I hope the new management do well. Andy and Boyler will bring a lot of energy and get the players very motivated. The fact they are from near county borders will add extra edge to games against Roacommon and Galway.

Based on media performances I think Boyler will be the brains of the operation. Without him I'd have concerns about Andy and Tally together.

How we adapt to the new rules will be interesting. Tally has been very defensive up to now and Boyle was a ball carrier so will we get more direct football and more kick passing? Hard to know. As a former forward himself, Andy might demand early ball.

4 or 5 new players will be needed. A big challenge.

In fairness you are usually wrong so no worries on that front.

Andy and Boyler will be all about youth, can't wait to see the squad for the league.Livingstone,Meheady,Ivors,McMonagle,a lot of other young lads will be brought in.Havent been this excited about Mayo squad and management in a good few years. Was on the fence about renewing my season tickets, delighted to do that now

I don't have the time or inclination but a quick trawl back of your negative posts over the years would make for some amusing reading.

At the end of the day, Moran calls the shots not Boyle. Boyle may know the development squads well but I am afraid that there could be an allegiance to senior players and in turn we get a situation of the same outcomes. I am not talking about building a team for Connaught titles but building a team to challenge for SAM. We have three guys who are in a different pot now. I would love to see a move like Horan did in his first stent. That gave everyone a clear message and set the tone for the years ahead.

Look, I hope this is not the case and lets see where they take us. I would write off the first year just to see new faces and a bit of steel to them. We have gone as soft as butter, need to get up to speed with the new rules and find new leaders. It is a big ask, so I hope they do it.

Delighted you get pleasure, knock yourself out. Also keep chewing those happy pills!!

Finding new leaders will be critical, even if it means playing players will less technical ability but who will die for the cause. Colm Boyle types actually.

If we are relying on starting slower older players for leadership purposes we are going nowhere. The 3 year process starts now.

Do people think it'd be a good idea to bring Cillian back?

There are pros and cons to it but on balance, I think it would be a positive. He's a 2 point threat, he's a massive leader and with the 3 up rule, he'd have less running to do.

The main downside for me would be that Andy might not be strong enough to drop him if it came to that and if that was the case, it'd completely undermine the management team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,819 ✭✭✭Westernview

I'd have him on the bench. A 2 point threat as you say. I get the feeling he wouldnt like too much bench time though so it would depend on that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭Avon8

    Maheady? Really?

Aside from that, outside view would be Mayo done about as well as possible from the very limited pool of options available at the moment. Tally is a top 5 coach in the country without doubt, for all that certain segments seem to have an agenda against him. He's a coup, no question

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭muddle84

Time to start looking forward imo. How do we start building new leaders if we keep hanging on to the old ones?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,010 ✭✭✭HBC08

There's a few obvious lads that'll be called up and Maheady is in that group.Brilliant all league and 9 points in his first ever championship game at the weekend.

I agree with you, there was also an obvious choice for manager and we've managed to get that sorted (along with a very strong backroom team) without much fuss or drama which is a positive thing.

Its a no brainer for me.

it's playing brilliantly for Ballintubber, the knowledge he could bring to all the new lads coming in is invaluable. I wouldn't be starting him but what a man to bring on aswell.

A few of them young Belmullet lads are hardy bucks. I watched Belmullet v Knockmore in the League and the young full back gave aidan orme his fill of it when he tried to throw his weight around.

You are on the money. Time to move on. Take Donegal, Murphy looked his age in the final. It also speaks volume on the panel, if an older retired player comes back. Granted he played well throughout the year but you need to carry the ball with these older guys as they don't have the legs or pace for direct ball inside. This would be more evident with COC as he was always inside where as Murphy floated out and got on ball. He would also be marked by fast young defenders. I just can't see it as progression and looking for new leaders. Anyway, they had their time, didn't get over the line in their prime and now hand over the batton to a new crew. I think COC has left a memory of a top top forward in peoples head…. leave it that way, the same as Keegan did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭muddle84

Exactly that! COC and co gave us the best days watching them play at their prime. But that time is over.

I keep thinking back to Gilroy coming into Dublin and dropping Jason Sherlock, I wonder would they have kicked on in 2011 if he hadn't. He was holding the team back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,813 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Evan regan scored 2-9 in a little over a half of football at the weekend, four 2 pointer frees

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭muddle84

Surely you're not suggesting that he should be pulled back into the Mayo squad?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,043 ✭✭✭Panrich

I expect Andy to cast the net wide for talent and with Boyle on board, I’d hope to see some joined up thinking between senior and the underage setup.

