I have my original switch at launch but only have hand full of games mainly just first party games.

I get switch 2 for games like Metroid prime 4 and donkey Kong and expansion pass for to play wind waker again.

Physical all the way with Nintendo. Much cheaper and you can sell them at a decent price if you don't want them anymore. And you can share them easily.

There used to be e.g. 3 for the price of 2 offers regularly from Amazon Germany, but that just stopped. And Nintendo used to have Nintendo Selects, i.e. their big sellers discounted. No more.

Wondering will Switch 1 cartridges not have the performance boost on Switch 2.

So, example, BOTW has much fast loading on Switch 2, wondering if this only applies to the new Switch 2 carts and digital games only, so Switch 1 carts won't have this boost ?

From what I'm reading, most of the boost is from faster decompression in the new Switch ... and also we don't know yet. Maybe it'll install the game digitally to Switch 2 if you have the Switch 1 cart.

If you get the expansion pass you get the free upgrade for Zelda breath of wild and Tears of the kingdom for length of your subscription.

I was talking about loading speeds from Switch 1 carts Vs Switch 2 carts/digital ... when the Switch 1 cart is in a Switch 2, and the game has been upgraded.

I would expect (but don't know this for a fact) that Switch 1 cart + Upgrade pack = digital download of Switch 2 version and that the cart just acts as a licence.

I’ve always bought physical Nintendo games but I’m seriously considering going digital this gen for a number of reasons.

After using the Steam Deck since release it is nice to have your whole collection available to switch between and not be changing cartridges. Also Nintendo have gotten their act together since the 3DS/Wii U era were your account and games were linked to a console.

Family sharing, while nowhere near as good as Steam’s implementation , is still nice option to have for sharing digital purchases.

It seems their strategy for Switch 2 is physical games will be more expensive than digital which is the complete opposite to Switch 1. I’d say retailers could sell below RRP but that’d probably just put them on par with digital.

And finally I’ve traded in/sold a number of games in the past that years later I’ve wanted to go back to and regret selling them. Some easy to fine, others not so. I know this is a me problem though 😂

VRR docked a no go in the end. Initially looked at announcement that is was going to be handheld only anyway, but the recent specs info was a welcome surprise, but appears to have been in error.

Shame really, especially considering 95% of Switch use is while docked from a personal perspective.

"Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error," Nintendo said today.

Yea the convenience factor pulls strong. Going digital also removes the FOMO, since you don't have to rush out and secure a physical. Decisions decisions..

Why can't Nintendo provide VRR docked in 2025 ? Also I see the PS5 has a stutter problem with vrr in certain situations, and a small vrr window. Seems like MS got it right.

Hopefully it's something that can be patched in later. From what I hear, it's already capable of providing docked VRR from a hardware perspective.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 161 ✭✭ThePandazorian

It can't be patched. It's a technical issue between DisplayPort (DP) and HDMI. Switch and Switch 2 use the DP protocol over USB-C to output video and the dock "converts" that to the HDMI protocol for TVs.
VRR doesn't like conversion and while it can be possible, it wouldn't have a good VRR experience on your TV anyways and you'd be better off turning off VRR in that case.

It's not a problem unique to Nintendo and will likely eventually be solved in hardware but not for Switch 2.

Are switch's region locked? If I was to pick one up while in France other than the plug, is there any difference?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,507 ✭✭✭Irish Halo

No, I have a UK/Irish switch and have played physical games that I have bought in the US, Taiwan and Germany. Even if it was, France would be the same region as Ireland.

EDIT: France used to be an issue when they used the SECAM format rather than PAL or NTSC but that is a long time ago

Just a heads up for anyone who may have pre-ordered or was thinking of ordering the 512gb micro sd express card from Smyths, the date looks to have been pushed out to the end of July

The 256gb version is in stock now though

Of course you'd be able to play it in English.

    Hi all,

For the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World Pack does it comes with a physical cart\cartridge in the box or some sort of digital download? If it is a digital download is it locked to that console or could it be given to someone else? I ask because I want to go all physical in terms of games. I pre-ordered the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World Pack without thinking that the game might be digital. I wish now I just pre-ordered the base pack which would allow me to buy the physical game etc.

    Thanks,

    M

I think they are all download codes in Europe. Not an issue for me personally as I doubt I will want to sell MK at any point.

it’s a digital download of Mario Kart that comes with the Switch 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,382 ✭✭✭madmoe

Thanks all. If I don't use it could it be given to someone else or is it tied in any way to the console?

    Cheers,

    https://amzn.eu/d/cYuR7oh

50% off promo code (claim on sales page) takes this down to £4.38

So £1.09 per Switch 2 screen protector

I'd imagine it'll be pre installed but I could be wrong?

I’d assume it’ll come as a download code in the box…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 880 ✭✭✭eoinbn

Yes, it seems to be a download code in Europe. I believe it is preloaded in the US so the information online can be conflicting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,382 ✭✭✭madmoe

I guess we will have to wait until the day and see for sure. I do hope it is a code, I'll keep it rather than redeeming it and buy a copy of Mario Kart World instore.

    Cheers,

    M

Why is this 509 euro ? You would think they'd have left it a 499 euro. I think I saw Amazon France had it for that, but not including delivery of course.

I really wish they'd produce a cheaper home console version of Switch, no expensive screen, no expensive dock, with VRR, for people who don't play hand held. With a pro controller instead of the joy cons.

They produced the Lite, which is handheld only, so please go the other way Nintendo. It could be such a dinky little console, like the PC Engine, they could sell a load of them. Also, cause it's fixed they could create a load of custom versions for influencer marketers to generate a ton of FOMO.
