Robbie Brennan seems like a good manager, (even if that Kilmacud Crokes team was fairly star studded), in that he has at least got Meath looking more like a team than a bunch of individuals.

If there was one team I thought under these new rules someone would be keen to manage it was Meath.Especially when they were at such a low ebb.

They are like that saying on fashion that no matter what the item of clothing, if you hold on to it long enough it will come back into fashion. Meath at club and county level never changed their style of football. They always played at county senior level with a lot of big strong players around the middle, played catch and kick, long balls into their forwards, shot from distance, and that is basically what is needed under the new rules to be competative.

The rules have come back around to suit Meath.

Ardnaree Sarsfields are proud to announce that former Mayo football star and Irish basketball legend Liam McHale has officially joined the management team of our senior squad for this season.

A dual-sport icon with a remarkable career at both inter-county and international levels, Liam brings with him a wealth of experience, leadership, and a deep understanding of elite-level performance. His presence is a massive boost to our club, and we are thrilled to welcome someone of his calibre and passion for sport into the fold.

We look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on our club.

    Pl

McConville staying with Wicklow it seems....not sure if he was ever a realistic option for Mayo tbh 🤔

Case to be made that Meath have adjusted best to the new rules. They kick the ball the most of the final four.

Has been a mixed/odd year for Meath, in the league got themselves into a great position for promotion but fell away as Monaghan,Roscommon gained promotion instead of them.

Grabbed the headlines in Leinster by beating Dublin, were expected to win the final but lost to Louth. In the Group stage got over the line in a poor quality game against Cork, lucky enough to come away with a draw against Roscommon. Then Grabbed the headlines again by beating Kerry to top their group, unlike the Leinster championship they backed up that win by taking out Galway. Will be interesting to see how they fare this weekend against Donegal who have a very different style which is mainly playing the ball through the hands. Fitness and conditioning will be telling factor this weekend in the warm weather forecasted.

For me it`s more a case of the new rules going back to the style of football that Meath won All Ireland`s playing and a style they never changed from at club level. They totally blew the Leinster Final, but had probably over celebrated beating Dublin and then under estimated Louth.

I have said here before, if you want to re-build a team for championship, Div 2 is the place to do it as you can experiment much easier there and do so out of the glare of headlights. I suspect their falling away in Div 2 was much to do with them eyeing the championship with Dublin sliping back somewhat.

The blip in Leinster may have been their blessing in disguise if Leinster was their main aim as they got their act back together quickly, toping their group beating Kerry and then took out Galway. They may not win an All Ireland this year, but they are a coming team.

The fitness and conditioning of Donegal is what you would expect from a McGuinness managed team, but Meath do not seem lacking in that area either, and may not need to be at the same level as Donegal as they kick long rather than run the ball. Donegal will need to be very careful running the ball through hands and getting turned over. With Meath`s kicking game they could easily get caught out at the back. I heard on the radio today that both Meath and Tyrone were complete underdogs. While I cannot see Tyrone beating Kerry, I wouldn`t class Meath anywhere close to being underdogs to that extent.

That slightly ignores the evolution they've gone through as the year has progressed. I'd be giving Brennan a lot more credit than is suggested there.

Early on they were one of the main proponents of the +1 from the 3/3, bringing up Billy Hogan to be an extra man at every opportunity. Their success with the tactic (especially when down a player to a black card) playing a relatively sizeable role in a couple of the rule tweaks we've seen this year. Including the change to 4/3 that fairly rocked them tactically. No shock that their 'dip' in form at the end of the league coincided with the time when the main pillar they'd built their attacking setup on had just been removed from the game.

It took time for them to add the various other strings to the bow we're seeing them benefit from now. There's very little nuance to their old defensive system under O'Rourke and what Brennan has them playing now (they've currently conceded the least per game of any side left in the Championship, just 19 points on average). While their transition game and attacking movement has notched up a number of levels from even the early league wins as Brennan has dramatically increased the confidence, belief and work-rate around the squad as well as their movement and execution of the skills.

