That junction is a nightmare from personal experience, however I am not sure how infrastructure related it is. I think part of it is the pedestrian cycle is poorly timed, but the main problem is just the drivers.

Drivers regularly speed on every direction through that junction, and the left turn onto Dean street is something that still terrifies me. That left turn is dangerous because not only are drivers coming in hot when they make it, its a blind corner for pedestrians so we can't really see people until its too late. To make it even worse people regularly ignore the red left turn signal to make the turn and I have nearly been hit by many drivers doing that.

It's just too wide. There shouldn't be what's essentially a dual-carriageway interchange right in the middle of a city centre. I guess it's a relic of the cross-city motorway that never got finished. That left turn signal onto Dean Street should be changed: it's too counter-intuitive and I doubt that the drivers who regularly break the red-for-left light realise what they're doing.

I'd have to agree here. The Clanbrassil St left turn filter block onto Dean St is routinely ignored and since the only solution is a full red all ways to decrease pedestrian risk it'll have to happen.

Install a red light enforcement camera at that junction to catch cars making a left turn from New St onto Dean St against the red, and those who continue onto Dean St from Kevin Street well after the lights have gone red for them.

Most people would learn after they get a fine….

That’s a basic hurdle that our politicians have not crossed yet, even in principle.

The new L14 timetable has finally appeared on bustimes.

For some reason it appears to only have a stop at Cherrywood Luas on the way to Bray, I hope that's just a mistake with the scheduling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭p_haugh

Unless it's changed recently, the opposite stop was still blocked off with construction fencing as of a few months ago. The infrastructure is in place though so hopefully it's only a temporary measure

Slightly related question: are they planning on extending Castle Street to the Carrickmines P&R? Would be more fitting terminus for L14 if they built it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30 Arhanedus

I don't think that was confirmed anywhere so far, but it would make sense to extend it once the road is there, otherwise the bus would basically terminate in the middle of the road.

Carrickmines SC could be a more logical terminus than the Luas stop

The masterplan involves a "transport interchange" past the junction of Castle Street & Aoibhin's Way (Barrington's Road in the picture below), although it is not clear if it will utilise the terminus at Carrickmines Luas stop or just have a walkway connecting to it (I hope it is the former).

There is also a link road going over the M50 planned to connect Cherrywood to the Carrickmines Retail Park area, that is moreso for general vehicle access but a bus route could be routed that way if needed - this could even allow for a route to head up towards Kiltiernan direction if the demand justified it.

This is all based on a document from 2016 mind you, so the plans may have changed since then. Cant seem to find a more recent version

    https://www.dlrcoco.ie/sites/dlrcoco/files/atoms/files/cherrywood_area_wide_travel_plan_updated_aug_2016.pdf

Edit: Found a clearer map showing that it isn't currently proposed to have a physical connection to Carrickmines Luas stop itself, so it seems a pedestrian link will be the current solution. Ideally that should become a bus gate arrangement in order to utilise the existing bus terminus there

I'm seeing two stops added to the L14 timetable here on Bustimes.org.

The two additional stops are Cornelscourt Beckett Park & Cornelscourt Lehaunstown Lane.

The 1st bus on Sunday the 15th June departs Beckett Park near Castle Street en route for Southern Cross Road at 7:30am.

It has an hourly frequency until 9:30am. At 10am it has the half hourly timetable until 11:30pm.

The operating hours for the L14 on Monday to Saturdays will be 6:30am to 11:30pm.

I would assume here that the L14 will be turning the bus around near the Basketball Courts in Beckett Park before it leaves Castle Street to go back en route to Southern Cross Road in Bray? Or would it use Castle Way to get the bus back onto Castle Street?

    That's right

Stop 8227 is planned for the Cherrywood bound services at Cherrywood LUAS (as per the map on the TFI and Dublin Bus sites).

Still work ongoing but shouldn’t be a hurdle to buses stopping here.

The L14 turning point would appear to be this rather tight turning circle beyond Aoibhín’s Way (or just a reversal at the crossroads as none of the roads are open beyond it).

Ah nice, I'd been hoping to get down to check it out. Yeah that turning circle looks quite tight and I'd say the buses would pick up a fair amount of dirt using it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,826 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

All part of the service! 😂

    We shall see next weekend!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,632 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

Would be less tight if the council cut back some of the hedgerow there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,826 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

Regardless of the hedgerow, as the photographer I can tell you that it’s tight.

There is a fairly significant issue on the 19 with drivers frequently taking wrong turns.

I don't even take the 19 that much (usually once or twice a week) and over the past 2/3 months I've been on buses where the driver took a wrong turn three times, all from the airport. On two occasions, the driver went straight through instead of turning right on to Glasnevin Avenue. The other time, the driver took the E2 route down Balbutcher Lane instead.

I've experienced more wrong turns on this route over the last few months than I have an all routes over the last few years. The only other time I can remember was a driver on the 41 missing the airport turn as he thought it was a 41c.

Out of curiosity, I looked at Bus Times and there are already two buses which went the wrong way today.

It's strange that it's such a problem on this route. I wonder do the drivers have mixed rosters of both the 19 and E2?

I was at Blanchardstown centre , last night around 7 and 2 W4s came in together arriving from Tallght. Between the both of them 80-100 people got off .

Great that when you think about it , 2 years ago this wasn't an option. The saying "build it and they will come" is so apt here.

N4 has been amazing since it came and the numbers using it is something else. Not surprised it's 24 hours .

I can also see the N8 being a success , when it's finally introduced.

The 19 and E2 are in the same Zone. So yes marked in drivers, drive both. I would guess that the drivers could be being told by control to skip Wadelai to get the bus back on time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭AX636

Drivers are human for God sake, mistakes do happen, I've done it myself thinking I was on a 33 instead of a 41C,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,580 ✭✭✭VG31

They were 100% mistakes. The buses weren't late anyway.

Of course, I'm not blaming them. But 3 wrong turns in 20-25 journeys is unusually high. I saw another 2 on Bus Times just for today. Drivers taking wrong turns overall is very rare in my experience, except on this route. If drivers are frequently getting the 19/E2 mixed up then DB really need to find some solution to it.

it’s a relatively new set of routes. Mistakes happen and nobody got hurt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭Fizzy Duck

    I brought a 33 through River Valley 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 126 ✭✭AX636

I brought a 41C upto to pinnock hill roundabout and quickly realised I wasn't on a 33 ha,, I did it aswel when I was on a 16 and thought i was on a 41 on the swords road forgot to turn onto Collins Avenue and went straight but just did the loop on the Santry bridge and went back into Collins Avenue thank God 🤦

The N4 has been a resounding success. I see it on my way to and from work and it is packed going both directions. Fantastic to see. If it had a bit of priority on Collins Ave at junctions, it would be amazing.

People have made their work and housing based on it. You can work in Blanch and live in Whitehall. You can live in Finglas and work in Killester. All nightmares of journeys in the past.
