I wouldnt even bother with the Shop St mall if they are giving you the run around. Ive used them before and they were the typical bollix sales assistants - Theres 2 other VF stores in Galway.

Failing that even head out to Athenry. I was there earlier this year and the staff there are actually sound and cant do enough to help.

I wish I had known they might take my Pixel 3a, gave them a 6a in pristine condition…

Oh they didn't call me back so I went in and spoke with the manager and explained about advertising standards authority and consumer protection false advertising etc..

Genuinely it seems my phone is not on the in store system yet is on the website trade in offer...oh was told offer only available if I port my number...I said website says I can get a new payg number...tried to tell me phone was locked to Vodafone...I said that's nonsense theirs a EU directive making it illegal for providers to lock handsets...

Anyways was told then offer only available till the end of the month and I said it says 30th June on the website lol

Told her put a phone aside for me I don't want to be told they are sold out when she does get back to me...which she will as she knows I ain't messing about...

Similar to my experience in Limerick at the weekend.

Dealing with liars, make it up as you go along stuff, while listening to one staff member b1tch that another didn't come in as she was too hungover.

You need to be very direct and straight to the point from the start.

Always ask if the phone is in stock before saying you wanna trade. State the website says you accept "pixel 6a" or whatever you're trading in.

Prepare to be told the phone is locked and only works with a Vodafone SIM card, acknowledge that.

Don't be bullied into paying for a top up amount.

Anybody know what app they download onto the phone to test?

I didn't catch the name of it but it's def on the Google Play store as I had mine disabled and had to re-enable it to download.

Thanks OP , my kid had a clapped out Samsung A14 he was complaining about the battery . It was a non European version so had no NFC . I was full sure it wouldn't be accepted

They took it no issue - installed some app and done testing on the screen - €175 later new pixel in hand

Even better because as he was angling for a new iphone 😅

it’s called “retail Vodafone trade in” and the app dev is called “blackbelt smartphone defence ltd.”

But it needs a One time passcode, so you can't run it at home to check...

To avoid most of the lies, locked to Vodafone nonsense and having to buy credit, could you just say that you are buying the phone as a present for your mom or wife and they are already on Vodafone network

Exactly, I normally say I'm gonna port over in 3 weeks once my current top up plan expires. Never get any further hassle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,154 ✭✭✭Barr

I just took it out as a new number - they never asked if I needed credit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,851 ✭✭✭smallgarden

I think they automatically add the €20 credit to the new number in the shop. That's why it's €420 starting price vs €400 starting price online if getting a new number. Managed to trade in my old 3a so was delighted.

I got the Vodafone sim and swapped it to an esim but can't seem to activate it. Said I'd try it out for the month as I'm with 48 which can be a bit temperamental.

They didn't do that for me . When I got the new sim card -they never mentioned adding credit . When I got home I tried the sim and it said not registered - I don't even know what the new number is supposed to be

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,851 ✭✭✭smallgarden

I don't think they even bothered registering mine either. I had to ring them to try set up esim and after an hour on the phone it's still not working but I think myvodafone my account is set up properly now.

So many elements of the process didn't work so it wouldn't give me any incentive to move to the Vodafone network at all.

When buying the phone they put a sticky with the new number on it. They added the credit and activated a plan in the shop for me so it'll just show up as 0.50 cent credit once the plan is activated.

Bought one today in Vodafone shop. Got €22 plus the €200 for an old Samsung S9. So €178 for a fantastic Pixel phone. They asked me if I had a Vodafone number. I said I didn't, wasn't a problem. Even gave me a Vodafone SIM card in case I decided to move. What a bargain!

If anyone is wondering about the app they use to test, there's a web-based version on the site if you go partly thru the trade-in process on your phone. You can use that as a guideline and then trade in in-store if the phone is healthy, though as we've seen across the thread, the models accepted differ online.

Think the S9 is the oldest S Samsung they accept on the list . I have a couple of S5's around - they were a non runner

Thanks to a good Spiegel case, the S9 was remarkably in near perfect condition, despite numerous drops, falls, kicks.. We couldn't even find a scratch on the screen. And still working perfectly. Only problem was the wired usb charging port was faulty so the phone could only be charged wirelessly.

Thats the one thing I have to hand to Samsung - I have never been able to break any of their S Series. There probably is loads of old ones around in drawers

What store was that? Anyone get in with no hassle/switching etc in Liffey Valley

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,154 ✭✭✭Barr

Did anyone buy with three . When I was talking to them in store they said there was a free watch with the 9a? I don't see any mention on the website though

I brought 2 phones into Drogheda store. Redmi 6 and iphone 8. they wouldnt take the former at all. screen was broke on the iphone but they they took it anyway. I had just recieved a 48 sim in the post and brought that in. they said i would have to port that number over to vodafone which they did instore. Had to buy their vodafone SIM with 20 credit on it. total cost was 216 and they said the phone was locked to vodafone but i knew it wasnt. i'll use the vodafone credit and then get the number ported back. They didnt have any decent covers in the shop so i got this one on amazon ….

PS if you ring ahead with IMEI number they will tell you whether the phone is eligible for trade in so might save you a wasted trip

It was a Google promotion for the release of the 9a. Buy a 9a from participating retailer and get a free Fitbit Charge 6. Ended on May 6.
