Cut some this afternoon in south tipp..chances of.showers a couple of days but tiny amounts and might get.lucky

12acres or so..its light enough and on a hill and usually comes quick once there is.a breeze

Chance of light rain tomorrow then light cloud with a moderate breeze for next week till Friday again. I'm going out to grease the mower now.

Huge amount of lads with hay on the ground around me here at the minute. Minute the sun shines on it they are battering it with tedders then a,shower comes alone and stops play.

Ill never get alot lads fear of haylage.Might cost 6-7 euro per bale more but will be less bales per acre than hay as the baler density can be turned right up,feed value will be better than hay that was rained on and bet up and down a field for 10 days, and no shed needed

The reality is we're forgetting about getting any more hay. We reared 109 bales last month so I was happy with that as it will be fed to the pre calving sucklers. Anyway, it pissed rain here today and the grass is starting to lye down. We will mow either Monday or Tuesday - weather dependent - spread it out to dry a bit (if possible) bale and wrap.

Very dirty day today alright but all the signs are still there for a very good spell of weather from the 12th July onwards so I'd say most will wait the extra few days and go flat out then for Hay

well I cut today anyway. Will make hay or Haylage out of it depending on weather. Blew up a fantastic day. Powerful drying wind.
two other neighbours did the same

Yeah today has turned out savage alright so actually tempted to cut a bit myself as both Carlow and Donegal Weather are giving a fairly dry week and warming up it goes.

Cathal Nolan is saying the following week will be very good but MT Cramium is saying it will be unsettled so very hard to know what to do 🤷‍♂️

Will this coming week or the following week be better for Hay ?

yea it’s hard to know but MT seemed to indicate potential thunderstorm with the heat the following week. .

I cut Yesterday, I knew the rain was promised, but I'd rather it gets the rain a few hours after cutting than a few hours before bailing. Powerful drying this afternoon, strong breeze which is fantastic. I don't think we are in for clear blue skies over the next few days, but as long as it stays dry then I think we are in Business.

Cut Thursday night. Like above, knew the rain was coming.

Gone though it just now with tedder and it's flying it. Should be ready by Tuesday if this windy weather keeps up.

1mm of rain in the models for the week ahead so hopefully will get it.

    Cirrocumulus clouds in wexford atm.

A sign of hot weather on the way. And that's without even looking at the weather charts which have it a good week.

    Southeast obvs the driest chance.

weather looking very good for the back end of this week now.

I never understand the fascination of going in straight away or after a shower tedding ir a hay bob. Leave it in rows for 3-4 days. Let it save in rows. That way showers do ot no damage. Cutting with a mower conditioner or using a wuffler straight after the disc mower.

You either gettge weather or not. Agree on haylage it's not that much extra in plastic and wrapping as you can chop and make very dense bales

The reason for tedding out soon enough after cutting is to expose more of the crop to the wind and sun if its out.

Leaving it in rows makes no sense when trying for Hay imho unless it's spread out very flat with the mower.

Better to get it tedded out asap and then let it save for the 2-3 days if ya want before tedding again.

I'd say the mower would have a lot to do with it. I used to always spread it out soon after cutting with a drum mower. Since I got a disc mower I can get away with leaving it as it makes a wider flatter raheen after cutting.

Looking like a decent window from today on for hay if anyone is planning on making any.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,666 ✭✭✭Dunedin

I’ll never understand your fascination in cutting hay in the rain.

Ffs there might only be a 4-5 day window for hay so it sure as hell ain’t going to save sitting in rows.

With this weeks forecast, and the high temperatures Saturday and Sunday.

How many days and turns would it need to be fit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,541 ✭✭✭Tileman

it’s like growing trees . The best time to cut was last Saturday. But I’d u havnt it done. The next best time is this morning.
turn every day and you should get it by Saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,704 ✭✭✭Sami23

I cut mine yesterday and was thinking of turning today, skip tomorrow and then once a day until fit which I hope will be about Saturday all going well but looking forward to hearing other people's opinions on how many times to turn it

Thinking of trying for haylage as don't have sheds for hay

How many turns and how many days would I need to leave it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 675 ✭✭✭k mac

Have ground in acres that could not cut before 01st july about 8 acres, did not get grazed at all and has got no slurry or fertiliser gone too strong for grazing and silage qualiity would be terrible i'd say so was thinking of making hay. Heavy enough in spots some rushes in it so i presume it would be ok hay. Problem i have no machinery for shaking out or rowing up, if i got it mowed tomorrow its promised good until sunday, how many times would i need to get it turned, and how much would it cost is it by acre or by the hour. trying to figure out is it worth my while by the time i pay for mowing, turning baling…hoping to sell bales off the field and probably get no more than 30 euro a bale. Might be as far on try and sell the meadow and let someone else with the machinery do it and charge so much per bale

if you were to do hay or haylage you will be losing money at 30e a bale. by the sounds of it you would need to get it turned every day. even if it is rough stuff, bedding value would be there

    good guide on pricing here:

    https://www.agriland.ie/farming-news/what-are-the-2025-fci-guide-prices-for-contractor-charges/

if you don't want the hassle let it off to someone else but then you need to worry about getting paid and how quickly can you get someone and what will they pay
