He doesn't turn 18 until November, but yeah.

At least 17 on the 1st January (1st year out of County Minor) is old enough for Senior Club, league or championship.
At least 18 on 1st January is old enough for Senior County (e.g. Roarty of Donegal).

Diane OHora has confirmed she is applying for the ladies job. That would be a huge appointment for them if she gets it.

Have we an equivalent for the men's team within the county? I just can't see it.

Doesn't mean she'll get the job though. It's Mayo we're talking about. In any case, I don't see it as being a "huge appointment" at all. Have you seen the standard of women's football in the county? Sorry, but that's the reality.

She is an all Ireland winner together with experience at IC level. I can't see how they would not give it to her unless someone else with some significant advantage over her comes in. She has come out and said she wants it….. I can't say the same of the men's job although I was told an ex IC player is the favourite to get it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭Westernview

Thats a very negative take. Course theres no guarantee she'll get the job but she might get it. She would bring about improvements and maybe inspire players to play for the county.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 Pat734

Nothing negative in my comments at all, there's truth in there though and that's the crux of the thing. Do you go to matches in Mayo and elsewhere, standard is terrible and that's the long and short of it. . Can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

so con tel reporting 4 are in for the senior job and 2 are Tony mcantee and Andy with the writer feeling it’s Tony’s to lose.

Did he do much with Sligo over 5 years? Not so sure, Andy hasn’t done much either but is getting slot of credit for the Monaghan transformation this year

Seeing as boards.ie is on it's last legs can someone recommend another place to discuss Mayo GAA ?

I've never been on Hogan Stand or the banter page in my life so I've no idea where to start.

You could try the Mayogaablog.com but there are some on here that think it's the 6th circle of hell. Like anywhere it has a mixed bag of contributors, some very good, some not so. It's fairly strictly policed but I don't think you'd encounter any issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭spakman

gaaboard.com is a decent forum. the number of Mayo contributors has dropped a lot in the last few years, probably because of the mayogaablog, but you get to avoid the lunatic element from the blog

I'm in 2 minds about McEntee but I really can't understand the clamour for Andy. What has he achieved so far in coaching or management? At least Horan had won county club titles as manager and he was regarded as a surprise choice at the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,035 ✭✭✭Panrich

A lot of it might be going for the unknown quantity. He might not be any good but he could be the next Jim Gavin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,004 ✭✭✭HBC08

Andy completely changed his game not once but twice in his career. He had to do this due to circumstances changing ie he switched from a back to a forward and then after ACL changed his style as a forward and won footballer of the year.

Circumstances have changed again now ie new rules. What better man than Andy to make a plan for them.Monaghan were amongst the top scoring 2 point teams (I know they had Beggan but we have a young lad in Breaffy who strikes the ball a lot like Beggan) Are the Monaghan forwards better than ours? They certainly were this year with Andy coaching them.

Great players dont always make great coaches,we won't know with Andy til a few years into it but he has the knowledge, he knows how to pass it on (thats literally his day job) He has the experience of big days,he bleeds red and green, theres a steely side to him too.Crucially he's willing to learn, change and adapt.

I worry about him (or anybody) on a couple of fronts as Mayo manager.Mainly not having a pitch, being hamstrung by the ineptitude of the CB and that toxic clown on twitter, plus a few other gobsh1tes in the media.

Its all part and parcel of it and I don't know if I'd prefer him as manager or coach.....

But for me anyway Andy is the man.

Id agree with most of that. However the fact that there are still at least 5 players in the squad that he played with means he would be compromised from day 1. I'd rather he waited until they had left the scene and maybe gain more experience in the meantime.

One thing I don't agree with is calling current CB members incompetent. They are effectively amateurs operating in a voluntary role and doing a job that few would take on. A full time paid executive would be preferable of course but that isn't possible given the huge debt build up by a previous board.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,004 ✭✭✭HBC08

To be more clear I was more so alluding to the complete ineptitude of previous county boards, especially the millstone of the debt which is the single biggest obstacle to Mayo winning Sam.

However that situation came about when amateurs made decisions they werent qualified to make. We have the same situation now,the calamities arent likely to be on the same scale but you get my point.

like you and the likes of James horan and anybody with half a brain we need paid professionals to manage the thing.Of course its a catch 22,we cant afford it because of previous boards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭Westernview

That's fair enough. Its just i see a lot of silly comments these days about clearing out the county board but of course the same people have no plan as to how or who replaces them. Yes the board who were present when the stand was built are the real problem. The current board are left dealing with the mess.

I think McEntee credentials are superier to Andys. He has more experence, won more at the highest level. I am not sure about Andy tbh. Leitrim was a disaster, new york beat them and then Monaghan sang his praises. Has he the cutting edge to him to do the necessary….. There are two many question marks over him if I am been honest. Brilliant footballer but we need a right bastard of a manager in the same vein as O'Connor, McGuinness and even Horan V1.0. Andy is a people pleaser and more in the vein of McStay than say Horan. I think it is too early for Andy to take the reigns.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,813 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

First round of the championship this weekend. Tight one for Knockmore in Balla but as ever if we can't beat Balla we're going nowhere.

Garrymore v Cross should be interesting to see where Cross are. Ballagh v Claremorris another interesting one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭Westernview

I think the same. Andy comes across as being everyone's best friend. I could see an initial bounce and the squad energised with his positivity but then when hard decisions have to be made come championship....

Squad morale depends on everyone feeling equal and no favourites or cliques with the manager. No one undroppable. If Andy can't promise that he may as well not apply or wait until next time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭Audioslaven

100%… The problem is and this could possibly happen, is that they go … Andy was a great player for us, he is mayo true and true, brilliant footballer, POTY etc. This is all good, but we need the best manager we can find. The hard facts are who have you managed, what success did you bring, what regime did you bring in to enabled that success and delve into the true person to understand that this guy will do the necessary, even if it is an unpopular opinion, who is in your management team, their roles, skills, what everyone brings to the table etc. We need to get the right person and not let emotion be part of the decision making process.

Mcentee as manager with Andy as coach? How would people feel about that ticket.

No idea if that would happen but this is an online forum so what else is it for but soeculating

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭muddle84

Why do you think Andy is a good enough coach? I know Monaghan did well forwards wise this year, but Monaghan have always had good forwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,035 ✭✭✭Panrich

He has a lot more on his CV than Donaghy had when McGeeney took him into the Armagh setup.

Andy now the favourite according to the Indo with Boyler also on the ticket.

I'd be happy with this,Boyle has been working with the young lads the last couple of years.
