I suppose he done his time. I was shocked to hear him do mc on the night of the home coming after the club all ireland. A nice fella tho who made a mistake and took his punishment. Darren gleeson done something similar and wasnt long finding work. Not defending them but people make mistakes. Life goes on…

It was but I wouldn't be into doing something similar as payback. That's not the way ballyhale do things.

Not sure what purpose that would serve?!

Ripped off a good friend of his and then tried to blame it all on the wife.

He's an out an out prick and showed no remorse or effort to pay anything back.

Ye, I have to agree. While we all make mistakes how quickly he got back into normal life and a job with Ballyhale and now multiple county teams disappointed me. You'd have thought he'd have had to do a few years of waiting before clubs and county teams would take him back.....considering he never paid the individual back

He surely paid back his victim, neighbour and friend by now?

After all the hand wringing and 'shame on him' is finished....

If you have a neck , and just brave it out , you can carry on regardless.....

Ripping off ordinary people is not too bad it seems.....

    Largely agree with your assessment.

What I worry about with Darragh Corcoran at centre back though is the two teams that made the AI final played with roadrunners at centre forward, Andrew Ormond and Shane Barrett. Invariably teams copy the most successful teams (probably see Eoin Cody do likewise for KK or Adam English for Limerick). So more likely than not, Darragh won’t be suited to marking those type of players.

For my money, Mikey Carey is the best choice there given his recovery pace, physicality and aerial ability. Probably needs to temper his attacking instincts though. But at least you know that teams won’t be able to make runs down the middle too easily.

It’s a pity that Adrian Mullen is so injury prone as I think he’s ideal for centre back if he had a run at it (remember that John Conlan rarely ever played there for his club before becoming Clare’s centre back and his first competitive game there, they lost to Antrim).

In terms of the other positions, if Huw is gone, Darragh Corcoran or Padraic Moylan look the best candidates to take his place. Both have the physical presence for the position and are very steady on the ball. Moylan probably has a bit more skill but Darragh is probably more ruthless.

For cornerbacks, Ivan Bolger kept Darragh McCarthy fairly quiet in the AI u20 final when the match went very much against us. I think he’s an ideal IC cornerback in that he’s fast, strong and rarely makes a mistake on the ball. Peter Connellan, Killian Corcoran and Timmy Kelly should also be looked at during the league. I think with cornerback you can start lads earlier than any other position at IC level as you need pace and the less scar tissue you have the better. But it does have a shorter shelf life as you don’t tend to see to many lads get to 30 before they’re dropped or moved on from. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Sean Finn, Paul Murphy, etc were outstanding cornerbacks early on but found it tougher as the years went by.

For the wing back spots, David Blanchfield will hopefully come back to form and make the right wing back spot his own. If not, Gearoid Dunne should be looked at. Shane Murphy should get a run at left wing back. If it doesn’t work out with him, I’d like to see Cathal Beirne given a run there as it could be a good option if teams drop their half forward line deep and we have to go short on the puckout and run out from deep. He has the pace to take on lads and it might actually open up space on the other side if teams have to gameplan for it.

If the individual hasn't been paid back I can't see how the county board could ratify the appointment. You surely couldn't have someone no matter how good a coach being the face of kilkenny camogie if the money hasn't been returned.

To be fair my knowledge of the aftermath of the case is not definite. Maybe there has been a payback but I haven't heard that to be the case.

As mentioned, we all make mistakes in life and shouldn't define anyone for the rest of their life if they are genuinely remorseful. Just surprised how quick it was all put behind by clubs and county teams in Kilkenny

It's the Camogie county boards decision, not the GAA county board. I would agree it's a strange one. From my reading of the case at the time, out of the 49k he swindled out of his friend he had managed to get 41k for the court date as a form of restitution.

From talking to a local Garda at the time they said that he was probably going to get a year suspended sentence and that would have been that. On the morning of the sentencing he withdrew his letter apologising and by all accounts showed no remorse at all and displayed a lot of arrogance. Apparently this irked the judge no end, so he ended up getting and 18 month sentence with only 12 months suspended.

Maybe he has redeemed himself since but his behaviour at the trial showed no remorse or sympathy towards his victim.

Usually this time of the year you would hear of players being dropped and retiring. I know niall rowe isnt playing soccer with newpark it is because he is in with kk but zach is playing with fort rangers so does that mean he isnt going in with kk? Hurling wasnt great but that could be improved. A great athlete who might of done a stopping job on a corner foward. Owen wall isnt going back in as far as i know. As others have said from midfield up kk arent too bad but its 1-7 that needed surgery. Huge difference between club and county as we know but corcoran has being the best 6 at club level this year and deserves a go. Game has changed but you would hope with eddie and niall structurally might be better set up. Dissapointingly wall and doherty left after one year and didnt have the same influence they hoped to get. Dereks hand is forced with huw going soon. Tommy and harry both doing well with their recovery and all going well should see gametime in a kk jersey. Few fowards like ian byrne, liam moore, and one of the most promising underage fowards in the county patrick lacey could put pressure on the fowards. Hopefully oisin knox is helped with his recovery in kk because he has had some good years with vegas.kk spent years trying to find a midfield pairing so i definitely wouldn't be changing that. I think most will agree from 1-7 changes need to happen. Ttown last year and shamrocks this year really went after deegan and identified him as a weak leak. A versatile whole hearted player but imo kk cant have him and richie on the same line.derek has being very loyal to codys team and has to put his stamp on this team heading into his 4th year. He has big calls to make starting with goalkeeper. Puckouts have being atrocious but scruff admitted himself he let balls past him he usually wouldn't. His confidence probably affected by the poor puckouts. Tallis needs to be given plenty of league time. Geroid dunne definitely could get a run in the backs and conor macmahon has a bit if cutting in him. Paddy langton probably lacks a bit of pace but is also in there. Derek will have to do something he hasnt done in 3 years and thats drop established players and let young lads make mistakes.moylan is the obvious candidate for 3 but teams have often tried covert wing backs and they might prefer to try mikey at 3. Bolger neary and killian corcoran will all hopefully get a run. Dunne, mcmahon, david barcoe, daragh corcoran, mackinassey, eoghan lyng, langton, padraig Dempsey might all get a look in this line.pity about daire o neill. Anthony ireland has had a great year and joe healy could be a longer term project although number 6 for paulstown was also very good

