SSeemingly it's only like 1.5/2 inches thick so nothing too penal. Would assume ropes be set back a good bit too

Yes...they are not daft so imagine set up is as perfect as it can be for them...

You can see bryson looking to drive the 1st. The americans would love that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,897 ✭✭✭Trampas

Bryson and Thomas were trying to drive the first. USA want it a putting competition as more than likely suit them they believe so rough isn’t going to punish them. It’ll be driver all over the place. So if you’re looking for shot shaping and course management you’ll be disappointed

It's why i think he might be teeing it up first, he'd love it

As much as I want Europe to win, be great to see the US drive the first, kick the show off with a bang

Opening session in the morning decides the overall winner more often than not so crucial Europe get off to a good start.

Eagerly awaiting the pairings announcement for the foursomes tomorrow morning as I think Europe must get off to a good start, even 2-2 would be a strong result.

Europe Foursomes I would predict -

    1. Rahm/Hatton
    2. Hovland/Aberg
    3. McIlroy/Fleetwood
    4. Lowry/Rose

Could be Lowry/Straka again or even Straka/Rose but think Straka might be sat for the first foursomes session. MacIntyre/Rose another possibility but they have not practiced together this week so looks like that partnership from Rome is being split up.

Europe Fourballs are a lot more unpredictable with big players more likely to sit for a session here.

    • McIlroy looks like he will pair up with Shane Lowry for potentially one session and Matt Fitzpatrick for the other?
    • Matt Fitzpatrick has been partnered with Ludvig Aberg a lot so that seems a plausible pair.
    • Aberg could also pair up with Hovland in fourballs too and I think one of Aberg/Hovland/Rahm will partner up with Rasmus Hojgaard in this format.
    • Rahm and Hatton could play in this format too but I think they might just play one fourballs and sit the other as in 2023 but Rahm may go all 5.
    • Hatton and Lowry won a match together in 2021 and might be trotted out again.
    • Rose and Fleetwood seems to be likely for one fourballs session, obviously Rose and MacIntyre again is a possibility but not probable.
    • MacIntyre and Straka seem to have the least obvious partners, maybe they will play together?

US Foursomes I would predict -

    1. Scheffler/Henley
    2. Schauffele/Cantlay
    3. DeChambeau/Young
    4. Thomas/Griffin

Bradley has gone with pods all week which makes it fairly predictable. DeChambeau with Griffin and Thomas with Young is also plausible but DeChambeau and Young play the same ball which makes them more likely. I think Burns/Morikawa will be on hand to slot in on Saturday morning if one of the teams doesn't work.

US Fourballs are more predictable than Europe but still several possibilities -

    • Scottie Scheffler will play with JJ Spaun in this format I believe while Russ Henley may partner with Harris English and these four could be very interchangeable.
    • Sam Burns will not play with Scheffler this time and I think will play with Patrick Cantlay in this format or perhaps Collin Morikawa.
    • Morikawa could also partner up with Harris English as they have been put together in practice several times.
    • DeChambeau and Thomas seems like a possibility but that quarter including Young and Griffin also seems interchangeable.
    • Finally, Schauffele could stick with Cantlay if they are hot but I actually think he might not play fourballs at all and just foursomes with Cantlay.

Overall it will probably come down to the foursomes and I think Europe have a great shout with having such an experienced and settled team but the US do have the potential for some strong new pairings. Hoping for some great singles match-ups on Sunday - Rahm/Scheffler and McIlroy/DeChambeau would be brilliant.

Biggest cheer of the evening so far at the introductions goes to…….. the military.

DefDefinitely pumping the crowd with that 1st pairing, that could be wild. Think Rahm/Hatton take that one.

Aberg and Fitzpatrick together v scheffler and Henley...hard to call, would imagine Scheffler conjures up enough magic

Morikawa and English v mcillroy and fleetwood...europe will take that one id imagine

Schauffle and Cantlay v Macintyre and Hovland...can see US grinding it out.

    DeChambeau/Thomas vs Rahm/Hatton

    Scheffler/Henley vs Åberg/Fitzpatrick

    Morikawa/English vs McIlroy/Fleetwood

    Schauffele/Cantlay vs MacIntyre/Viktor Hovland

I'd imagine Europe in match 1 and 3, US in match 2 and 4

Thomas/Dechambeau is an interesting one. Could be a disaster in foursomes, or a stroke of genius. Smart money on the former I assume

No surprises anyway. Thought Lowry would get a pick but no doubt we'll see him in the afternoon.

Fitzpatrick and aberg is a surprise. Neither have any recent form. That's a definite lost cause and a very strange choice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 PL2015

Agree - US definitely favourites in Match 2 (Fitzpatrick has a 0-3 foursomes record) and Europe clear favourites in Match 3. Would lean US in Match 4 and lean Europe in Match 1 but could go either way and 2-2/2.5-1.5 seems like a safe bet.

Bradley is making a big call with the DeChambeau/Thomas pairing and could be a masterful play but if it goes pear-shaped I think it possibly scuppers his whole weekend and puts him under massive scrutiny.

Really DeChambeau is emerging as the most interesting and pivotal player in this RC, I'm 50-50 on whether he will get 1 point or 4 points and that is what will make the difference I think.

For the afternoon, Lowry and Straka will be out either together or Lowry with McIlroy and Straka with perhaps Rahm, Rose with Fleetwood, and Hojgaard with Hovland or Rahm.

On the US side, Burns and Cantlay, Scheffler and Spaun, DeChambeau and Young, Thomas and Griffin I would guess?

Matt Fitz has 7 top 10's in his last 9 events, not too bad!

Scheffler will surely play with Burns in fourball I'd have thought

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,024 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

Wouldn't be surprised to see Straka play only once before singles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

Since the US Open Matt Fitzpatrick has finished outside of the top 20 once.

    His form figures are: T17/T8/T4/T4/T8/T32/T17/T6/5/T5

7 Top 10s from his last 9 events.

It could be argued that he is Europe's most inform player!!

Aberg has certainly colled off this year since winning early on, but he has shown flashes in the last couple of months.

Might have been cruel not to pick him, but maybe it would've been the right choice.

Another weird thing with the team announcement was suddenly Donald disappeared and there was only Keegan. I thought Donald might have had a medical event. Surely the two lads are capable of a mature conversation together but it seems not

Your on a roll here. Matt Fitz has a very good recent record and they interviewed each captain about their picks separately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,075 ✭✭✭coillcam

It can simply come down to how their games compliment each other based on the odd/even layout. Just as much as chemistry in the partnership is important.

On first glance it does seem like it's not obvious but I'm sure there's a good reason they've been given the nod.

Only a couple of years ago Bob Mac was considered a bench warmer by us all. Now he's paired with Hovland in the first session. Tough ask though to close out against Xander and Cantlay.

I'd expect Lowry and Rory for the afternoon session. If not they'll definitely be paired tomorrow. Shane probably is pegged to play once each day unless there's some shift in dynamics/strategy.

Not long to go now, hopefully the first US pairing becomes a mess as is possible when looking at it
