This doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. I requested a cancellation of my order with a full refund just now.

    Quick AI summary:

    Implications:

    • Past Debt to an Insolvent Company: Rathwood had a significant outstanding debt to Mercer Agencies Limited when Mercer Agencies went into administration in November 2024.

    • Potential Legal Proceedings: The administrators of Mercer Agencies were considering legal proceedings to recover this debt, indicating that a repayment plan had not been definitively secured at the time of that judgment.

    • Impact on Rathwood's Financial Position: A debt of nearly £1.5 million is substantial for any company. While Rathwood's overall financial health (as reported in their 2023 accounts with €22.9M turnover and €5.8M net assets) might suggest they could absorb such a debt, the fact that legal action was being considered by the administrators of Mercer Agencies indicates it was a contentious issue or a significant liability for Rathwood at that time.

    • Timing: The Mercer Agencies administration was in November 2024. Rathwood's latest accounts filed are for December 2023. This means the debt to Mercer Agencies would likely be reflected in their next set of accounts (due by September 2025, for the year ending December 2024) if it hadn't been fully resolved by then.

    AND

The document states that "At the time of administration Rath-Wood owed the Company £1,499,399.17." It also mentions that the administrators of Mercer Agencies "felt it may become necessary to bring proceedings for recovery of the debt" because efforts to secure a repayment plan had been made.

This indicates that, at the time the document was written (related to the administration in November 2024 and the judgment delivered in May 2025), Rathwood had not fully paid the debt to Mercer Agencies, and there was an ongoing effort by Mercer's administrators to recover the money, potentially through legal action. It doesn't definitively state that Rathwood refused to pay, but rather that the debt was outstanding and its recovery was a concern for the administrators.

To be fair we have no idea of the financial state of the company as per my post.

But that doesn't detract from the current issues being reported.

Yeah I have looked for bargains elsewhere and followed this thread for deals on firewood in other places but I always end up going back to Monaghans, it is not the cheapest by no means but you get what you pay for, their wood is excellent.

I finally got a refund from Rathwood today for 2 separate orders. I did in fact report them to the CCPC, but I advised Rathwood of this yesterday. That seemed to trigger a reaction. If you're looking for a line to use, then quote this to them " Please be advised that I have reported Rathwood to the Competition & Consumer Protection commission for breach of EU law under Directive 2011/83/EU on Consumer Rights for failure to refund within 14 days of order cancellation".

And if you do want to see the financial position of the company, you can get their accounts for a small fee at www.cro.ie. Their company name is Rath-Wood Home & Garden World Limited

Yeah I requested refund 3 weeks ago. They responded and promised but no refund came. After 2 weeks I asked again and another promised. I paid via revolution credit card so started process of credit card payment reversal todayb using all the evidence I have. Thanks for suggestion re ccpc tho, that's a good idea.

I did get 25x bags of ash from Boyles and it came in just 2 days

I got my refund in about 18 days and will assume it was involvement by Revolute and possibly the CCPC that helped me. Be aware the CCPC do not act on individual complaints and Revolute can take up to 90 days to refund you. I found it very disappointing that we have no real protection when EU Law is broken and Rathwoods own T&Cs of refunds made within 14 days does not happen. Revolute at least did get back to me and escalated my issue but I never got any correspondence from the CCPC. I have another two orders that will most likely have to ask for refunds, and I'm not looking forward to that.

Glad to hear you got your first refund back. I know it may feel like "we have no real protection when EU Law is broken", but this is not actually the case.

If paid by credit or debit card, obviously requesting a chargeback with your bank if the first line of defence. But if you are outside of the claiming period or if you paid directly with cash and purchase was less than €2,000, you can lodge online a small claims with the courts for €25.

Ive used it before as a last resort. Once lodged, the other party (the respondent) will get a notification. More often this is enough to get them to settle the issue as they do not want to waste time & resources getting caught up in proceedings, especially since Consumer Law is very strong and they will most likely lose in any event.

Remember you are relying on your statutory rights under Consumer Law - forget about any nonsense T&Cs that Rathwood may have as they can not contract of their legal obligations to you as a Consumer.

Whilst it sounds daunting, its a very easy, straight forward process and there is plenty of guidance online.

    Good luck with it all.

I'm pretty sure there's far more protection with Credit Card.

If spending a significant sum on anything it's wise to use one rather than a debit card.

I checked the portal today to find, as expected, my delivery date for my order placed on 01/01/2025 is now due into stock on 18/09/2025 and not 18/08/2025. I will cancel this order and another one I have. I think it is unwise for anyone to order from Rathwood until it returns to having actual goods in stock. No advanced orders or Wait and Save.

A classic case of "you get what you pay for".

In this case, wait and save equals a rubbish service.
