Darragh has shown up well at centre back for the Shamrocks, in particular marking John Donnelly and on Sunday. But club and county are two different ball games. The last time he was in with the county and hurled, he was sometimes outfielded for more ball than he should given his size. Even on Sunday towards the end of the match, Jordan Molloy caught a ball behind him.

Given Darragh is so-so in the air, I’ve often wondered whether he would be better in midfield and be that physical presence we are looking for since he’s great to carry ball, take a score and crash into rucks. Blanchfield, Carey and Molloy as a half back line with Cian Kenny and Darragh Corcoran might be a better balance to the team.

This could be all for naught as I don’t think Lyng took too kindly to being questioned by Darragh for dropping him after the Carlow match in 2024.

Ref wasn't great yesterday and overall it was a depressing spectacle. The two goalies, Two Reids and Joey apart not much to get excited about. Mind you Jordan Molloy was best outfield for O'Loughlins. He was written off by at least one poster here after last years final so I wouldn't be getting carried away writing players off or anointing them as starters on the county team after a below standard county senior championship.

Shamrocks improved for Darragh going 6, he has the powers that Richie Reid does not and should suit Kilkenny at 6. He is well ahead of any other options imo. The options are not great, going off yesterday can't be putting Deegan there, very poor again, and bullied in another county final

Can't see kilcormac beating ballyhale if its a day like yesterday. A dry calm day would suit them more. Na fianna got away with it Saturday but they'll hardly be as bad again. They'll beat st martins who were lucky against rathnure who were the better team for a long tíme but gave 2 poor goals.

Ballyhale na fianna leinster final would be one to look forward to.

Jordan Molloy's running and energy was fantastic. His only fault sometimes is his end product, whether thats a pass or a shot (one shot during the second half was eerily reminiscent of the shot dropped into the keepers hand in the AI semi final). OLG forwards looked a bit lost but it was the intensity of the Ballyhale forwards that meant that the OLG backs were hitting balls down on top of their forwards with snow on them. If ever you wanted to show a young lad that the first line of defence is the full forward line, you'd show them some of Ballyhale's pressuring.

It's hard to know where OLG go from here, less than two years ago they were a whisker away from an all Ireland club championship but right now they seem like a team that can't handle the pressure.

Regarding the referee, I thought he did a decent job. The game flowed fairly well for the most part in tricky conditions and while the game boiled over at times he kept them mostly in check. One "foul" on Paddy Deegan aside I thought they did ok. I think another poster mentioned Peter Burke above, Burke, Everard and Beehan are three refs that control games well and overall I think the standard has gone up in the last few years.

Also well done to Barrow Rangers, I remember them losing the county final to John Lockes maybe 15 years ago and it's been a long road back for them since then. As their playing number increase, if they can stay up a few years we could see them challenging for intermediate.

I’ve long been an advocate of Mikey Carey at six and maybe Molloy at seven and Darragh Corcoran at midfield could work.

Corcoran and Carey are a bit similar in that they have all the physical attributes but possibly need a bit of work on the first touch and striking at times.

Mikey is better in the air and knows how to play the position very effectively but unfortunately he prefers the freedom out on the wing. Maybe he could work as a defensive midfielder alongside Cian Kenny. He’s well able to take a few scores from there too if he gets the opportunity to get forward.

All of these things need to be looked at during the league and definitely Daire O’Neill has to get a run.

For all the talk of the standard being poor in the local championship, I thought a lot of players across the grades showed they have a chance at the top level if they get proper coaching and s&c.
We’re not as far away as some on here would have you believe and with a bit of luck could have been going into 2026 as defending champions.

Listening to the radio after the Ballyhale game with Ronnie and Taggy it sounds like the following lads were called but could be wrong:

Liam Moore, Timmy Clifford and Patrick Lacey (Dicksboro)

Ian Byrne, Cathal Beirne and Tomas Mullally (Glenmore)

David Barcoe and Rory Glynn (Clara)

    Brian Cody (Shamrocks)

    Conor Mcmahon (Comer)

    Niall Brennan (Lisdowney)

I would like to see Osin knox, Paul Cody, Cillian Hacket, Padraig Dempsey, Paddy Langton, Denis Walsh and Ivan Bolger get a trial.

