    St. Lachtains 1-08 v St. Martins 2-07

A first half of real championship intensity. Played in horrendous conditions, with players looking like they were playing on a slip and slide rather than a hurling pitch. Nightmare to watch the match, nevermind play in it. SM playing with the wind.

Great start for SL going into a 2-03 to 0-03 point lead. Fantastic work from Cathal O Leary for both goals. The first, a beautiful flick over the defender before running through and offloading to a teammate to finish. The second, a great first time flick around the last defender to the onrushing Maher to finish to the net. O Learys early influence brought about the introduction of Brian Byrne who has managed to curtail his influence since.

Credit to SM who didn’t drop the head and played themselves back into the game. Oisín Kelly’s puck outs have been massive, with one resulting in an opportunist goal from Sean Hunt after the ball broke around the square.

SL best have been Brian Kennedy wing back and Cathal O Leary in the forwards, assisted by Paddy Killeen. SM best have been Colin Hayes at wing back, Shane at midfield on the frees and Hunt in corner forward looks dangerous.

    St. Lachtains 4-13 v St. Martins 1-13

Before the game, I questioned were SL at the pace of intermediate and if their big players would stand up. At they did in abundance today. A beautifully taken early goal from O Leary to start the 2nd half would be a sign of the dominance to come for the rest of the game. Their defence didn’t give SM a sniff in the second half. Unfortunately for SM, this game followed a similar pattern to their group games. Resolute in defence and hard working, but looked like they were pucking a ball against a wall with how quick it was coming out of their attack. Cathal O Leary with another moment of magic for the fourth goal to set up Maher.

SL as a team were very impressive, especially in defence. If they can maintain this, they’ll be dangerous going forward. SM best served by Hayes, Cody and Shore in the second half

    Carrickshock 2-08 v Tullogher 1-09

Even enough first half with both sides having periods of control. Carrickshock have been economical with their chances, with John Power having a real impact in the full forward line. Two fabulous from the side line and an excellent assist for Eoghan O Neill for the second goal. I’m not sure who scored the first goal as I missed the first couple of minutes of the game. Carrickshock have been a bit indisciplined and overworked the ball at the back at times, but otherwise motoring well.

TR look a bit one dimensional to me at times, persistently dropping the ball in on top of Marty Murphy. Whilst he has won his fair share of ball and the TR goal came directly from this, Carrickshock seem to be able to predict it and are dealing with it fairly well. Too much of the ball has been dropped too far from the goal. Conor Hennessy is doing a great job dropping back into defence and has won a couple of frees. Midfield have been on a lot of ball but haven’t put it to great use. TR need to up their tempo and use the ball more efficiently or they’ll be caught here

Tullogher midfielder Jamie Lyng had a great game and kept them in it at times but overall when they let loose they were much the better team.Deffinetly hurled better than the last time i saw them with more fight and determination.Marty Murphy always looked dangerous with john power at the other end looked dangerous in first half.

Fair play to you lad. Got the 7 points prediction spot on. Didn't look like that with 15 to go.

Really enjoyable game. Carrickshock started like a house on fire with 1-1 in a few minutes. Only a good save by the tullogher keeper stopped it being 2-1

John power was excellent in the first half setting up 2 goals brilliantly and a couple of points. Adam Franks was buzzing around too and they had the tullogher defence in all sorts of bother. Gradually tullogher came into it with conor hennessy and Marty Murphy showing great leadership. Murphy had a mighty battle with niall tennyson at the edge of the square. Got 3 or 4 from play and set up a goal. Also his movement and workrate was massively up to previous.

Second half was tit for tat with shock keeping ahead before tullogher finished out strongly.

A feature of the game was the accuracy of Adam Franks and Andrew Murphy, probably the youngest players on their respective teams. Jake o dwyer, Seán Moore, Jamie Lyng and colman o sullivan other players who impressed.

Tight match between Tullaroan and the Bridge. The latter scored a David Blanch penalty goal after 5 minutes and led by up to 6 points but 5 points in a row from the 48th to the 54th minute had Tullaroan level and seemingly with the momentum but the Bridge edged it with 2 long distance frees from David Blanch.

