Ive always assumed done deal is far too dodgy be using for watch purchases. At least with adverts you get to recognise the regular sellers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭H_Lime

In my case the advert I placed (on adverts) was seemingly doubled up onto done deal without my knowledge, or at least I didn't remember instructing it to or unchecking a box so it wouldn't. I dislike dd for similar reasons, if someone has positive feedback you can hopefully expect a straight forward transaction.

I find done deal very good and better than adverts for selling, there’s less low ball offers and if you know the scams it’s safe enough

The PayPal and courier one have been around for years, someone in cork was shown a fake bank transfer the other day to buy a car

    The internet isn’t for everyone

Generally if I'm selling something expensive I'd rather do it at a distance via c24 or on adverts where I can know who I'm dealing with ,done deal would concern me personally!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,285 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

I link potential buyers to my adverts account straight away and that helps

    Horses for courses.

Done Deal is suitable for some things, Adverts another and C24 different again.

I just put up the warning because I thought it worthwhile to highlight the methodology. This was for a relatively low value item, but nonetheless, it was a scam that would have given access to a personal financially linked account.

The scammer started with asking for delivery to a real residential address. And through the communication, it seemed genuine, until it went down the email route and I smelled a rat.

The phish email was well crafted and professionally done, but knowing where to look, it quickly became apparent that the 'at first glance' legitimate domain was in fact an obfuscated redirect to a dodgy domain.

It takes only a moment of inattention from even a seasoned seller to fall foul of such things, and I'm the first to admit I've been far down the route a few times before pulling back.

Did any of our group here have a chat with Irish Times contributor Siobhan Maguire about her upcoming article on "Watches as an investment"?

She joined at least one of the Irish based watch groups looking for people to talk to. I know Unkel, me and Chris from iChrono left replies to her, if more parishioners from here have too?
    I'm sorry I didn't recognise ye.

The story has now been submitted so I expect to some bit of waffle in the IT business section soon on watches as investments...

I mean it's bad enough to miss the bubble but the I.T also missed the bus on their timing of this one.

it was good you spotted it, I think they rely on folks getting excited about a sale

I once had a sale in eBay for a seamaster and it was addressed to a caravan park in the U.K. and I had my doubts but I posted it off anyway, a few days went by and I could see the buyer signed for it and then up popped a message saying she hadn’t received it and requested a refund

In proof of delivery was her name printed and signature, when I told her this she then made up a cock and bill story about the warden of the park signing for it and left it in the draw in the office ha ha

People try all sorts these days and we really need our heads screwed on when buying or selling anything

    The internet isn’t for everyone

Quick question folks - the Seiko servicing centre in Ballymount…is it also a retail shop you can go in and see / try on watches?

Further to my comments on how this company are approaching escape velocity from solely being a preserve of the homage niche.

Entirely in house design with their own guilloche dial in mother of pearl. While it's not my bag personally hats off to them. It will be a more striking dial than this monochrome photo shows. Having worked with mop there is likely a large portion of spoilage in making these, it's a difficult material.

Would like to see them do likewise in more natural materials.

yes they have a display in the reception. Selection does not appear to be massive, may have more elsewhere

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,904 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

Yeah these watches are seriously impressive. You can’t accuse them of lacking original designs at this point either:

    https://sanmartin-watch.com/products/sn0144cg?srsltid=AfmBOop6m4XvahpZh3POJzMwiv50fySnH9qxgQfcbwRnVv7aPq83MaWv&VariantsId=13563

Seriously tempted to buy the above and get a sense of the quality in hand. Every review raves about the finishing relative to price. And a Miyota Series 9 movement more than acceptable for the price.

It was with some trepidation that I replaced the lume pip on the bezel of a dive watch.

When I ordered the part, I didn't realise that it would be the whole thing that had to come out to put in the new one. The bezel insert is aluminium, so can be tricky to remove without deforming.

Anyway, it all went well, the old one popped out with minimal force and I glued in the new one just to be safe.

Very pleased as the colour match of the main dial lume is excellent.

An amusing way to pass a few minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,071 ✭✭✭Lorddrakul

Fun fact: the high E guitar string from a 12 gauge acoustic set makes excellent source material for a bezel spring clip!

A bit of forming and patience and my Vostok Partner is once again ratcheting securely!

Ingenious fix to a difficult problem!

In a similar buzz… A good tip I learnt on quartz alarm watches missing that wee spring that forms the contact from module to piezo on caseback......break apart a 2mm spring bar and use the spring.

I was going to post this as a reply to @IrishHomer 's Sinn thread but, I thought maybe a few more would see the post here. Not Sinn's but very much Sinn homage from the Chinese brand Steelflier.
A 104, 105 and a passable U1 homage all available for very reasonable money.
They've also got some decent looking efforts at IWC and even an effort at a Grand Seiko elegance GMT.
There is nothing original, or even evolutionary about these designs but if you want to see if perhaps a Sinn is for you without dropping 10 times the money?
    Its not a terrible option.

I've just handled a fake vintage Omega that I think apart from size, would take quite a lot of people in.

Indeed the only reason it didn't pull the wool over my eyes?

Is that I've spent months looking at 50s/60s era Geneva & Constellations when I was looking for the kid's 21st bday present and found out about the fakes via omegaforum.

    The main tell?

Is that Omegas from that era are 34mm & 36mm, very beautiful but small. Omega Jumbo's are 38mm but this one just seems far too fresh to be a 60yo watch IMHO.