I'd be fearful for the future if I was an OLG supporter in the next few years. I thought they had been poor enough all year they were starting matches well and fading out spectacularly but managing to get over the line through experience and that bit of cuteness winning instils. In the Championship they got the easier side of the draw in my opinion and the absolutely fell into the final struggling to the get past Clara and Vegas where Ballyhale dismissed Thomastown and muscled there way past the Boro. I was sure OLG would raise their game for the final and sight of Ballyhale would spur them on to put in a great performance. As has been the case for the last few months I actually think it was their big names that let them down. Huw Lawlors head I'd say was already on a beach in Bondi the 3 goals the conceded against Clara were all things he would normally deal with in his sleep. Deegan and Butler look like they're heads are elsewhere too. Molloy was the only bright spot for them. The OLG's bench was so quite and unanimated at any point in the final it was strange to see. This O'Loughlins team has always struggled for top end forward talent but their back were the rock that their success was built on and that is starting to crumble now. Lawlor will be a huge loss for O'Loughlins next year Paddy Deegan will be another year older and Butler is getting further and further from his last consistent stretch of games. I don't see much coming through at underage for O'Loughlins and while I don't think they'll be in relegation trouble or anything I would see them as outside the top 4 teams in the next few years and possibly mid table. If Huw only goes for a year and they don't loose anyone else they might come back and challenge again but they will need to develop some forward talent.

I reality Shamrocks probably should have been 5-6 points up at half time in that game only for some very errant shooting. It wasn't that close a game at all once the goal went in it was all over bar the shouting and handbag stuff. Conor Kelly can have no arguments about his red a stupid strike with the hurl to the guts. Owen Wall could have seen the line twice in the same break in play hitting Dara Mason from behind in the space of 2-3 minutes while all the fighting was going on under the Ollie Walsh stand. Richie Reid should have seen a red for striking Owen Wall in face with the hurl earlier although Wall started all that and was trying to head butt Reid when he pushed the hurl up into his face. Paddy Mullen was also equally lucky not to see the line again for a punch.

It was a dreadful game but fair dues to Ballyhale they know how to win and a record breaking 21 titles since 1972 is some testament to them. 12 for TJ ain't too shabby either.

Looking at the Kilkenny back 7 from the semi this year, I would be saying we could be seeing a huge turn over.

Murphy should be gone imo and Tallis, Mason or Galwey to get the job.

Butler has been poor for both Kilkenny and OLG he should have a huge fight on his hands to hold onto that jersey.

Huw Lawlor will be boarding a plane soon unfortunately and will be an enormous loss.

S Murphy is not a corner back and should be fighting for a jersey on the half back line T Walsh our other corner back is also gone with his cruciate injury for Tullaroan so we need another corner back here too.

Mike Carey there is definitely a place for him on the half back line but I'm not sure 5 is it.

R Reid we don't have a luxury of playing him in the back 6 we don't have enough around him to allow him not to mark his man could possibly be used as a deep lying midfielder but would probably stay too deep.

P Deegan he can't be on our half back line again unfortunately. If they want to use his energy up front thats another story.

This is a massive rebuilding job and one Derek should have been tackling over the last few years. It's a huge opportunity for players on the fringe of the squad and new players in to stake a place. The two Cororans should be in there and see how they go, D Blanchfield needs to be given a position and left there. P Moylan will try and stake a spot on the FB line no doubt. Young Bolger, J Neary and Vereker are in there from what I've heard. N Rowe, Langton, E Lyng and possibly more will be given chances

I also heard Zach Bay Hammond is going back to play soccer and Billy Ryan is going travelling too.

If we're missing Tommy walsh, Huw lawlor, Billy Ryan, Harry Shine and Zac Bay then Dreak has alot of work to do to get a squad ready for championship

Is Derek at fault for not bringing through more players the last few years or are they simply not there? He seems to be too loyal to a few, Tipperary went through a couple of years of rebuilding and won the AI this year, we’d be in a much better position now if Derek started rebuilding 2 years ago

    Last Years Team

Murphy(needs replacing - 36 soon)Tallis must be ahead of him with puck outs alone

Butler( needs replacing, very poor last 2 years) Love to see Carey in the full back line

Lawlor - (Massive loss and impossible to replace)

Murphy( needs replacing - not a full back line man)

Carey( grand will find a place for him, maybe full back line)

Reid( weak link cannot be number 6 )

Deegan (Needs to be shipped on, absolute liability, too slow and skill level poor)

    Molloy and Kenny (very good)

Forwards are ok in fairness need a few good subs to come after 50-55 mins as we tire out due to incredible work rate and some lads are getting on.

From what I've heard Tommy Walsh is expected back Feb or March and I'm assuming H Shine would be the same if not a little earlier as he did his before the AI semi final and Tommy did his during the club league campaign.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭tbiggertycome

Well as far as I know the OLG and Ballyhale lads will be in the same pub this afternoon and Loughmore Castleiney are coming down to KK for pints this evening too. Could be some craic the top of John Street this evening and tonight. Wouldn't be too worried about bad blood, lads don't have to be best friends they just have to be able to play together. Sure plenty of club teams will have lads who can't stand each other but it doesn't stop them playing together.

