Onana in for Bayindir and that is the team I would go with; though I fear he will go with Casemiro instead of Ugarte, which will be a disaster.

Onana has been training the last week, he will start ahead of Bayindir, I have zero doubt about that.

I'd like us to go Amad at RWB, but I think we will go that little bit more defensive. I think we could 'get away' with Amad though, and I think we will need his offensive threat.

I would be shocked if Sesko, Mbeumo and Cunha didn't start.

I'd start Amad too but I think Dalot will get the nod. Amad coming off the bench really isn't the worst option though if we need to change things. I expect we'll see more effective use of the starters & finishers system RA has spoken about previously.

Bit late to the party but can see us finishing 6th with the current squad.

I hope we don’t have to wait the usual 65-70 minutes before having our first attempt on goal. And I hope we can create a shot on goal independent of Maguire. And I really hope we don’t cough up easy goals due to keeper mistakes.

I guess that would represent improvement.

Im just hoping season is not over before end September which it has been for 80% of time since Fergie left.

But I do think things are looking up for club again. Im much more optimistic for long term future now than I have been in years. Results on field will be bonus.

I expect a challenge for top 4. Anything less is a disappointment again though.

I'm looking forward to this season, seems so far it's our best transfer window in years BUT the obvious glaring hole in the utd midfield has me worried big time. We desperately desperately need that CM

We also need that GK but CM has to take priority for me

    I think he'll go for

    Onana

    Yoro De Ligt Shaw

    Amad Ugarte Mainoo Dorgo

    Mbuemo Bruno

    Cunha

I just can't see him starting Bayindir, he's been more hopeless than Onana and worse (somehow) under crosses and set pieces. I would go with Heaton ahead of Bayindir. Of all positions what match fitness do GK's need.

Sesko, Case, Dalot, Mount, Maz all good options to come off the bench.

Got to be confident for a home game to start us this season, 2-1 to us but with some absolute heartburn moments along the way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,173 ✭✭✭NITRO95

As an exGK, you do need a certain level of fitness to play a full 90. I can't recall off the top of my head what Onanas injury was but if he's been training all week as Mitch said I'd expect he will start

Sesko has to start. You don't pay that much money to sit on the bench. After a solid weeks training he should be ready.

he was also in full pre-season for RB - he trained on his own in the immediate time before signing for us, but that was only a few days. He played in their first two pre-season games, was left out of the last one. Its not like he's done nothing.

I'd be very suprised if he doesn't start. Especially as it is the first game, its not likely everyone else is going to be 100% on point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,935 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

that is the minimum expectation imo.

But I also think you could see 5th to 8th separeted by a couple of points at the end of the season, I think even 4th could be in that unless Chelsea go on a tear (beyond Liverpool, Arsenal and City, Chelsea are the only side with the potential to hit 80+ points, even if I don't think they will). I reckon you will get a bunch of teams very close between 65-72 points or so.

IMO we need to be aiming to hit 65+ points - and see where that leaves us.

I really think Chelsea will flop this year, I don't know why.

I think it's always a little bit pointless for any of us to be making predictions on finishing positions because there's always so much variance in the PL from season to season.

Going into 22/23, expectations for us were low after the Ole/Ragnick disaster season and Liverpool had just come off a season where they were 2 games off winning a quadruple. Yet we finished 3rd and they finished 5th. Literally no pundit predicted this.

Nobody saw City's collapse last season and even though they recovered somewhat, they still haven't gotten back to anywhere near their previous levels.

IMO unless you're at an extremely high standard (City, Arsenal 22/23 and 23/24) then your finishing position can be within a large range of positions and factors outside of your control like injuries will have a really big impact.

It's not fitness per se - it's sharpness.

Need to be facing shots regularly (whether in training or matches isn't as important as for outfield players) so that the instincts and reactions are automatic. Split-seconds make all the difference.

There's a separate question as to whether Onana's instincts and auto-reactions are the right ones - but I think he's provided enough evidence to suggest that when he has to think about things that he's even worse!

They swept PSG aside in the Club World Cup final in fairness to them, even if that was a bit of a novelty competition. If Cole Palmer performs Chelsea will do well but he really dropped off the pace last season

We better not start this game with a light MF. We need Ugarte and Casemiro. Keep it tight and we will create a few chances.

Looking at the various starting 11s and you think that's not bad at all, then you look at the keeper options….two absolute duds. Needs to be addressed asap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,736 ✭✭✭✭JRant

You start Sesko for his heading ability alone, especially defending free kicks and corners against Set Piece FC. We also probably need Casemiro and Maguire for the same reason because outside of set pieces they don't create a lot from open play.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

The exact things many of us have been saying for years. a lack of direction resulting in a poorly fitting squad, capable of moments but not consistency.

He's 100% correct in what he is saying.

What our HOPE is, is that we will have a clear direction under INEOS moving forward - which goes beyond Amorim, or his specific tactics. Last summer with ETH, was a terrible start in that respect.

now we are just waiting to see how we go with Amorim, and as importantly if it doesn't work - where we move to after him and how that impacts the squad we are building right now. If it requires the rebuild to start again, Ineos will have failed.

So a player can go on the piss in Belfast, post leaks from the dressing room and spend a season sauntering around the pitch like he's making coffee on Sunday morning and it's all the club's fault. That's quite the lack of self-awareness there.

You can agree with the message while disagreeing with the messenger. Rashford isn't incorrect in what hes saying in there being a lack of consistency from the club over the past 10 years. However, not longer after INEOS came in and was it Wilcox, Omar and Ashworth had a meeting with Rashford and his big takeaway was I want a new challenge rather than adapt to RAs methods, then you can't blame some people for thinking he is not the guy to be talking about all Utd have done wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,341 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

Rashford is 100% in what he said about the way the club has BEEN run before.

    We all knew that.

But he's out of the club now. There's clearly a new direction. There's new people in roles there that weren't there before.

He needs to focus on himself. He was part of what was wrong before. That's why he's not here. So keep the mouth shut.

not sure what some of ye are smoking re the Arsenal game, they'll control midfield and United will try and hit them on the break, i'd take a draw

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,935 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

That takeaway was also after United had told him he was up for sale in January.

Lets not forget the comments from Rashford came AFTER the stories that he was for sale. They are linked.

And even taking your point…. taking what he said and then responding that 'OH GOING TO BELFAST AND BEING A DICK IS ALL THE CLUBS FAULT YEAH???' is just utterly unhinged.

I wonder did Gary play him this😁

    https://www.skysports.com/football/video/30998/13075367/tackle-him-marcus-rashford-gives-ross-barkley-free-rein

I'd say Barca will get him for free next season and I doubt they will take him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,173 ✭✭✭NITRO95

I wasn't justifying what that person said in response to you. I was preempting what I expect to be a lot of posts taking shots at Rashford based on his behaviours and performances. IncognitoMan put it better, he was part of the problem and now hes gone and the club has moved forward.

I think Rashford should have just continued to keep his mouth closed.