Mossy did well for Tullaroan. Cathal Russell is slight but got some great scores. Bridge had a lot of steady performers, gave away a lot of frees. Conor Murphy and David Blanch did best in a game that could have gone either way

On 2 consecutive days in Comer, teams playing against the wind scored more. Clara were 7 up playing against the wind, Lisdowney level at full time.

Strong wind for the first 20 minutes today, the Bridge playing against the wind were ahead by 4 at h/t. Wind died a bit in the second half when Tullaroan scored 16 points playing into it

Big win for b&w s didn’t see that coming watching it fenians seemed terrified of losing rather than going for the win

Freshford dealt with martins fairly easily I thought martins are solid and gamey up to midfield but just haven’t the scoring forwards to get enough on the board the relegation final could go either way vs fenians

Really saw the rower and mooncoin as a 50/50 game the rower will be very disappointed

The c shock tullougher game was tit for tat for long periods the final score probaly flattered tullougher a bit c shock seemed to re jig there team a bit and style and tullougher probaly played more as a team throughout there midfield of o Sullivan and lyng is probaly one of the best pairs at intermediate level

Tullougher will need Wally back asap to progress I think c shock managed m Murphy as well as you can he’s some handful

Shamrocks looked very dangerous yesterday it’s great to see eoin Cody playing with such freedom while there 1st 15 is very good I don’t think they have the panel to go much further as they don’t have much experience to come off the bench anymore

Clara lisdowney was a great battle clara doing just enough

Gbc were awful against the boro despite the final score I would fear for them in the relegation final I think lisdowney might pip them

Thomastown Ballyhale match is the tie of the round. Thomastown don't seem to be using the ball as good as last year but have good strength in depth. Shamrocks have a good half back line but I think their full back line could be vulnerable and their bench is not as strong with Adrian Mullen not fully fit. Hard to call.

Glenmore have used the ball very well this year and may have too much for the Boro missing a few players.

OLG should beat Clara though the latter have a very decent forward line on paper with Paul Cody, Rory Glynn, David Barcoe, Conor Hoyne and Chris Bolger along with Liam Ryan.

Vegas have only lost 1 of their 6 matches and will fancy themselves against a Bridge side not playing as well as previous years

I think Shamrocks could go through a few Barron years but they do have another generation of very good Shefflin & Reid’s (Henry & Paddy’s sons) coming through on very good un11, un10 & un9 teams I have seen at local tournaments (think Michael Fennelly has 3 boys on younger teams again) so the wheel never stops turning in that club.

Can anyone say when fenians and St martins were last junior? 1970s??

Hard to call. Fenians are very hot and cold

Following Intermediate a bit more this year, but Shamrocks v Thomastown is a juicy fixture. Glenmore v Boro also a very good match up. Bit disappointed with our QF v Black and Whites. We are essentially going into a semi final with no test all year. The only team that put it up to us was St Martins in the first league match

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 470 ✭✭jamesbond2022

Wikipedia saying 1968 and 1974 either of them were junior champions

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78 ✭✭WibblyWobblyWonderman

To be fair, I don’t think there’s any team in intermediate that will give James Stephens a real test. 3 out of 4 of the next best teams were in their group and they walked the games. It would be a seismic shock if they don’t win the championship this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 470 ✭✭jamesbond2022

If c Kenny was to get injured that might bring them back to the pack a small bit so much of there game plan is built around him at 6 the weather and heavy ground from now on might also impact them but they still look a few steps ahead of the rest as you say

I would agree, worst possible draw for the Village. Should get through comfortably due to the difference in player resources between both clubs. Another 2 weeks of worsening weather and softening pitches could leave them undercooked and potentially vulnerable. In reality, it's the mental side of the game most key to the Village this year

  • Registered Users Posts: 28 terracedgarden

Delighted B&W survived after all the defeats they had. Pressure will be on v James Stephens, most peoples favourite to go back up. Surprised to see this fixture in Nowlan Park, groundsman must be confident that the pitch will hold up with so many games.

PS: any posters here play Lads & Dads hurling? I played the annual blitz in Abbottstown last Sat with my adopted club in Kildare. 25 teams from all over Ireland played.

