I know about the unease re the transfers but they're not an old team are they? Jack and conor Doyle, Seán Purcell are young. Enmett landy mid 20s im guessing? Niall Walsh hardly 30 either.

But yeah likes of emeralds and graiugenamanagh look like they'll be strong next few years

About time somebody else called you out for the negative rubbish you spout here ,sourced by someone obviously with a vendetta against the Co.Board and all management teams that are not to your liking. We have a very high profile under 20 management team ,best of luck to them and everyone will support their efforts . However ,bear in mind the much derided previous management brought us undefeated to an AI final where admittedly they underperformed badly on the day . That panel was not highly rated. The crop for the next few years certainly is and expectations will be high. I reckon we are almost totally reliant on this group to improve and progress our Senior squad going forward. Lets just have patience and see how it goes and maybe avoid your alleged source for the next few months.

On a far more sombre note the loss of Luke Harney has cast a shadow over all things hurling and will continue to do so for a long time to come. He was one of us and a good one. Hard to believe and God help his family and all who mourn him.

Top game hard to call but Danesfort are looking very decent. Dunnamaggin looked good as well though against Tullogher.

Village will be favourites for 2nd game. Gowran have looked decent as well but it will be a surprise if they reach the final again.

Call me out on what exactly? I wished henry and the high profile backroom team luck. We desperately could do with some underage success. Some might say its stronger set up than the seniors with stephen murphy the goalkeeping coach one of the best club goalies in kk the last decade.its no secret that michael rice is goal keeping coach.its about time kk county board put in a high profile underage management team given our very poor record but getting brian hogan aswell was definitely a coup. I know what i was told re dereks right hand man and this is the truth. The dump is also a dump.im not being negative either im being honest. No point buttering it up. There was definitely lots of doom and gloom after the tipp defeat but the u20 backroom has given things a bit of a lift. The county board have made some woeful decisions and have stood still the last decade. Seem more concerned about saving money some of the time.

Would Henry and his team been better to go with the minors and build up from there

Some of the comments in this post cross the line from fair reflection into being insulting towards men who have given their best efforts, time, and energy to their teams. It’s natural to debate outcomes and decisions, but personal remarks don’t sit well with most people who value the spirit of sport. Negativity only drags the conversation down, whereas many contributors here show it’s possible to disagree or criticise without making it personal.

what are you calling Nippy out about should we all bury our heads in the sand about the CB,that’s what has got us to this situation in the first place. I think he is calling a spade a spade unlike you constantly defending an inept CB who seem to be falling further and further behind. Just one question where would you think we are placed with facilities compared to all the other thirty one counties, I’d say we are fairly down near the bottom would you?

Probably take too long to get them to senior, these lads are 15/16/17. Will take 6/7/8 years to get them established and ready for senior intercounty. U20 is much more realistic turnover. By all accounts Kilkenny minor are average this year and all the big names are staying clear, while the u20 have been very competitive in minor at this age group and would expect to be in an All Ireland final at a minimum, avoiding any Munster team until the All Ireland final is also a bonus. avoiding Cork, Tipp, Waterford, Clare who bet them in Minor makes the path to the final much easier.

I think the Village will comeback up with plenty to spare over Gowran or anyone of the other two teams. I thought they would struggle in some games but they have not being tested in any game so far and I cant see that changing.

Young Ireland looked solid Saturday, good benchmark, id imagine very little between Gowran, Dunnamaggin and Danesfort, all balanced teams that probably lack a couple of forwards each.

Is Richie retired or just injured. You would imagine Danesfort would love to have him at this stage.

6 all star nominations for Kilkenny after, Carey and Lawlor only 2 backs which is fairly right looking back on semi final were our best 2 defenders. Jordon Molloy very very unlucky not to get a nomination but all others well deserved including the 3 players nominated up front along with Cian Kenny back in Midfield.

Any word seeping out of Ballyhale as to TJ and the brothers plans next year? Fierce quiet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭Village87

TJ will be 100% hurling with Kilkenny next year. I think TJ is 39 next year.

It's a sad reflection on the talent coming through in the county if he does continue next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 218 ✭✭Sir Chaz

It's a sad reflection if he continues and is picked for every game I presume you mean.

Reality is we need to move on from TJ as a starter. He could certainly still play a big part in a Noel McGrath type role, and his free taking, accuracy, and decision making in the closing stages would still be an asset for the team in my opinion.

He's still one of the best forwards in the county but he's naturally diminishing as every year passes, and senior inter county hurling at the top level is a very unforgiving place for a man who turns 39 next year.

I wouldn’t agree with that at all. If he continues next year, it should be seen as a credit to his own standards and commitment rather than a slight on younger players. Having an experienced player like him around can actually raise the bar for the talent coming through. Many have grown up seeing him as a great player of the highest integrity. They learn what it takes first hand to compete at the highest level. If he’s good enough to be there next year, and I hope he is, young players could see that as a challenge, an aspiration, not as an excuse.