This is a 38/39mm watch that looks the part, nice lugs too but size and Observatory on the case back are off.

    1000029351.jpg 1000029352.jpg

Amazing what ya find at a wedding 😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,149 ✭✭✭H_Lime

Did you tell him, lol not sure I'd like to burst a bubble like that at a wedding.

I have no knowledge on the subject but what's wrong with the observatory?

No such concerns with this here, especially once the back was off....

    20250905_111624.jpg 20250905_093500.jpg

He wanted it fixed, I suggested a miyota 8215 but nah, another clone.

    20250905_094051.jpg

For ten quid here it is out of the box

    20250905_102214.jpg

    Surprisingly good lol.

The borders and engraving are off as are the dimensions. A genuine example here for comparison.

    1000029366.jpg

It's also the wrong size for what I think it is, tho that said. I am far from an Omega vintage expert.
Here's what I think it's trying to be.

I didn't tell him today but I'll let him know during the week what I think is off with it.

It's mad the "cottage industry" that has evolved faking vintage watches. Is this a recent fake or a period one do you think. In another hobby I have repaired old objects and had to age the part I made to make it suit wear and patina. Has this been done here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,191 ✭✭✭✭banie01

The dial has has a nice aged look to it and the watch itself looks worn, it doesn't look brand new but it has no real wear on it and the strap it's on is a gorgeous black lizard skin with an omega signed Tang buckle that looks brand new.

I'll meet up with him during the week with a cashback opener to see what's inside. I might find myself very surprised to find an Omega 551 or other 5xx movement. I would bet tho that rather than a vintage 19800 bph movement in there, that it's a 2824 or 2893 clone running at 28800 bph.

It really is a lovely little thing though and I hope he wasn't stung for a market value price for it. Much as goes are a bad thing, I hope he knew what he was buying rather than got caught.

After nearly a dozen years of flawless Eco-Drive ownership, I need a new daily driver. (it got accidentally flung very hard across the room onto a tiled floor, landed on the crown, looked ok, ran a bit slow and when I tried to adjust it the crown came off in my hand)

I can get a Citizen Automatic as cheap or cheaper on Chrono than an Eco-Drive in shops. I like the idea that neither of them ever needs to be opened up for a new battery, compromisting the water tightness.

    (a) Can I be certain that new watches on Chrono are genuine and not Chinese fakes.

    (b) Is it in any way rational to pay more to get a watch that's accurate to +/- 20 sec a day instead of one that's accurate to +/- 20 sec a month? Even if it makes a ticking noise 😊

This is the late lamented Eco-Drive

There are Automatics with the Rolex-style magnifier over the date, which my aged eyes would appreciate 😀 but I've not seen an Eco-Drive with similar.

Any particular style or dial colour you are open to? Just on a braclet? Budget and be aware we'll probably try and double it! Sticking with a Eco Drive I'd suggest a Promaster Tough will take been thrown onto tiles much better!

Really like my one Santa brought me this year, he managed to get it for €270 though! It gets a lot of my wrist time.

I'd favour Seiko over Citizen for automatics, generally prefer their designs. Plenty of nice Seiko 5s for 200 to 300, Prospex for 400- 500 or so if you up the budget. Most King versions of Prospex models have cyclops if you really want them. Personally I'm not a fan I think they look like a carbuncle. I do have one Samurai with date only clylops and I've often considered chipping it off! I do think it's worth spending a bit more, the build quality improves a lot once you get over the 200-300 mark. Bracelets on the Prospex models are significantly better than the 5's.

    Few suggestions.

Lot of variations of these Seiko 5 SRPD's

This GMT variant has a cyclops.

Really like Seiko Save the Ocean Models.

New Samurai's are quite nice, I have two older versions and these are bit slimmer. Will probably pick up one at some stage when I see a good deal. I've never paid anything close to RRP for my seiko's.

Divers take daily wear much better the bezels on them certainly help prevent the crystal getting scratched up. This is coming up on 13 years old now and still gets a lot of wear. While the case and bezel has plenty of dings it wears them well and the crystal in unmarked. Never been opened or serviced either though a trip onto tiled floor off the bathroom sink a few years did affect the accuracy a bit. Runs a bit over a minute a week fast now. Will get it serviced a some point. Be aware it can be a slippery slope I wandered in here by accident 13 years ago and now own 14 watches, actually 15 if you count my garmin!

I think the promaster tough is a bit of an understated modern icon. Monocoque case, sapphire with ar, bulletproof, form follows function and a sprinkle of magic. Sometimes I wish I only had one watch to own because this would probably be it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 41,282 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Thanks Ryath, that is a cool looking diver (shock horror but I think a lot of them look a bit naff). Food for thought there. Stainless steel case and bracelet all the way for me. Think I'll just go with an Eco-Drive again and try to treat it a bit more kindly this time 😉

Plenty of them on Chrono24.de for under €200. This one is 45mm, €150+€12 shipping. Not 100% sold on the green though but there are other colours

    image.png

40mm Promaster is €319+€9, also available in black

    image.png

Can't really go much above that price level at the moment, just had a good bit of work done on the house…

I went with the blue Promaster 😀

I am at serious risk of getting sucked in here, I'm in my 50s and the mortgage is small enough, the other half is earning decent coin again and I already have a 250km/h motorbike 😯 😀 and I've no desire to own a boat!
