Yeah it doesn't seem to be the usual vs other campaigns does it? Going by the mail they sent / comments in other threads it's going to go over the application - so you/the person section, what we've filled in for the panel and the competencies. Somebody in another thread was asked about a project they did in college as they'd written about it - so I'm expecting that. I've applied for 2 of the panels (Data 1st and Infra 2nd choice) so I don't see how we'll have time to talk about what I've put in the form AND the competencies 😅 ? I didn't do STAR examples for my application at all and didn't give lots of detail because I knew they'd ask about what I'd written / have me expand? I've written STAR examples for the competencies and had ChatGTP help me summarise them into a cheat sheet so I can glance over them on the bus. A friend who works in a different area told me not to stress out too much about STAR - just relax and be yourself - the story can tell itself and be natural vs rehearsed so I'm going for that approach.

Honestly I think everyone is doing that for their interview 😂😂, I've been coming here daily to get updates from everyone that has interview coming up so that I can prepare my own as well, I believe mine is on the same day as yours.

I have my interview next Friday! October 3rd. Any chance theres someone to has their interview first and can give me pointers? 😂

First face-to-face interview i’ve done in a long time so i’m so nervous! I graduated over a year ago too, so i’m pretty rusty 🙁

what panel are you on? I didn’t yet receive a date for interview but I think your surname starts with T as well. So my interview should be around you. Not email yet

Just get STAR based answers prepared based around the panels, personal answer you applied for including appendix A, also whatever you wrote on your application in the panel specific questions, make sure you are able to expand that answer in star method especially if you put in some examples in that

Pay attention to who is currently asking questions and what competency they are covering. They will be looking for you to address the bullet points in those competencies so your answer should check off as many as you can to maximise your score.

My head is staring to explode trying to practice for this! 🤯

Still no interview date for me. Do you reckon there'll be technical questions? I would assume so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 amellhellos

The panel answers you wrote, consider those the type of technical type of questions that you should answer in STAR method, any examples you wrote in the panel sections you applied for, have longer answer of those examples you put prepared as you may be asked otherwise expand that answer and/or after another good star method style example 2 prepared as well on the side.

May I ask how? Mine is on the 30th, just want to make sure that as well as the information I got before from different interviews (private sector) and from what I learned from here is accurate and kept in mind for when I do this interview next Tuesday

I have a question, I remember you mentioned getting information about this competition from Reddit too and another thread created apparently from here, do you know where I can find them so that I can read through them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭tk123

Sorry I read tons of posts without really keeping track. There’s an subreddits for both the Irish and uk civil service on Reddit and people will often post in the general Ireland ones too

Yeah had a look around a bit, I'm honestly just very nervous to be honest but hopefully it will be fine

At the start they’ll say who’s covering what. If 'Bob' says he’s doing Leadership Potential, then every question from him is testing you against those bullet points.

He might ask: “Tell me about a time you had to deliver something through others or bring a team with you on a difficult change.”

So an example answer might be - In my last role we had to introduce a new reporting system. I suggested phasing the rollout and flagged the risks of moving too quickly to management - that showed I’d thought about the wider implications and had a clear perspective. I ran a workshop to get the team up to speed, shared what I’d learned, and encouraged them to suggest improvements - that showed adaptability, support, and maximising the team. I passed those suggestions back up the line and some of them were adopted, which meant I’d contributed to shaping the process. The team hit the deadline smoothly and our feedback influenced how the system was rolled out more widely.

That single story covers nearly all the Leadership Potential points they’re marking you against.

It’s worth having a couple of examples prepared, but really it’s the competency bullet points you need to know. People get hung up on memorising their examples and then freeze if they get a question they haven’t prepped for, because they can’t go off script.

Also, watch out for them flipping the question — they might ask when you didn’t do something, or a time you failed, just to see how you handle it.

Best of luck with the interview.

best of luck! It would be lovely if you could share your experience tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 amellhellos

Thank you so much, I'll just make sure that everything I put in my application that I can say it confidently without fear or anything, it won't be my first time doing STAR based interview but it will be the first time through a public sector and I want to be prepared as much as I can, Thank you so much for the advice, I will keep that in mind tomorrow when I do my interview.

I will do so, I'm sure the person who created and started this thread that is also doing their interview tomorrow will share what happened (enough to know without exposing who we are individually outside here), I'm scared to **** but I just pray to God and just hope all will be well 🥹😭

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 amellhellos

Thank you and I'll post a bit about the interview tomorrow evening as some tips 😭😭😭

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 amellhellos

Anyone who is also doing the interviews tomorrow, I wish you the very best of luck 🤞

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25 coffee table jazz

Relax man. I've been on these boards. They'll be sick of interviews by now and just want things to go smoothly. As long as you answer somewhat competently it's all good.

The worst interviews for the boards are the painfully awkward ones where people really struggle, it really takes it out of you and then you've to interview another person 30 mins afterwards.

    Good luck.

how did everyone get on? I don’t know if I did well or rubbish lol 😅

Had a separate interview the other day for another place and thought the same, I’m sure you did fine. Did you find it very formal or casual?

Best of luck with the result anyways!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭tk123

I found it casual/relaxed enough but thats how I'm used to communicating in my last job if that makes sense? Possibly they thought I way too relaxed lol. Some of the tech q's I didn't have answer for so stumbled a bit on them and one of the others I couldn't think of an example and they kind of reworded it to help me along.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 MamaFia

You’ll be fine, best of luck. Were technical questions related to what you wrote in job application or were like random stuff like how would you clean data etc

My questions were both what I'd written and other questions. Cleaning data was one, I think choosing an extraction method was another and data from different sources? I can't remember the rest! 🤯