Id be suprised if tj retires. Very lucky with injuries and is still hurling well. Huw lawlor will probably be nominated as kk captain if they win the county final. Different rumours about him so we will just have to wait and see. There was talk of scruff retiring but listened to a very honest interview with him lately. He doesnt like the modern game where puckouts have to be spot on. He isnt comfortable pinging puckouts to a lad standing still. He is very dissapointed with two of the goals concededed against tipp. He was like a cat in his prime but i think his confidence has being affected with the predictable puckouts. You would wonder what kinda training is done with puckouts because it was got worse over the years. Look at the job herity done with tipp. If you cant ping puckouts youre on the backfoot straight away. Its a big weaklink in kk. With all the stats and backroom team is it not very obvious that this is a big problem and very predictable Its an awful pity kk cant get a goal keeping coach or whats that about this day in age no goal keeping coach? Does he not want one or what?It was a big statement with the announcement of the u20 backroom team. Couldnt get better than stephen murphy thats why its baffling theres no goal keeping coach with the seniors. Looking foward to the matches this weekend and hopefully a few will put their hand up for the county. Glenmore are having a great year, relegation final last year, thats how small the margins are. Some nice young hurlers, cathal beirne and billy reid. Alan Murphy a big help back. Clara cant seem to put a full 60 mins together but if they do loughlins wouldn't want to underestimate them. Matt kenny should be back and is a very solid player. You would still have to fancy loughlins. Shamrocks and ttown the pick of the wknd and should draw a good crowd. Maybe better suited to a smaller venue. Jay burke a huge loss ttown have conceded lots of goals and no better team than Shamrocks to go for the jugular. Ronan corcoran is playing there was doubts over him so he will be a huge help. They will also have adrian mullen to come on. Intrestingly they have moved richie reid to the wing and daragh corcoran to 6. A big strong player but still a bit dangly. If he could work on his feet he could be an option at 6. It will be intresting to see how eddie Donnelly goes at 6. It would be great if he changed his mind. The bridge are playing more direct this year and its working better for them. Hitting liam blanchfield early with quick ball. Kevin blanch is a huge addition and the positioning of conor Murphy to 6 has worked well. Vegas are coming in a bit under the radar. They have being on the go a long time and you know what your going to get. They have a poor record in the park but winning the last day albeit on penalties will give them confidence. They never turned up at all last year and want to put in a big performance this weekend. I dont know what way oisin knox is but derek lyng could do worse than bring in a few lads from down south. Hopefully trials will take place later in the year. Theres a few lads on the senior panel a few years that arent improving and probably need to go back to their club and start again. I think they need to start looking at 25-26 year olds. Jordon molloy and stephen donnelly are just two lads that done well this year and id be suprised if theres not more players like this around the county. If we could get any kind of improvement with puckouts and a game plan that gets the best out of lads and be able to react to things on the line. Henry has eoin cody playing more of a free role so it will be intresting to see how he goes this wknd. Its very obvious bring him out if its not working inside but derek isnt keen on this but this has to be looked at. Hopefully eddie and niall corcoran will bring something differen. It feels like its the same team for the last 6 or 7 years,we simply cant go up to croke park year in and year out with that same half back line and make the same stupid mistakes. If deegan is on the team it has to be in the fowards. All good winning teams always used their half back line as a launch pad. The kk team desperately needs surgery but i dont know if derek has the courage to carry out this surgery. He will go back to this same team when the pressure is on. Apart from finding a settled midfield its more or less the same team. Im not sure what style play he is trying to implement. Puckouts are deplorable. Obviously the county board are happy enough because he got another two years. Im suprised he isnt under more pressure. I thought he might of beefed up the backroom team a bit more. Brian dowling or tom mullally would of being great additions. It was a coup for henry to get herity. He was available a few years. Very slow from a kk point of view not to get him involved especially when its an area that has being so poor.

He's workrate is still incredible. Its a pity a few players including one of his own clubmen hasnt upped his workrate yet after looking at him since he was a chap. Seen a county foward playing at junior level this year. His workrate is absolutely brutal even at club level. Dying moments of a match chasing the game and a free being dropped in. Most good fowards would at least make a dart out left our right create space look for a quick one. Just stood there and put the hurl up. Confidence completely gone with this chap and isnt even standing out at junior and hasn't done so.Cody always said ya have to go back and do it with your club and be a leader. He isnt even the clubs best player. This is junior level. He needs to be just left back with the club to try build up his confidence back up because he was a very good underage player and its not happening for him. If we go back to the likes of him again next year we're at absolutely nothing.

I don't see the problem with TJ still being such an important player for us, I thought last year was his best in a few years and when we needed someone to stand up against Galway and Tipp he was one of the few to do it, if he is still contributing like that next year he will still be an important player for us.

A lot is made of the fact that Rice is our goalkeeping coach, personally I don't see the problem with it, I know for a fact that over the last 2 years they've tried to work on things but Murphy has very little interest in changing his puckout strategy and reverts to type when any kind of pressure comes on, it's more an indictment of management that they have allowed him to do this and haven't made any change. I'd be hoping that next year we'll see Tallis or Galway get an extended run in the team to show what they can offer, previously I'd have slightly favored Tallis but having seen Galway up close a few times this year I think he could be the one to get the nod.

There was probably another year in Horgan too but sometimes a team needs to move on for development reasons. TJ is still one of our top 5 players but this team is getting on in age. By the looks of there could 12-13 players 28 and over and 6/7 of these lads are in there 30s. We are on par with Limerick when it comes to the oldest teams playing. All of these factors do not bode well for 5 years time, other counties are blooding young players and will have new teams in 2/3 years while we will be playing catch up.

On the Tj Horgan thing and retirement I’m pretty sure Tony Browne played right half back until he was 40 odd I don’t recall to many trying to retire him back then

Brick Walsh’s last few years under d McGrath he probably had more impact on the team than he did as a younger player

If a player is still contributing to the team and adding value why shouldn’t they keep going

As someone else mentioned Tj was exceptional in this years semi final imo even better than the 2 previous years vs Clare

Horgan seemed to mention spending time with family and the time required rather than any physical issues or injuries

Tj will walk into that KK next year once fit. I for one hope he stays on but that decision is his. No matter what happens the team needs new blood. We have not seen much of this under Lyng and I am not sure we will see it next year too. He will be under pressure after whats happened this year and last year. He also has Shefflin in his rear view mirror which might make him even more caustious to ring the changes.