It won’t be an easy fix though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,819 ✭✭✭Westernview

I wouldn't look at Regan, Carr, McDonagh, Orme or OHora again. None of them are county standard after getting plenty of opportunities.

Even Cillian is touch and go at this stage but he is a proven top level forward.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 707 ✭✭✭eastie17

if any other county had the highest scorer in the history of the game playing well for his club in the senior championship what do you think they’d do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,819 ✭✭✭Westernview

Its not that simple. If he was younger and unlikely to get injured of course they'd take him back. Playing well at club level doesn't prove a player will be effective at county level. He would have to show the new management that he can still do it. If not then it's time to move on. And that's all based on him wanting to come back as well.

the question asked was “should he be asked back”. It’s not even a question based on what I said above.

Wether he’s up to it and has the required motivation are of course other questions that can only be answered by him being back in the setup.

No one is saying, least of all himself I’m sure that he just walks back in, but it would be daft given his record and abilities not to at least see what he can offer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,819 ✭✭✭Westernview

That's fair enough but your comment seemed to suggest that he should be brought back regardless of the pros and cons mentioned. I think it's important that he would agree his role with Andy before that. Otherwise there could be potential conflict down the line. Anyway I think most of is agree that a fit Cillian would be an asset if he could be used effectively.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,813 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Agreeing his role was how he fell out with McStay, McStay told him he'd be an impact sub last September. Hard to get motivated if you know the best you can do is 20 minutes off the bench.

The message should be that he has to work hard to get back on the starting 15 but that nothing is decided and if Andy thinks its best for the team he'll start. Then its back on the player to prove himself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,819 ✭✭✭Westernview

I'm not sure if 20mins was specified in that agreement. I'm sure McStay only said a bench role.

Yes he will have to prove himself like everyone else. Theres no way any manager can guarantee any player a starting spot even though under Horan one or 2 players appeared undroppable. If Andy followed that route he will already have undermined the squad.

The same Michael Murphy that was named on the team of the year. Highly likely to pick up another All-Star. The player that many folks were praising for getting an over-achieving Donegal to the final. The entire Donegal team were swept aside easily enough in the final by Kerry. It's an easy scape goat to target Murphy as being "past it". When in fact for the previous 10 matches or so, he was making huge contributions to Donegal's wins.

If Cillian O'Connor could come back and make similar contributions to Mayos cause next year, I'd be laying out the red carpet for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭Audioslaven

Did you watch the final..Donegal could not drive a ball into him as he would not win it. This will not win all Irelands… that’s what counts not team of the year or all stars or player of the year… its all Irelands we need. We have seen it numerous times in finals weaknesses exposed that were there at different times during a season. You cannot afford any weakness as we already know over the years. At the end of the day it’s Moran’s call and if COC wants back. He is a different player to Murphy as well. If he rocks us to an all Ireland, I would love it but I just can’t see it at his age. I would hate to see some corner back from Kerry or Galway clean him. Leave his Mayo legacy in place. That’s the way I want to view him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭Avon8

It'd think there's close to zero chance he drafts in Maheady. There's already enough scandal constantly around Mayo without bringing that upon yourself in your first couple of months in the job. That outside of any moral issues he or the dozens of other people involved may have. He wasn't in the u20 squads either I believe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,223 ✭✭✭FullBack Jam

You're way off the mark if you think there is an All Ireland in this current Mayo team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,819 ✭✭✭Westernview

Some good stuff from Andy and Colm in the press conference and initial interviews. No pointless declarations about winning anything. Just a grounded focus on getting a motivated team who will leave everything on the field. 2 pointer forwards are very much on their radar on the club scene.

Conor finn back in for S and C is positive and Andy has already spoken to Cillian about a return. Reading between the lines it sounds like he will be back.

Interesting to hear him mention about having players based in Mayo to gain necessary inches and assisting them with that. Not sure how much can realistically done to get lads jobs in Mayo but it would cut down the 18 hrs per week in a car that he referenced.

Didn't seem too bothered about managing former team mates but time will tell on that one.

Yeah, I thought they were good alright. Nice touch to mention John O'Mahoney also I thought

As you say, managing former team mates and potentially making hard calls there might be the making or breaking of them
