One of the worst in hurling but we are blessed compared to the state some of the football counties have let their grounds get to. Big mistake not to knock it with the rest of the stadium.

The majority of GAA stadiums willingly took a hit on capacity numbers and it will never go back up.

If they ever do build a new Mackey it's actually more likely to go down even more.

There were talks a number of years ago about roofing the North Stand.

The mackey needs to be knocked. It is a big stand with very tight circulation underneath.

I suppose a cost benefit analysis would not look favourable given the limited number of games.

standard of most gaa grounds are a disgrace in every county bar dublin and puc at a stretch. They are not about comfort design or facilities. They are just concrete structures to contain 43k people for two hours.

Nearly 20 years old thomond park is a completely different supporter experience. Way more professional. I would be confident in bringing any uk/usa person there. While Gaelic grounds thurles definitely not

i know rugby is professional etc etc but that doesn’t mean the grounds have to be decrepit. Tullamore built a lovely main stand from bag packing at dunnes and Tesco so surely limerick gaa could do similar main stand but bigger.

And a roof over the north. Even a white tent thing that the rds used.

Why won't JP invest in upgrades?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,394 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Upgrades don't win you championships I assume. If it cost x amount to upgrade could put that money into sponsoring the team to help them improve on the pitch rather than stadium upgrades.

County Board should think about selling Gaelic Grounds for housing potential and redeveloping similar sized stadium elsewhere but closer to town dock road has several derelict space and arthurs quay- Dunnes/UL aint exactly contributing to the city.

Love the gaelic grounds, but its now a tip.

Land gets more expensive the closer you get to the city centre. Even on the Dock Rd.

Any move would only be further from the city and any other option is just fantasy.

Tip or not it's sadly the 3rd best stadium in the GAA. So in terms of central money it is way down the investment list.

Sadly this is it. The price of even the most modest stand of the size required has gone crazy.

Good to see Thomas Walsh reffing the Munster Final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,564 ✭✭✭Quitelife

Ticket situation seems bad for the final , most clubs are 4 and 5 times oversubscribed for stand tickets for final and terrace tickets not much better , I mentioned at work I have 2 season tickets and was offered 300 for the two open stand tickets by someone fairly desperate and not short of a few Bob not that I’m parting with my tickets

When you look at the money he gave for Quaid to be sorted in New Mexico you’d wonder why they haven’t had a new stand restructure sorted already

Quad can win you games/championships, a new stand won't.

Certainly the biggest demand for tickets during the JK era. There was huge demand for the Clare Munster Final 2023 in the Gaelic Grounds but this has surpassed that. Even all the All Irelands were easier get tickets but Croker has twice the capacity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,133 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

The 3 finals against Clare were all effectively sellouts but anyone who wanted a ticket could get one. This is very different because no fanbase can match Limerick or Cork when going well. Not trying to claim we have better fans its just demographics.

It will be manic if both meet in the final. Cork have 400k people more than our "usual" finalists Kilkenny.

While a stadium in the city centre would be nothing short of epic I would echo what breezy is saying. If anything the stadium would be built further away from the city than its current location purely on cost basis

One nice idea would be to build it on the county boundary with Clare and have a shared stadium with them. Could be cheaper than redeveloping PnG and Cusack Park

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,133 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Limerick and Clare require different sized stadiums. And it would be 3/4 teams sharing not 2 which would be tough and the club championship later rounds would cause problems.

    Also fuk Clare.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,209 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

There would be logistical challenges, no doubt. One being that the limerick/clare boundary is a stream at most points and building it there might not be very easy, it would be a nice idea though.

    Agree on the last point

Will the team be named tonight on account of the Sat evening match

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭C4000

Should be named 9pm. Hard to see any changes from the previous game barring any knocks we haven't heard about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,650 ✭✭✭High bike

Sound ,your prob right but i thought Flanagan did ok against Clare and Shane O Brien was poor so u never know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭C4000

Ye Flanagan looked sharp and did a lot of hard running. I think O Brien picked up a knock which might have impeded him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,650 ✭✭✭High bike

Well whoever he picks hopefully they are all ready to go hard from the throw in and hopefully be ready for the usual shite before the ball is thrown in

    O Connor is a bit of a curveball…..

We’ve never seen him deliver on match day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,394 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Might see him drop out for SOB or Flanagan come Saturday unless there's a fitness issue with both.

Aidan O’Connor is a fine player. He’s still young but has all the tools , strong under the high ball, clever movement, and a great striker off either side. Maybe we haven’t seen him fully light up a senior championship game yet, but that doesn't mean he can’t. Every top player needs that first breakout day, maybe Saturday will be his. Limerick have trusted him for a reason.
