But in this case, isnt that beneficial ? If they dont update they cant be blocked at a later stage ? I presently have 4 of them including the new projector, 5 if you consider android phone casting.

Possibly. I have 2 older boxes (android 9) that are not receiving any more updates hooked up to projectors. We haven't seen the exact details for app blocking an android yet. For my main IPTV box on my TV I think I'll take my chances with a box that gets firmware updates until we hear more.

If they don't update you're also open to security issues though? And other, legal, apps might stop being supported if you wanted to use them too?

    Very good piece that.

Interesting that the US guy said that it's anything between $60 and $90 a month if you want to get every EPL game in the US.

I know every game is available, but that's not cheap.

They also talk a lot of sense when discussing the idea of the EPL taking it "in house", it won't be cheap for the consumer, would probably involve some sort of dynamic pricing and it's unlikely to happen anyway as the EPL with the current model prefer to get their money in bulk and let someone else worry about the delivery of the product.

Also interesting about the Amazon Prime package a few years ago.

Amazon were never interested in getting into sports media in the UK, all they wanted to do was use a few cheap EPL packages to sell more stuff during the post Christmas sales.

Now that that cheap package was no longer available they were gone.

Until they can control piracy themselves, the EPL would be mad to take TV coverage in house. They would just be the ones taking a massive financial hit from the crime gangs.

The podcast discussed this was unlikely as there is too much risk to the EPL & Club Owners associated with the subscriber model. By selling media rights, they effectively outsource this risk by receiving payment upfront. Also means they dont need to manage & fund productions costs - leave that to the experts.

Absolutely and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new one if it comes out.

For a good few years it was my Plex server too, but there were some bugs which caused me to abandon plex server on the Shield, perhaps they were fixed I'm not sure but these I believe were Plex related nothing to do with the Shield. I might set it up again and see what happens.

What I also like about the shield tv also is the Parental controls. When I'm finished with it I turn on the Restricted profile which allows the Boys to access apps I select only.

It's cool that the Shield can access Steam, Xbox etc. The Boys don't have access to it because they'd be on it day and night , and would be knocking the **** out of eachother fighting over it but one has playstation and the other Lad has XBOX with restrictions and time limits, sometimes I use the XBOX subsctiption on the Shield but I don't really play computer games much.

I really love the Shield, it's definitely the most amazing and reliable streaming device I've had over the last almost 10 years, the only streaming device really, who'd need anything else ?

What's mad about it as a device is not even that it's had so many updates and such a long life - it's still a snappy device. I've used chromecast with google tvs in other peoples houses and they were great when initially launched but are now slow as molasses. But the shield keeps plugging away.

I got a Shield a few months ago and I'm very very happy with it

The response from it compared to the Chinese boxes I was using previously - in fact there's no comparison.

I've only cleared the cache on Tivimate once and that was just out of habit.

RTE player quite snappy on it too, again no comparison to working the same app on the TV

Is there any reason to make any changes yet for people using a ready-made sub app on a firestick?

Or are we in wait and see how this plays out territory?