For someone who ships alot of criticism Village87, I actually agree with all of your sentiments re our defence. Hard to argue against it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 322 ✭✭KK36

Never an issue once the final whistle is blown.

The Village and The Shamrocks county lads nearly killed one another around 10 years ago in the final and went on to backbone the Kilkenny team to win the all ireland the following year.

Was it Jackie that head butted c Fennelly and got the line

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 322 ✭✭KK36

A huge number of incidents went on that day. Some of it was on the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,458 ✭✭✭Marrooned

bang on the money, they should have started rebuilding three years ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 terracedgarden

Looking at the photos Billy Culleton posted on Facebook, there was a lot of handbags going on during and after last Sunday's final. Paddy Mullen in the thick of most of them. Hope Henry and Ballyhale have a successful Leinster campaign to shorten the winter. Then onto assembling an u20 squad with Kilkenny. Best of luck to all clubs representing us in Leinster, football, hurling and camogie.

Think a bit of a rebuild was more obvious after the 23 All Ireland being honest, we were murdered in that 2nd half.

Anyway no sign of a Podcast from Mickey Walsh and Scally just yet for this week, hopefully a last one for end of championship comes out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 221 ✭✭neverbet

Very easy to say that and I think we would all have liked a rebuild if it was possible. So the question is what would it have looked like back then and what does it look like for next year.?In my opinion as I have said before many times , it has been an achievement to keep us in the top 3 with our lack of underage success. Furthermore I don't envy Lyng and his management trying to keep us there with Huw and Billy apparently not available and very few exciting readymade prospects from this years club championships. A reality check is needed and expectations tempered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 The Flying Donkey

I agree with your assessment. Unfortunately, we have two fewer options for the backs with the likes of Zach Bay (who was usually on the 26) has stepped away to play soccer and Daire O’Neill has turned down the invitation to the county panel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 black and amber rock

Did Daire O' Neill actually turn down the invite? He looked like he could had a big year for kilkenny at wing back the way he was hurling this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,852 ✭✭✭Village87

Has Daire O'Neill turned down the invitation? That's very very disappointing if true, he was nailed on left wing back for me, absolutely fantastic athlete, hurler , tough as nails and has come on incredibly well the last 2 years, he looks every inch an inter county hurler mentally and physically

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 121 ✭✭terryrogers

Whatever about a rebuild, an effective manager needs to embrace some level of change at least, bring in new talent even to keep established team members on their toes. E.g. look at Liam Cahill and how he brought Rhys Shelley, Darragh McCarthy, Andrew Ormond, etc into his team. Did anyone in Tipp believe last year that Shelley & Ormond would be key team members this year? Reward rarely comes without at least some level of risk.

And on the point of tempering expectations... given the consistent successes of Kilkenny club teams at all levels over the past 10 years, I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect to be challenging for the All Ireland most years. Don't let another OLG no show in a county final dampen expectations too much...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 The Flying Donkey

From what I understand, he has turned it down. His previous experience with the county panel probably fed into his decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,313 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

Are Lawlor and Ryan definitely gone for the full intercounty season or might be back by the championship?

When people are saying Zac Bay Hammond is playing soccer is he having LOI in mind or just playing locally? Seen on FAI connect app recently he was playing for Fort Rangers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭nippy corner foward

