Focusing or retreating to where you make the most profit is a great strategy in the short term but leaves them wide open to competition with nowhere to else to go. The current short haul strategy means they can't compete with the European legacies on product, loyalty or frequency, and can't compete with Ryanair on cost.

The summer sun market is big enough for two major carriers, a third would likely devestate Aer Lingus. Even then, any new summer routes Aer Lingus attempt, Ryanair quickly replicates.

Returning to Central and Eastern Europe or Scandinavia in their current form would obviously be a disaster but the fact they couldn't make these routes work or felt the need to retreat to reliable markets proves there's an underlying issue with the business that needs to be adressed or they'll eventually face them again in the remaining markets they've become reliant on.

Fleet, product and brand position all need attention in Europe. Unfortunately IAG only wants to see the bottom line, they'll never want to invest in Aer Lingus short haul enough to see the significant change needed imo. The drip feed of A320neo's, just 8 in 5 years and almost exclusively for Heathrow, speaks for itself.

And yet LOT didn’t last on WAW-DUB with either the E190 / 737. Ryanair is extremely aggressive on flights to Eastern Europe and will just drop prices to run away competition the same as they did with Wizz out of Cork.

I'd imagine it's partly to put football fans from countries they don't want visitors from off going to the World Cup.

The NEO's are focused on LHR for two good reasons

    1. More seats, its a busy route and EI has cut back some rotations but maintained seat count as a result
    2. LHR is expensive to operate from, considerable discounts are offered for flying the NEO over the CEO

I know why they're there, that's my point. IAG needed a particularly strong business case (LHR savings) from Aer Lingus to invest in those aircraft but getting more of them for the wider European network looks set to be a slower process compared to other group carriers.

I'm in no hurry to see more NEOs in the fleet given how uncomfortable the seats are.

    100% agree.

A neighbour flew back from Izmir recently. He said his kids were happy with the charging ports, while he was unhappy with the lack of recline for 4 hours!!

So far, Ive only experienced the A320neo across to LHR.

I avoid flights that have the neo, anything over an hour leaves me with a sore back.

Can anyone explain the rationale that EI don't offer through-connections to the European network from Donegal. If originating in CFN you can book to the US but not Europe. Seems like a missed opportunity (but unsurprising when EI is involved!). Likely due to PSO restrictions I guess, to stop it being used for holidays and to leave the seats for those needing it for commuting/regional use.

The flights are nowhere near busy enough for that to be a concern, and plenty of other PSO services (across Europe and not just aviation ones) exist extensively for tourism purposes.

I think its just that they have no systems in place for intra short haul network transfers of any kind.

Also the PSO contract is held by Emerald Airlines, not Aer Lingus. I assume they did not tender on the basis of being a franchisee, though the public statements at the time did highlight the onward connectivity opportunities.

Looks like EI-GAJ went tech in LAX last night. My brother was supposed to be on it, coming home for a friend's wedding on Friday morning.

Aer Lingus flat out refused to rebook him on anything other than a day later (missing the wedding) so he's just booked an alternative on lastminute.com and will make a brave attempt to get things back from travel insurance.

Aer Lingus would be the first port of call to pay for the rebooking. They do the approach of refusing to look for seats on other carriers a lot, but are still liable for the costs under 261

I didn't realise that it was Emerald held. It's not branded or marketed as Emerald, you don't book it on an Emerald website, it's now seen as another EI route. Surely they must have had agreement to operate it as a franchise/brand in advance, would you think.

Edit: they do say on that statement that it will be operated as EI regional. However they also say: and seamless connections with the Aer Lingus network from Dublin with a record number of seats.  Not only will this be a huge boost for travel between Donegal and Dublin but it will also re-establish vital tourism connections to Donegal on the wider Aer Lingus network.

It hasn't operated under the actual tender holders brand for a long time, except the pandemic era Amapolaflyg era

It's been sold as Aer Lingus with both Stobart and Emerald; Flybe with Loganair. Loganair also ran other Irish PSOs as BA before then

Aer Arann pre 2012 was the last time it was consistently branded by the actual tender holders.

Yes that's correct. I think you replied while I was editing. I've no problem with that, I think it's better for the route to be part of a bigger network. I just think it would be an even stronger offering if connections were possible.

Sounds like a software limitation that is only designed to enable Europe-USA connections and it's not worth the money to modify it for just a single route to do Europe-Europe connections.

XLU spotted at XFW again. Flight testing should be underway shortly. It won’t be long now until all 6 XLR’s are on hand with XLW also preparing for tests.

Noticed it's still on the ground in LAX today. Wonder what happened to it…

Anyone know what happened the Aer Lingus flight to Lanzarote today? Seen it turned back off the south coast of Cork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,389 ✭✭✭EchoIndia

You did not specify which flight or from which airport, but from a search on FR24 it looks like you meant EI778. A replacement aircraft is now en route DUB-ACE as EIN77C.

Can’t remember where I saw but someone said it was an engine issue

Dublin to Cleveland diverted to Pittsburgh yesterday. Was it for a splash and dash or something else

Weather related I imagine, fairly meaty storm ripped through the midwest yesterday during the day.

The 12th July episode of BBC's Casualty opened with an overhead shot of some parked up aircraft (supposedly due to some passenger coming in with a weird deadly virus), I wonder what airline they borrowed these two from?

I spotted that the other day while channel surfing. It's St. Athan, south Wales. These two (among many others) were lined up for the scrap yard at the E-Cube facility there, they are now 'no more'. A little odd seeing EI-CVB's fuselage being ripped asunder by a mechanical grabber/cutter.