No one mentioned the hurling county board?

Its obviously the Camogie co boards choice to ratify Meagher and his team.

Just on the above - and no comment on the individuals involved - but what is it with womens sport that women themselves dont get involved in the coaching, (or mens sport). An all male team coaching Kilkenny camogie.

I know with my own kids - in all the years I was coaching a boys team, I never once came across a woman coaching one of the other teams. And with my daughters teams - I would say its at least 80% men coaching in hurling and football.

The narrative is all about how its not a level playing field. No man is going to step in front of that missile and argue against it.

But it completely masks the very big issue that women do not promote or support womens sport.

Its not like camogie is a new thing Kilkenny that has taken off in recent years. There are thousands of ex players in the county

There needs to be a serious and honest debate about why women dont support womens sport. Why arent they becoming coaches? Why are there hardly any female refs? Why dont they attend matches? County camogie team playing in front of a few hundred for any league game. It cant always be down to, oh there are so many barriers - surely at some point its, well cause we dont want to put in the effort. Needs to be an honest debate about this.

    Ive been involved for years...

very very hard to get girls/woman interested in getting involved.

Although to be fair the Kk u23 vamogie team had 2 women over them this year....

But again its like the Skort/Shorts debacle where every woman in the country were outraged that men were 'telling woman what to wear' , but the same people would never, ever ever give up a minute of their own time to help promote , or administrate or coach a girls/womans sport ...

The reason or answer - i have no idea....

Eh… maybe its because they are at work, at home minding the children or making their partners lunches and dinners when they are out coaching. Its not that easy for women to get into coaching with males dominating it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,012 ✭✭✭Tombo2001

Or maybe, in the real world, both partners are working and both partners are rearing kids and both partners are cooking meals in the evening and both partners are doing drop offs in the morning…because thats most of the people I know

You go down to an underage training session. How often do you see parents on the sideline chatting, who could get involved but dont. Or they use it as time to bring the dog for a walk, when they could be helping out.

You might say, will thats their prerogtive. But if the actual coaches took that approach, then there would be no underage training at all. And to go back to the original point - most people who volunteer their time for underage gaa coaching are men, and that applies to both girls and boys teams.

The phrase 'male dominated' implies that women are being excluded. But girls teams are crying out for women to get involved, and its not happening. It would be far, far better to have girls coached by women.

Equally, the county or club camogies teams would love better attendances. Women could attend the games, but they dont.

My point to you is that women could get involved. Instead we hear reasons why they dont. But when does it stop being a valid reason, and start being an excuse.

Your first point in b-s ...

Men dont do any of those 'jobs' ???

Its very easy to get involved in coaching , the next time your club asks if anyone would like to get involved with their kids team , they do.... and then you take it from there....

But no , its easier to say 'no way, i havent time ... '.... and leave someone else (usually a man!) do it....

    That is the way.

    Only women can change that....

They need to stand up and be counted in a physical tangible sense , instead of fighting for the shorts on bookface ...

Yeah, the whole 'male dominated' narrative - could just as easily be framed as 'men doing all the heavy lifting'. Which would be closer to the truth in my view.

From what I can see - there is not one senior intercounty camogie team being managed by a woman.

A lot of the players mentioned will be fine in the winter ground during the league and also during the Leinster league/chamo due to poorer opposition etc. The acid test is Croke Park in the middle of the summer, this is where the same lads like Deegan and Richie Reid are continuously exposed, any weakness will be found out in Croke Park in the knock out stages. Every year the same lads are found out in the knock stages but seem to redeem themselves in the league when Kilkenny are usually ahead of opposition and field stronger teams and the slower ground suits, then bang same thing happens in Croke Park in the summer. This is going on 6/7 years now

Its easy to get involved in coaching - from the point of view that coaching is not complex for the most part. Anyone can add value….and can do so from day 1. Anyone who is saying 'I wouldnt know how', is just wrong and possibly disingenuous. Its not complex.

The difficult part is giving up the time. And so for coaches - for me, it means not having other hobbies, not being able to play golf at the weekend or walk the dog. It doesnt mean that I leave the kids unfed.

    True.

Ann Downey coached Kilkenny senior a few years back.

Then was with Ballyragget, over SETU carlow camogie now , and Mt lein Rangers...

Seems to be the only woman coaching at that level?

    Edit - quote didnt work ..... 🤷‍♂️

Not 1 ex player on the proposed incoming management team for camogie and job wasn't advertised to see ic anyone might have been interested. Also I think women outnumbered men on the camogie board .certainly chair and secretary are women