Thats very dissapointing. I was hoping he would commit. He was there a few years ago and didn't get much of a look at all. Paul cody got messed around aswell. Obviously only 15 can play but maybe they just werent happy with the way things went. Pitty eddie donnelly wouldn't give it a go but it is what is now and they will have to move on. To be fair everyone knew a few months ago billy and huw were going travelling. Its hard to stop anyone. The only hope management have is if they go and come back February or march and try get up to speed. Huw hasnt being right the last few weeks. Young glynn half the size and he up catching ball over huw head and burying a goal. To be fair to lyng he squeezed every last drop out of codys team. The proof of the pudding is there i think it was only 2 new players he started since codys last game shane murphy and jordon molloy. There is absolutely no doubt this team is on the wane and is over due fresh blood. Kk done what many counties done when winning senior all irelands they completely neglected underage. Kierans winning was a absolute farce. Winning that and young lads thought they were made and go out and win nothing at minor and u21.Managers selected who werent up to scratch. No s&c. For years i went to u21 matches and they were absolutely bullied out of it. They didnt start doing s&c properly till lyng took over the u20.He was told he better get results with the money this was costing. That was the attitude from member of county board. That was a very lucky all ireland and some of the better lads like billy drennan has gone completely backwards. The chaps confidence is completely gone and he needs to go back to the club and start again because galmoy aren't far away beaten by the last 3 winners in the junior. Theres much better players than him out there. Id be very suprised if he makes it this year.I know its junior but i was very impressed with jack kelly and joe healy. It will be intresting to see how these go in intermediate they have some nice hurlers and a very good ff line and play a nice brand. Some shaky moments in defense and richie doyle didnt have his best game . The number 6 o neill is a fine hurler.I accept the fact that kk arent winning underage and getting bet in finals is no good and although the senior final was poor the other two finals were very good. Two close senior semi finals and gowran if they had to set up right could of being closer at the end. They are on the look out for a new management team. The standard of club hurling in kk is fairly strong. I belive theres more jordon molloys and stephen donnellys in the county if they were given a chance. Derek was absolutely terrified to give lads a chance and always went back to the lads that were always there. Theres no denying derek has being very conservative. Theres going to be a huge rebuild on in 2 or 3 years time who ever will have to do it. Mcmahon of comer is a hardy bit of stuff and could offer something. Oisin knox has being good a few years and got 2 goals off lawlor the day in ttown they nearly won. He should be brought in and helped with his recovery. For some reason lads down south dont get much of a look in. Vegas are senior 12 years and cant seem to get anyone in.surely theres a few down there worth a look.padraig Dempsey. Mooncoin the same. Heneberry the best number 6 fir years only called in a few years ago and played a walsh cup match and gone. It was obvious he had potential a few years ago.7 lads from loughlins will probably be cut and a few from ttown like peter macdonald could be cut. Is tommy ronan worth a look? Heading into his 4th year derek surely has his mind made up on a number 6. It was very obvious eoin cody was too easily bottled up in the corner. After all the wides he drove in the first half it was baffling someone like butler didnt mark him. Infairness to finnon himself and molloy were the best of a poor loughlins team. He deserves a proper run with kk imo id like to see him get a few runs at number 6 before corcoran comes back. Paddy mullen starting inside spooked loughlins and he is a real wrecking ball but needs to be very careful because no use getting sent off sitting on the bench. Its very easy be a hurler on the ditch and come on here and criticise but im sorry the amount of mistake paddy deegan makes is absolutely cruel. Kk cant go into another campaign with paddy deegan in the backs. Theres better players in the county and derek will have to grow a pair of balls.he is a complete liability and its another step backwards if he starts him.Already kiely has dropped Flanagan and ben o connor dropped lehane, luke meade and a few others. Ive yet tonhear who is gone from kk but loughlins and ttown will get cut. J̌The only hope we have is eddie brennan and corcoran have a bit of say. I dont think doherty or wall had much of a say and left after one year.Tallis when playing u20 for lyng had plans for puckouts, overload one side and pinging puckouts. For whatever reason scruff puckouts have being absolutely desperate. What in the name of god does the stat lad be at. One match in the park he must of drove 4 over the sideline and his poor puckouts has probably affected his game..he said in a recent interview he doesnt like doin them. In his prime he was absolutely fantastic we will never forget that save against duggan. He won many a match for kk but that was then and this is now. But he said himself he was very dissapointed with the 2 goals against tipp. If that was 2 years ago they would of being stopped. Its blatantly obvious how poor they are.To be fair to mason he has trimmed up a bit and is a very solid keeper. Alot of the shamrocks lads referenced herity after the match doing interviews. Very disappointing he wasnt snapped up before going to tipp or what were they looking at. Surely to god he could of being brought in as a goal keeping coach. The first job is to try tallis in the goal and give him a few games because he will work with a puckout strategy.scruff doesnt have any intrest in that. It's being said here million times why havent they tried a few lads corner back. Someone with a bit of divilment and pace. Ivan bolger or jeff neary.if zach was there could he of done a stopping job on someone. Killian corcoran. Theres definitely hurlers there and like what all managers do they make hard calls. Gather up who they think and train them very hard. Play to your strenghts and have a game plan. We havent got that. A really poorly coached team. Id go as far as saying ballyhale are better coached than kk.Shane murphy was never a corner back. it will be intresting to see what happens but when push comes to shove derek will probably pick 13 of last years team.moylan will get a few runs in the league if he has a bad game they will put mikey carey back there.Blanchfield, corcoran and reid will probably be tried until corcoran has a bad match and richie will be back at 6 and deegan probably back on the wing. Midfield will stay the same. Mullen, cody, john donnelly, stephen donnelly,tj,mossy. Few lads will get one or two league matches, ian byrne, timmy clifford, eoghan lyng, hopefully patrick lacey a really exciting foward but it will be more or less the same team

the trouble is a lot of players were messed around by Lyng who kept reverting back to the old reliables for want of a better word. Most players I would feel would give it everything if they thought the rewards would be there for the huge effort and commitment required.
