Those were the days, my friend
    We thought they'd never end

Boards worked close to perfectly as a community. When it became a business it started to circle.

I tried to use it on an iPhone yesterday for the first time in months, couldn't post a link and couldn't edit my post

Also with search now: the thing you're looking for appears for a split second, and then disappears, replaced by stuff not even generated by the same search words.

Clicking on à profile and seeing their comments . Now it's just their threads . Or discussions

You can choose comments from the dropdown. Or manually alter the profile URL if you want. E.g.

Kind of off topic, but I'm always puzzled by posters who post perfectly normal uncontroversial posts on uncontroversial subjects, and then immediately disappear. Has there been a massive binfire of a thread that I didn't notice?

It's even more intriguing here as this poster is talking about posts from 2005. What on earth can have gone wrong for them in the last 10 days that hasn't happened in the last 20 years?? Must have been huge!

On topic: I miss the search engine and general performance such as non flickering threads. Also, seeing who's online.

Saw this elsewhere and thought they should bring back a curated version of the banlist, a 'league of bastards' as it were. I don't think anything would top this though

@volchitsa account deletion requests can take a long time

Supposed to be within 30 days, but in the early Vanilla days so many users got píssed off and put in deletion requests that it took a lot longer then

Some of those users had second thoughts by the time their account was actually deleted, came back with the same or slightly different usernames.

That poster could have put their request in up to a month ago (and maybe intends to open a new account - perfectly fine as long as they're not trying to get around a ban or have the two on the go at once) and was just filling in time until the deletion happened

On desktop I find the search same as before, quirky but works. Much too eager to match words with other words when it shouldn't (e.g. seach for bag and you get bagel) so you need to put quotes around what you're searching for a lot.

I get around the bouncing by opening threads in background tabs so by the time I open them it's stopped

Wow that's a bit mad alright. What site is that on, if it's not indiscreet?

Also, wasn't it on boards.ie that Graham Dwyer (who murdered Elaine O'Hara) used to post?

He had a very small number of posts as far as I remember, not a long standing member by any means

Putting the cursor over the thread name and seeing the first few lines of the post to see if it's something you'd even be interested in, or a ramble to be ignored.

And why have they now removed the quick links at the top of the page unless you go back to the top of the page. Used to stay floating at the top, but now it's at the top top… annoying…

Thanks. It was before my time I think, or maybe just not in the forums I was reading. At any rate, I only learned of it some time afterwards so I’ve no idea what sort of a poster he was.

Assuming you're talking about desktop, my browser extension (see signature for links) restores the hover preview, and also allows you to choose whether you want to sticky the header, the breadcrumbs, both, or neither.

Also restores some other vBulletin-like features: uses the full width of the page, dark mode, and you can see the full list of thanks under a post.

I remember David McSavage used to post under a few different guises and Degsy would take the piss out of him, he didn't like that at all.

That poster Biggins was some wannabe politician, think he got banned for threatening legal action.

His username was gdwyer. You used to be able to still read his posts but I'm not sure how to search using someone's username on Vanilla now.

I think he posted a few queries on the subject of remote controlled aircraft. Seemed a bit…off, from his posts.

As an 10-year ex-admin (and 15-year ex-mod), I preferred vbulletin. Some of the magic was lost in the move to vanilla.

I know it was a creaking frankenstein's monster that was pretty far removed from stock vbulletin (and impossible to maintain with limited resources). From a business perspective, I understand the move to a more stock forum experience.

But… I still miss vbulletin, warts and all. 🙂

The biggest shambles of all was that vbulletin couldn't cope with the size of the forum and number of users, so they moved to Vanilla, lost a huge chunk of users, and the Vanilla site couldn't even properly handle the reduced number of users either.

There were a good few benefits to switching to Vanilla, but it's regressed the experience in so many ways too. Can't even choose to follow a f*cking forum now because that's broke. Starting a new paragraph when on the mobile site just randomly duplicates a few letters you're typing. Pasting a bit of text puts it on a new line whether you want it to or not. Automatically trying to make you bookmark a thread you're posting in. Can't even delete a post.

Simple everyday things that hamper the user experience.

Excellent, I did not know that.

Found him. Peer into the mind of a murderer. (Apparently it's all just scale models and thesis surveys)

I don't think that was it Penn, there were probably larger vBulletin sites out there doing OK.

The (many) problems with Vanilla are nothing to do with the number of users, from what I can see

    Benefits of switching to Vanilla:

    • Loads of new smileys that are too small to make out.
    • Nothing else that I can think of.

The problem with vBulletin was that it was heavily customised and no longer supported

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,653 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Well it was definitely part of it, but from memory one of the bigger pushes was also the old mobile site, and trying to get the forum to suit both mobile and desktop.

I do think there are some benefits with Vanilla; being able to easily embed or upload pictures, links, threads not breaking after reaching a certain number of posts. But for every benefit of the new site, feels like three benefits of the old site were lost.

Thanks I've just looked at those. I suppose it's impossible to avoid using a degree of hindsight, but it's noticeable that he got quite abusive quite quickly to posters. And displayed very teenage/entitled behaviour bumping up his "urgent" thread when people didn't respond within hours. Not a word of thanks to all the hundreds he said who did fill it out for him, either. Just giving out to those with "IQs below 20" who pointed out issues with it.

He doesn't exactly come across as a nice relaxed bloke. TBF that obviously doesn't make him a murderer, which is where the hindsight comes in.

Love Shay_562's response to him, little did he know!

'Gave up on survey after the second "Rank these random things using random variables" question. Having read the rest of the thread, I'm pretty glad - I find you to be one of the most rude and arrogant people I've ever seen on these boards (and believe me, that's saying something), and I'd hate to think I'd spent any time helping you. Numerous posts in the space of less than 5 hours telling people to hurry up and fill out your survey? Responding to questions about the nature of the survey with "it's all in this book, haven't you read it?"? Ignoring a valid criticism of how confusing and poorly-worded the test is with "Well, all I want is to collect data" - did it occur to you that information may be more readily offered and more accurate if people know what the hell it is you're asking?

In future, you might want to remember that you're asking people to give up their free time for nothing to help you, and a little bit of civility mightn't go astray - at the very least, try not to

    actively hassle people

for not having filled out your poxy survey yet at 2 in the afternoon on a college-based message board the week before Christmas exams. Jesus Christ...'

There was a time when posting on this site was absolutely amazing craic, just loads of sound people having fun. The busier forums all had "chat" threads where you'd make friends. I'm still in a whatsapp group of people who met in the chat thread on one of the busiest forums on the site back then, and the atmosphere and general fun never left the group dynamic.

There were also forums where people just posted to have fun, no real purpose to those forums apart from meeting people, having fun and actually meeting in real life for pints. I'm talking about BGRH and TLL mostly. There are people alive in the world today because of those forums, and I mean literal humans who's existence was made possible because of the people who met at social events borne of those forums, couples met and got married and had kids.

There was a football team out there, wearing the boards logo winning trophies under the name of Boards.ie. A cycling club with the same logo on their lycra!! Sports clubs formed by a bunch of sound nerds from this website! Can you even imagine that happening today?

That's when boards was good, then came about a decade of weirder and weirder decisions at the top level, owners and admins both, taking the site in mad directions, clamping down on the very things that made this site an actual good place to interact in a genuine level with other people of the same mind.

It's such a pity they ruined it.
