I'm going on the Saturday, the tickets were expensive, but when i got the option couldnt pass it up, expecting Adare to be more expensive and harder to get.

Never been to a Ryder Cup before, anyone have any tips or advise on how to treat it compared to a "Normal" golf event?

Bring a pocket FM radio with headphones. The official website says they they will provide:

Live audio streaming of SiriusXM’s Ryder Cup Radio broadcast, no subscription or authentication required

It's not clear if that means they will rebroadcast it on a local FM signal or if you will need to run an app. If your phone doesn't have an FM radio app, bring a pocket radio, just in case.

You couldn't bring a mobile into the K Club during the 2006 Ryder Cup so a pocket radio was an essential accessory and they sold thousands of them, I still have mine. I know technology has moved on and there's rarely a complete ban on taking gadgets into tournaments these days but if you're standing on the edge of a fairway out of sight of a scoreboard, a pocket radio or an FM app on your phone could be very useful.

European team looks like 11 pick themselves

Donald if based up to today then it’s straka, hojgaard, Aberg, Hovland, Rahm are in.

Last pick is really only open one. Even if straka moves into an auto pick spot then Hatton or Shane to take a pick. Wouldn’t be surprised if goes for Fitzpatrick but he wouldn’t be my pick

My 4 ball went to Rome for 4 days, unreal experience, a cross between top level golf and football for atmosphere etc, you need to up at the crack of dawn to be there for 6.00-6.30 am, it will be all park n rides and then buses etc to course, so have logistics planned well in advance for your nearest park n ride etc, quite often a few of these are located at major rail lines etc. There was taxi drop offs near course but these were hit and miss, lack of drivers, drivers not turning up etc …

Tee off was I think 7.30 am in Rome and we were let into course around 6.45-7 so also have ur plan for what your going to do, we did 1st tee one day, then first green another day which was also very good as we could pretty much see the whole hole, then plan for what your doing after that and so on. We sussed out some places from Tv coverage of the Celebrity golf on the preceding days etc.

The organisation was great , the on course TV’s were gigantic, way above the level of the recent Open Championship in Portrush, they did mostly show live coverage of games except when players were putting out on greens etc, so you were always pretty much up to date.

Overall we were knackered coming home, we had 4 days of 35000 steps , not much sleep but would definitely do it again tomorrow

Rome was excellent for spectators. The best of the 4 that I have been to.

Pity that looks like no surprise picks in the European team. Always like when it could be a few. Also they really need to go back to 9/10 auto picks as with 6 they may as well go with 12 picks

I think Donald will still pick Fitzpatrick as whoever wins today will be to far down the rankings for him to pick them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,823 ✭✭✭Trampas

So Donald not doing his picks for another week. Is that to give Matty another week to make sure he gets his pick. Should be tomorrow

I wonder will Shane Lowry make it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,570 ✭✭✭The Big Easy

It's very hard not to pick Matt though, on most criteria?

I'm still horrified that Harrington didn't pick Rose in 2021, looks even worse in hindsight than it did at the time

He's a cert to be picked. Unless you think Donald drops him for Detry, Wallace, Hall, Garcia or others.... All unlikely selections imo.

Less said about Harrington’s time as captain the better.

Shane has always relied on a captain’s pick. I thought he qualified once but just seems to be on the bubble.

shane and macintyre will need to keep their emotions under control or the crowd and media might go after them.

I thought he automatically qualified last time out but I see he has never qualified, he has relied on a captain pick every time and will again this time out. Even though you would think he's be a good ryder cup player I checked his stats and he has a losing record in the 2 ryder cups he's been involved in..hopefully he can turn that around at Bethpage. As for the States what is going on with them is crzy regarding Keegan and whether he'll be a playing captain or not. Don't think playing captain is possible but it looks like he'll pick himself. The captain of a Ryder Cup team is very important so if he does play I think it will affect them big time. Having a poor captain can be the winning and losing of the tournament. Europe over the years have had the more stable captains bar Clarke, Harrington and Faldo

Interested to hear why you think Harrington wasn't a 'stable' captain. Was he worse than Mark James who didn't play one of his wilds cards until the singles and left Langer at home?

Lowry deserves to be picked regardless of his Ryder Cup record. He came 7th in the points table. It's only relatively recently that only the top 6 automatically qualify.

Hindsight is 20-20 vision. Rose wasn't anywhere near the form in 2021 that he is now.

For me it is the top 11 here:

And Jon Rahm who has been very consistent in LIV Golf…

Good Team… On paper Rasmus would be the weakest and he ain't that weak… A lot of Europeans in form..

It was how I felt at the time based on his career and past RC form. He had come close to winning the PGA at Wentworth in the last qualifying tournament as well.

I felt strongly about it at the time and probably posted such here, I would feel similarly about Fitzpatrick now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,823 ✭✭✭Trampas

Jessie James was awful also. Was it 3 players he didn’t play at all until Sunday?

Always felt Harrington wouldn’t make a good captain. More that he’s always comes across as trying anything and everything to achieve what he wants to achieve than having a set plan and able to thinker if needs be. Not that anyone didn’t want to play for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he changed his teams a half a dozen times in last 1 hour before entering them

Think James was another poor one. Think I mentioned Padraig it as I just listened to No Laying up podcast and heard one of the pundits mention that they believed Harrington didn't know what he was doing so was in my mind when talking about poor captains

I agree was just surprised that his record is poor enough in the tournament. Always think of him as a gritty fighter. Hopefully he can improve those stats next month

Amazingly all the poor captains seem to be the ones who captain the team at away Ryder cups.

    Read a surprising stat.

Since 1979, the year it changed from GB&I to Europe vs US, if you look at the total points won by both teams, there are only 3 points between them.

The US has 3 more points won over the last 45 years or so of playing this event.

I was amazed at how little there is between them over that time

Personally I would go with Nicolai Hojgaard instead of Fitzpatrick - think Fitzy has been battling for form this year and his RC numbers are some of the worst of any recent players. Played in 3 RCs and has only 1pt from 8 matches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,642 ✭✭✭newport2

    This, 100%.

Also, while I didn't agree with several of Harrington's decisions at the time when he was captain, I think the US would have won that year no matter what he did. They played brilliant and had momentum with them from the start.

Plus, it all had the backdrop of the pandemic disrupting everything. Even so, the USA team were very strong and we were simply outmatched. I know that's easy to say in hindsight, but a glance at the teams tells it all.

Welp there it is, Bradley has not, in fact picked himself. As he was never likely to if he fancied actually winning the thing.

JT, Morikawa, Griffin, Cantlay, Cam Young and Sam Burns are the American captain's picks.

Tough one as he'll likely be past his best by the time the next one comes around...Id imagine his experience being left out last time made him ultimately drop himself rather than skip giving a spot to someone who maybe should have qualified but was left out.

I think USA will win it. Some of European players are very streaky and will really come down if they’re hot or cold that week. Hovland, Fitzpatrick, Rose, Lowry are some examples. If off they can be terrible. Rose and Hovland can be awful some rounds. Lowry more a fourball than foresome as he can dovetail
