Yep I dont get it at all. MDL and Maz have been great signings IMO

He’s been excellent and a very solid starter at the moment. But he’s on €200k a week. Likely to be our highest earner next summer once the lads above leave.

That puts him as a top 5 CB in the league. He needs to be a PFA team of the year player to justify his wage which he isn’t close to.

With PSR performance relative to wage is as important as absolute performance. In American sports you can be among the best player in the world at your position, but still seen as negative value if you’re the highest paid. Football will/has gone that way. It’s just a mindset shift that’s only happened in back office and isn’t evident to most fans.

    Flightradar had it first so.

Any other arrivals scheduled in Manchester today?

Agreed, he had a wobble or two last season but was mostly solid and he has probably been our most consistent performer this season too, certainly the pick of the defenders.

i think we are going to regret picking Lammens over Martinez this season.

Over the course of his contract, maybe that changes as he becomes the keeper the club clearly think he will be.

But this season… Its going to be bumpy.

Bayindir/Onana remaining first choice in the immediate furture I would guess, which is part of my concern on this too.

If Lammens isn't ahead of both of them already we've just wasted time and money. He can't be on the bench.

I think one of those 2 is leaving now, probably to Turkey and he comes in as no 1. Expect to see him start against City because either of the other 2 are bad news.

Ideally a season long loan for Martinez could still be done but if the 2 clowns don't go anywhere, hard to see us paying 4 goalkeepers on our books.

i hope this is the correct choice. he needs to be coming in as #1. would have preferred martinez.

Maybe he surprises us, but definitely a big unknown - step up in class, new country, new teammates, new style of play to get used to and to play against.

Hopefully we get lucky here and he takes to it like a duck to water.

I think we have wasted time and money, based on that.

I think he was targetted as competition for Onana originally - thinking Onana would be 'good enough' this season to give him time and space. But he isn't, and neither is Bayindir.

Maybe he is the best bet we can make long term. I'm not convinved he will make an impact right now.

i'd be SHOCKED if he started vs City.

Lammens only it looks like. 7 hours to get a MF in, not that I have a single hope it will happen.

I'd imagine Bayinder is back out to Turkey but Onana will likely become defacto numner 1 and Lammens to challenge him this season - if he's good enough he will make the job his own in pretty quick time surely.

martinez now in talks with gala, so they wont bail us out by signing onana.

I’d be hopeful on Lammens. Goalkeeper skills can be pretty rigorously tested even in weaker leagues. Lower level teams are well capable of lumping balls into the box and physically crowding a keeper (where our keepers crumble). Average shots might be a slightly lower quality but he still will have faced all types.

It’s not like an outfield position where you are physically matched up 1 to 1 with a different level of opponent which is hard to translate to PL.

The scouting team should have a proper assessment of him. Just hope they’ve got it right

I'd expect to see Onana out the door before Bayindir. Onana seems completely out of favour. He cannot be trusted at all as shown by his performance at Grimsby.

Massively disappointed that we've gone for Lammens over Martinez. A young inexperienced Gk is the last thing we need in that department. I'm not even sure if he'll walk straight into our starting 11. In fact I'll be surprised if he makes his debut against City away whereas if we got Martinez there'd be no doubt he walks straight into the team

to me, lammens is too high risk. martinez would have done a job for 2-4 years and you know what you get.

there are also the intangibles….this team lacks character and fighters. martinez has that. he would also have the personality/reputation to get the respect of the defense right away, and they would push up higher if he is screaming at them to do it.

lets see how it goes i guess.

Not a hope they're going to throw Lammens in against City. That kind of pressure can impact anyone (Patrice Evra anyone) but even more for a keeper where confidence is key.

It'll be Onana for a few weeks at least while Lammens settles in. I'd say Bayindir will go to Turkey this window and if Lammens makes the job his own, Onana might go in January.

This is actually a great example. I’d say MDL and Maz have both been a very solid, ‘good players’ for United. MDL probably slightly better than Mazroui but it’s debatable.

Mazroui PSR hit is €10m per year. MDL is €19m per year.

Therefore the club likely view Mazroui as good to v good signing. MDL an ok to below average signing.

It’s the moneyball stuff that most fans don’t think about.
    1. MDL has been very good for United.
    2. MDL is not performing to a level that justifies his cost.

Both statements can be (and are) true.

Bayindir should not be sold before Onana, who shouldn't even have been named on the bench ahead of Heaton.

Onana should under no circumstances play for the club again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,942 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

even then though you are missing context.

at 19 per year what is that as a % of our budget space, or our squad cost.

I think though you are at a point where you are putting too much emphasis on that cost than is meritted. Too finance focused.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,888 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Why is Onana ahead of Bayindir? The worst of all the keepers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,816 ✭✭✭DataDude

It’s not though. As soon as PSR comes in you’re in a pseudo salary cap league. Absolutely everything becomes about your performance relative to your cost

You essentially evaluate players by looking at

    1. What are other clubs spending on this position. (CBs less than strikers etc)
    2. What does my player in that position cost.
    3. How is my player performing relative to that cost.

MDL is a very good CB. But he’s paid like a bonafide superstar (Van Dijk, Saliba, Gabriel etc.), which he is not.

I promise you this is how every single club looks at it. Unless you are diabolically run. If your mindset is ‘ah sure it’s only x% of the budget’ then you’re done.

Because Bayindir should be relatively easy to ship out to Turkey during their extended transfer window. He's reportedly been trying to engineer a move already due to lack of game time.

Onana has a much higher book value, higher wages, and he's daft enough to think he's still first choice. Much harder to get him out the door than Bayindir.

I'm assuming the thinking is that they're betting one of Lammens or Vitek (apparently performing extremely well on loan in the Championship) will turn out to be really good and will sort out the GK position for a few years.

That's the medium-long term thinking. They are clearly taking quite a big risk in the here and now, though. But it would also have been a risk to sign Martinez for £30m + big wages.

While we definitely need a decent DM signing today, we badly need an experienced striker as well.
