭✭JohnC.

Tap it on the card reader with the NFC logo on it. I don't know which charger you were using, but it's probably somewhere near the screen, but not the actual screen itself.

Electroverse currently have a subscription for €11.99 that allows you to charge at Ionity for €0.42/kWh which is 2 cent cheaper than Ionity's own subscription.

Cant seem to access details of the Electroverse sub without signing up for an account - unless you have a link?

Is it a 12 month contract or rolling monthly contract? If its a rolling sub then good value for occasional use like a trip to EU or you dont want a year long sub.

Can it be used with other providers and what are the rates like?

Realistically no saving over 12 months though just on Ionity alone.

Ionity Power 365 annual sub is €119.99

    Electroverse 12 months sub = €143.88

Difference = €23.89 /2ckWh meaning you would need to charge 1194kWh to break even.

    €11.99 x 12 months = €143.88 per annum with Electroverse

Ionity was €99.99 per annum @ .44cent up to last week and now is €119.99 per annum.

It was a launch special price (which I signed up to). But no point quoting that as its no longer available.

To be fair you need to be doing a decent amount of charging to get the savings. If you do most of your charging at home then its pointless.

So it's a monthly sub that you can cancel anytime.

I've had a few longer runs in the last 6 weeks and decided to try out the Ionity RFID card along with the €11.99 subscription. I ended up using Kill North, Dungannon and Dublin North, typically from 20% to 80%. Always had 220kW + to start with (pre-heated the battery) and was on the road again in less than 20mins. Normally less than 30 secs to get charging. Ionity offer a very predictable and reliable service to be fair.

The next month will be a lot quieter, so I'll cancel the monthly subscription, but if coverage was greater in the West / South I'd be tempted to pay the annual sub.

I've seen one very recent planning application from Ionity in GB for these Alpitronic units, to be labelled as 600kW. I guess it'll depend on how ambitious they are in finding new sites. Theres not currently any 'coming soon' pins on their network map for Ireland, north or south, so we'll be waiting a while.

I saw they also lost their appeal to the Commission for their proposed site at Fermoy late last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,031 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I would imagine that BYD will be the first to bring them here, along with the first car capable of charging at that speed. Probably utilising their 14 showrooms and resulting in a more substantial network than Ionity or Tesla

Interestingly regarding the Fermoy site the commission board rejected the inspectors findings and found that actually 24 EV chargers aren't part of the Climate Action Plan

Worth saying that it isn't 1MW into the car, the cabinet can output 1MW split across up to 12 charging points

Its kind of like Kempower chargers in that respect

An individual plug can output 600kW, which is still bonkers amount of power

It’s a moot point; Circle K secured planning permission for a 10-stall charging hub on the adjacent site last year. Construction hasn't begun yet, however—likely because there isn't enough power available in town to support it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,031 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Generally speaking the board of ACP go with their inspectors findings. It's highly unusual for them to send somebody in to do the leg work on the ground and then disagree with their findings

Just got notified by Electroverse that their Ionity subscription discount is increasing from 37% to 40% in April, the subscription is €11.99/ month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,236 ✭✭✭wassie

Ionity at Athlone has been an absolute sh!tshow this week.

The new chargers 5 & 6 have been completely inoperable at times, whilst the others have been hit and miss with slower charging speeds and issues with RFID cards.

What ever people think of Tesla, their supercharger network is by far the most reliable.

I see Ionity have put their rates up from 0.69c/kwh to 77c/kwh 🤬🤬🤬

Still showing as 66c with electroverse. Although I assume that will change soon enough

Nothing like a good old fashioned war to boost profits is there?
