I don't think they advertised as Circle K chargers, although on their website they're quick to claim all Ionity and Ecars sites as part of Circle K charging networks

I'm certainly hoping it's an Ionity site, as you say it'll be an awful waste to see 6 spaces and a single 180kW CCS charger installed

As I say, probably straw clutching to an extent but you never know. The fact that they specified Ionity in their planning application might give a glimmer of hope

I used one of the Alpitronic units in France today at Dreux

Not much to say, plugged in and started from the app, whole experience was seamless as it should be. Car ramped up to 109kW pretty quickly which was good enough for 25% SoC

Biggest issue is that the hub in Dreux is basically in the middle of nowhere behind some car dealerships. There's a McDonald's and other fast food places about a 10 mins walk away but otherwise nothing

However we were back on the road after less than 10 mins so not much of an issue

I see Ionity have brought out their own charge card, might be useful for people driving to the continent where poor mobile signal might be a problem.

Well I'm adding it to my collection anyway!

They have also added annual subscriptions with an introductury offer of €59.99 for the cheapest "Ionity motion" and €119.99 for the Ionity Power".

One thing worth noting about the annual plan, the rate is guarunteed for the year

So as well as a saving on the subscription you could save on charging if rates go up

What are the current rates with the €59.99 plan ?

yes, its been available for the last month or so. I have one and it works well. No going through all the steps on their app, just plug in and tap the card and the charge starts.

Its also free if you've subscribed to one of their plans.

As much as I dislike charging cards, I dislike apps even more

I'd definitely get one if I'm signing up for the paid plans, could use the subscription for a month if you're on holiday and then you have the card forever

Doing a bit of quick math on the monthly versus annual subscription, the monthly Ionity Power pays for itself after 48kWh per month and the annual option pays for itself after 34kWh average per month (at the discounted €100 annual sub)

This is versus the basic rate if 69c/kWh

If you're someone doing even a bit of Ionity charging regularly then the annual plan looks like a good deal. Having the rate locked in for the year is a nice bonus too

I would have thought its just a link to the app so to speak, so its the same authorisation process. However my bank app doesn't notify me of pre-auths so I'm not sure

Travel a fair bit for work and typically would use Tesla and ESB networks. Signed up to the Power 365 yearly plan there for €99 a couple of days ago.

Consumed 58kW over last couple of days on Ionity which saved me €14.50 off the GO plan (PAYG). At this rate I should have recouped the €99 fee in 3 months, then will have a 44c rate for the remaining 9 months.

Can confirm that the €40 pre-auth was taken at point of charge, but all charging payment transactions were completed on the same day on my credit card so there are no outstanding holds.

Workmanship looks good. However I assume they're not getting Zevi funding as those steel kerbs are quite stark! Also wouldn't want to prang my alloys on them

No contractors on site to enquire whether Ionity or Applegreen chargers are to be installed.

The layout doesnt have the look of an Ionity install to me. Looks much more like a typical Applegreen charger base with the 4 metal posts and the charger in the middle

Used the electroverse card yesterday at Kill South, battery was on 8% when I pulled in. 42.85kWh delivered in 24 minutes at a cost of €28.49. Probably the cheapest and fastest charge (without a subscription) on the M7 but reversing into those spaces was a bit awkward

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,525 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Granted it’s cheaper than Ionity pay as you go but is the rate per kWh pretty much the same as eCars ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,859 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Yes it is actually, it's the exact same price as the high powered ecars since their latest price increase, 3c cheaper than Applegreen and Circle K Branded chargers and a whooping 9c cheaper than the maxol recharge ones

Ionity have been installing dual plug units recently, think they might be Alpitronic chargers. I used them in France, they're pretty good

However, I don't see the distinctive white power units anywhere. Also that transformer box in the background looks like the ones Applegreen tend to use

So, quite likely to be an AG site in the end, which means they probably won't install all the chargers straight away 😬

I would hope that as there were chargers there before, (and therefore the HV feed should be there already), it shouldn't be too long before we see these operational.

That was only a single 50kW unit, I believe they can often use the existing grid connection

For 6 HPCs you'd be looking at 1MW minimum, definitely going to need an upgrade

Unless indeed it is Applegreen and they do a butchered Castlebellingham/Lusk style job to it, then the 50kW connection would be plenty

Ref. Waterford City and County Council Planning Application 2360156—Holycross (Applegreen) Service Station, Waterford, X91VEH7.

Relevant quote from achitects’ letter to the planners dated 19 October 2023:

The proposed installation is for a Public EV charging hub. The proposed electric vehicle
chargers proposed are designated as ultra rapid commercial grade chargers which require
significantly more power than a standard EV charger.
By way of context, a standard domestic unit is typically rated at 7KW. Most of the larger single
EV units in supermarket car parks are typically rated at 50 - 100KW and are designated as
‘rapid’ chargers. Ultra rapid chargers are in the range of 175 KW to 350 KW and are usually
found at service stations and dedicated commercial charging hubs. For this scheme we are
providing 6 No. 350 KW ultra rapid chargers.
Due to the power capacity required to service this load we exceed the capacity of a standard
ESBN substation and therefore require a supply which is metered at high voltage (i.e. 20KV).
This requires a triple room substation dictated by the ESB and as indicated in our submission.

See also architects' drawing [9713.06] of proposed electricity substation:

Thats ESB's standard design for substation. Nothing architectural about those concrete boxes.

Charging units are currently being installed. Does this get us closer to a definitive answer?

Yeah pretty sure those aren't Ionity chargers

The dual plug Ionity chargers are Alpitronic chargers like at the site below

    https://chargemap.com/fr-fr/ionity-dreux-16-rue-elie-tilleul-zi-nord.html

These look quite a bit different, unless there's a new model or they got a new vendor

That certainly clears it up, Applegreen have already installed these chargers elsewhere in Ireland. Letterkenny is one. Ionity haven't used these before, and they aren't amongst the new chargers they're trialling. Definitely Applegreen Electric.

These are X-Charge C6 chargers. Can be configured for up to 200kW power.

That's sad to see and really makes the Ionity subscription less valuable, 8 Ionity stations in the entire country and mainly focused in the east really doesn't make it worthwhile

On a slightly different note I did eventually get plug and charge working for my iD3 on the Ionity chargers. Several resets of the infotainment later it eventually installed the certificate or whatever it needs.

Very convenient for oh who always seems to have issues with charging and no €40 pre authorisation.

Will be handy whenever the other operators bring in too. Mandatory on new chargers from 2027 apparently. I see it on Applegreen chargers but doesn't appear to work yet.