It looks like 3 games in Nowlan Park for the Village to get back up senior which in theory should suit them. I still think their main challengers will be Tullogher and Moooin, I think if the weather keeps getting worse both will fancy giving them rattle in a semi final but I think if they get to a final they'll be hard to beat. Mooncoin haven't been as consistent as other years but the seem to be able to raise their game when they have too, you'd wonder why more of their players haven't ended up in county panels over the years. The action over the weekend was entertaining even if the weather did spoil some of the games. The Clara/Lisdowney was a cracker of a game and Lisdowney deserve a lot of credit for the fight they showed to stick in their and nearly bring the game to penalties. Clara had enough to get them through and I thought young Barcoeat half back was excellent towards the end of the game and in extra time, the 2 Glynn's and Hoyne were a handful. The game in Freshford was played in horrible conditions but the Boro will be delighted to have dug deep and get away with a comfortable enough win. GBC looked very one dimensional on Saturday and will need to bring way more fight for the relegation final. The Shamrocks/TTown QF looks the pick of the round and should be a cracker of a game. Shamrocks looked really good on Saturday but you'd have say Comer looked like a team who thought their work was done for the year by staying up. This will be the first real test for Thomastown's ability to win back to back titles, if they come through this they will fancy their chances and it'll be interesting to see what Henry and Herrity have up their sleeves for next week. On Thomastown, one thing that has really impressed me with them is Diarmuid Galway's distribution and presence in the goal, hopefully he'll get a good run with kilkenny next year.

1st up I have to commend Kilmacow for going out and playing an important game yesterday which guarantees them a quarter final and a place in the Junior league Final also, in what was such a tough week for all concerned down there in the past week. No doubt they can be extemely proud of themselves now.

I didn't see Tullogher beating Carrickshock by 7 either but they were the best best team overall although Carrickshock were very dangerous in the 1st half, could have easily had another goal or 2 before half time as Tullogher defence looked very shaky. Tullogher drove a lot of wides yesterday but Marty Murphy's ball winning ability was a massive boost as proved for their 1st goal especially. 2nd half Tullogher mainly controlled but Carrickshock were still very hard too shake off aswell, the goal near the end gave Tullogher some comfort and afforded them some breathing space from there to the finish. I would still tip Dunnamaggin to get bet of Tullogher as they will be a stiffer test I would feel, especially as they will still be without Wally.

Senior draw is so interesting especially Ttown v Shamrocks, sounds like Shamrocks have a few injury concerns which won't help seeing their panel is already so tight and small. I would tip O'Loughlins, Mullinavat and Dicksboro V Glenmore a really tight call, would not be surprised to see that one head ford to for extra time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28 kinghenry1

Think Glenmore will have too much for the boro myself and even without wally i still think Tullogher will beat Dunammagin.Think the shamrocks cuteness might be enough to get them over the line against Thomastown especially with Adrian Mullen back. They should be good games id say and well worth going to.Also fair play to Kilmacow for playing the weekend and i hope they win it out now as a tribute to Luke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 447 ✭✭droppingball

If Thomastown don't concede goals they have the firepower to match the shamrocks, shamrocks have plenty of armoury but there is gaps in that backline that can be got at. Great match to look forward and will be 50 50.

The way I would see it is Thomastown and Ballyhale are under a little bit of pressure at the back but have 2 good sets of forwards and O Loughlins have good back line but are struggling up front.

Could be a case that a Glenmore or one of the other teams nip in and win it.

I'd go with Thomastown, Glenmore, Bennetsbridge and OLG in the semi finals.

As an aside the league and shield finals are a joke now, total waste of time and teams are treating them that way.

Madness playing all intermediate and senior QFs in the park. The way the weather has been to have 8 matches in 8 days is ridiculous. Love having these matches in club grounds for atmosphere and close proximity to pitch side. Atmosphere in park can be poor. Co.Board just hungry for the money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28 kinghenry1

Have to agree love going to the club grounds around the county much better atmosphere .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,424 ✭✭✭blackcard

Totally agree with playing quarter finals at club grounds where you are right beside the action, can hear the hits going in and savour the athmosphere. Crowd gets lost in Nowlan Park