It's not just the rule changes, it's the execution of it all. Put Robbie over that side last year and they'd have been levels ahead of where they were then too. He's making a real impact.

No coach, no matter how good he is, will make a team competative at All Ireland Senior Championship level unless the players available to him have the skill sets required.

Brennan is a good coach, he has them well organised, motivated and at a high fitness level. Where he and Meath are blessed is that Meath at county and club level have always played the brand of football that is now required to be successful under the new rules.

was that information really revolutionary? forwards should score. quick lets rewrite the books

The mixed year and results for Meath continued right up to their final game. Fitness and conditioning was on a different level for Donegal today as was their physicality. Now in hindsight the through the hands style has proved to be more of success than kick passing especially when you are as extremely fit as Donegal are to make it a success.

Meath definitely have a lot of ground to make up in terms of conditioning. I noticed that the legs were gone early enough in the 2nd half.

I think the new rules have given teams options in terms of how they mix it up rather than moving it through the hands beings the best way. Kerry kick more so it will be a nice contrast in styles for the final.

Donegal`s fitness level may be at a better level than Meath`s, but I wouldn`t say that applies to their physicality. Meath are quite a big strong physical team, especially around the middle, which with the new rules can be an advantage if you can won ball cleanly there. Donegal negated that by breaking anything in that area and moping it up. It was working so well for them that even when Conor Gray went in to replace Brian Menton they didn`t send in Jason McGee

Long kick passing can work in that you can transition quickly from defense to attack, but you need players free to kick too. If you haven`t then you are kicking a 50/50 ball to a marked player with his back to goals. Donegal increase that percentage in their favour by carrying the ball out of defense at speed, with their 3 up forwards most often just pulling their defenders wide to open up the center with any of those players coming through able to kick a score.

Rumour mill ratcheting up this evening. Donaghy has left Armagh setup and there are unconfirmed reports that he was seen in castlebar last night.

If so, then obviously a rumer that someone started up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭muddle84

Sure this is how its going to be for the next while until they appoint somebody!!!!

I really can't see Donaghy taking on Mayo! But who knows!

While I think Donaghy would be decent, I'd say he'd (understandably) be out the gap the minute the kerry job becomes available so for that reason he wouldn't be my first choice

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, that he won't be committing to anything until the AI Final is done and how that goes!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,498 ✭✭✭tanko

He started of in Derry, then Louth, Cavan around lunch time, on to Mayo and finished up in Galway

Good highlights reel from the D1 league final. If Jack Livingston can continue scoring like that, he's worth a look with the county team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,813 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

With Reape taking a year out he must be favourite

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭muddle84

Is this a rumour or was it announced anywhere?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,813 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Well he hasn't taken out an ad in the western but hes taking a year out. AFAIK it's common knowledge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭muddle84

First I heard of it, so I'm not sure its common knowledge at all, maybe it is in the north of the county.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,440 ✭✭✭naughto

Taking a Yr out with a new manager being appointed shortly is madness what's to say he will get a look in with the new manager he should hold tight until Maughan I mean new manager takes up his position an see where he is then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 Pat734

Kevin Walsh and Andy Moran working together is being actively pursued. Walsh is game for it, but Andy wants total control. In fairness Moran is untested in a managerial role and doesn't come across as being tough enough. Mayo want and need a tough man on the sideline who can also read a game. There's fcek all of them around. I've a feeling we'll end up with a good club manager and that's about it. They're the ones that will put their names in for the job. Anyone worth their salt has no intention of applying for the job, Mayo should be chasing that person.

Is today not the closing date for applications?? I have to say, I'm both surprised and shocked that there hasn't been any rumours worth talking about or any leaks from the process so far! If today is the closing date though, and if history is anything to go by, I'd say the names will be out before the weekend is over…….
