The EULA you agreed too, gives them the lawful authority.

Tivimate was rejected from the amazon app store, so they already have a dim view of it.

Ugoos X4Q PRO. An upgraded version of my TOX3 box from Ugoos with nearly identical firmware. Ugoos have some of the best firmware features Ive seen an android box. Review:

    Pros v cons screenshot:

    Full specs:

If my TOX3 died Id buy X4Q PRO in the morning. So customizable and a great IPTV box in my opinion.

Found this podcast from The Athletic about illegal streaming.

The first part of it is fairly meh, nothing groundbreaking in it.

But from about 45 minutes on they actually talk about the possibility of EPL taking on the rights themselves, what it might cost, how it might evolve etc

They also talked about the new Firestick changes, VPNs

As mainstream media pieces on illegal streaming goes it's not bad.

That was an interesting listen - thanks.

I dont do illegal streaming myself simply for the reasons they discussed - i.e security risks on my home network and privacy - I dont want my IP address associated with illegal activity that may be investigated.

But for peeps that do use illegal streams, I have no issue with that whatsoever as I sympathise because the current legal streaming options are an unaffordable basket case.

Afterall, I would engage in 'geo-piracy' extensively on all my streaming services (with the exception of Now TV) to access cheaper content from legit sources through cheaper regional pricing with a paid VPN. But it does take effort and maintenance, and has been getting harder in the last couple of years. The benefit is that the whole family can access services across all the devices in the house simultaneously using legit apps.

I did like the view point that what is driving demand for illegal streaming is that consumers simply want easy access to all games at a reasonable price and that this actually could help drive innovation to develop a solution in response, as we saw in the music world. Who ever sorts this will win.

I just hope its not the Saudi's. But I think I will be wrong.

    Yes @wassie exactly.

I made the point before that force updating OS's, etc is whack-a-mole. Just moving people onto unsecured boxes, etc.

The winner will be the techie solution where they can encode the signal and decode at the end user somehow without the pirates cracking it. Not sure how but somebody will manage this and make an absolute fortune out of it.

I bet its extremely complex though and as usual, the underground world has no problem keeping up on their side!

I suppose it can be done as in the case with NDS Videoguard, when NDS/sky changed the encryption, card sharing died.

The problem is implementing this tech in the tv networks and having some capable hardware on the user end, software be easy crack. I don't know if it's even possible.

One problem with piracy is rising costs for the consumer and if they had complete control over piracy then prices will rise to the point people will not want to pay anyway. The other problem is too many streaming services costing too much.

Torrents are another still very popular and rising again alternative, as long as content exists on Disks, streamed as it is now it will be pirated.

We could see the day we only have access to an Intranet like in North Korea, they have no access to the global internet. There content can be strictly controlled. Wo knows ? maybe then everyone will go back to being more sociable people and go around to people's houses playing music and singing songs lol. Might not be a bad thing.

It's all about the price and secondly ease of access. You could argue and a few here have, that nowTV offering is good value. I used it for a while but then it became a pain in the hoop negotiating with them to keep a low price and then finding codes every so often. It takes management. There are far too many streaming services for entertainment content. Even in football, it's a different package for some games and CL games. Make it complex and people will always opt for simplicity. I'll stick to my Shield with a VPN to access until something else comes along.

a north korea approach will never occur, the internets is safe, plough on with your iptv, tis all good

The Shield is a great device, especially considering it's n the go almost 10 years. There'd be no way I'd have another Android box while it's still working as good as it is and still fully supported.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,898 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

I installed Bluestacks android emulator on my laptop and it works great, give it a go.

It's using about 2.2 Gb ram, I have 40 GB total in use is around 20 Gb because I have some Chrome tabs open and some other bits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,856 ✭✭✭wassie

I have always liked the Shield as it is a great device, but it is aging when it comes to highest quality 4K HDR streaming as it is doesnt support the following formats:

    • HDR10+ support (which affects mainly Samsung TVs)
    • Shield models before 2019 dont supprt Dolby Vision
    • HLG support (eg live sports broadcasts like Sky/Now & BBC iPlayer)
    • VP9 Profile 2 codec for Youtube 4K HDR (but deos 4K SDR).

Again, this wont be a problem if you don't have a high end TV that cant support 4K/UHD HDR. But if you have any kind of decent OLED, then you will be limiting the best quality picture from many streams, regardless of source.

Interesting development being reported by Android Authority

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,898 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

I'm not even sure if my LG 4K tv supports HDR….. lol so yeah, not going to bother me.

I have BBC Iplayer working on it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,856 ✭✭✭wassie

Yep - BBC iPlayer works but its their live UHD content will only show in SDR (if at all) eg live streams such as concerts or sports events.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,898 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

Ah ok, yeah it works and looks pretty good but the TV probably does a good job at upscaling.

Definitely hit a nerve there, you work in the industry somehow or another ? why would you care ? If Sky went tits up tomorrow I couldn't care less, or the entire movie industry collapse I couldn't care less. I do hoever spend a lot more time these days watching youtube, there can be much more interesting content from priviate individuals than entire movie industry, a lot of crap too but youtube is one place I can always rely on to find some interesting content, I don't watch as many movies or TV shows as I did because a lot of them are crap these days, I hardly use IPTV streaming either despite how easy it is to access the content just isn't there, if I had to depend on SKY to entertain me I would go mad so if they went bust tomorrow I couldn't care less, I'm sick of looking at so much CGI content anyway. Next all we'll be looking at is robots…….

The real issue is content, when it was mostly Netflix you could find someting to watch fairly easy but now that there are so many it's hard to find good content on every streaming services, Hollywood aren't doing so good because of all the failed movies etc, people aren't interested in a lot of the crap they're making these days.

You're right about Mp4 , if it's on Bluray it can be ripped and compressed and voila, mp4 in X265 glorius compression, more quality same bandwidth, I love it. Torrents are getting more popular again.

I can't see how they will ever stop piracy, they tried to take down the torrent sites, they can't another will just pop up, they tried to shut down pirate bay, didn't work, who needs IPTV streams when you can get so much on torrent ? There is a benefit to play instantly of course but still, torrents are a viable alternative espcailly when you want to download a series for the plane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,898 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

I think one major issue is that you have to subscribe to many different providers or you're left with one that has a lot of crap you can't watch like Netflix or you could be in the middle of a series and it was taken down because of time limits or contract agreements etc. Netflix really has a serious about of utter crap.

Amazon's relatively new trick is to give you a certain amout of a TV series and pay for the rest which I have no doubt is down to the content owners too, this is the same on the likes of ITVX, Channel 4 etc, they could just have 6 of 8 series of something and people might not even be aware there are 3 more seasons.

It's all a big mess and a combination of both poor quality content to having so many streaming services and not necissiarly the cost of one but the cost of all added up together.

Imagine all the data centre power wasted on streaming ?

Whats stopping you from buying a cheap and cheerful box from China? My latest movie projector has one built in so it plays directly and will connect to hotel WiFi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,583 ✭✭✭SteM

The cheap China boxes hardly ever get upgrades though. Would prefer to buy a Google Streamer for €89 and have it last for a few years tbh.

Depends. The cheapest of cheap yes you get what you pay for. TrustOnX have updated TOX3 box firmware 4 times.

I wouldn't define the tox3 as a 'cheap and chearful' box though. Look on AliExpress, there are plenty of boxes for between €20 and €30 that will never get an android update or security patches.

Agreed. My point was a cheapo box wouldnt provide regular substantial firmware updates like TrustOnX have for TOX3. I shouldve been clearer on that.
