Yes, the NTA placed their first order with Wrightbus back in June 2022, the first Double Decker BZL's didn't arrive until 2023 (though single deckers were around earlier).

I've no idea if true, but I also remember another poster saying in the past that the contract for the SG class was with Volvo, not Wrightbus and that Volvo were responsible for service and maintenance, but the NTA weren't happy with the service, which is why they might have tried ADL for the PA's. Again I've no idea if true.

These BZL's are made in Turkey by MCV. Volvo Chassis, MCV body.

I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing that our buses are made just up the road and the relationship is with one company, the manufacture of both chassis and body. That should make support easier.

The Electroliners are extremely popular in the UK, Go Ahead UK recently placed an order for 1,200 of them over 3 years! And they seem to be working quiet well for us, despite some issues.

Having said that, it is great that there are more options now, these are the double deckers widely available:

    • Wrightbus Electroliner
    • ADL Enviro400EV (the new ones, with CATL batteries and no involvement with BYD).
    • Volvo/MCV BZL
    • BYD BD11

No idea what has been going on with Switch/Optare.

What is was told BK, at the of the hybrids being ordered the Volvo hybrid (VH fleet) was the first choice but since Wrightbus went bust at the time it went to ADL, that was from someone in the engineering department that said it. So take it as it is

The Volvo hybrids were VH not the AH. The AHs were the ADL hybrids on trial.

Had an unfortunate incident with one of the new EW class buses just after Hartstown roundabout yesterday . It broke down . Given the setup of the road , it was a bit tough for people getting off the bus etc.

It was still there 90 minutes later when I passed that area again .

@bk Multiple reasons, just being newer they have less wear and tear and look in much better condition while the AX/EV look like their falling apart.

    they're

Was on one of the new Wrightbus GB Hawk single deckers in Belfast recently, very comfortable ride experience and smooth journey. Why don’t NTA order some of these to replace the noisy, rattly and uncomfortable Streetlite pieces of s**t? GAI could use them.

Would love if we got some of the Gb Kite Electroliner or even some of the newer Enviro200evs for GAI. Not 100% necessary though so likely not to happen for a while. The NTA should make GAI transition to bev in general asap

Nothing to do with GAI. Nearly all the buses that GAI use are owned by the NTA. GAI will move to BEV as soon as the NTA buy them BEV buses.

But, the NTA aren't replacing newer buses with BEV, they are only replacing the oldest buses with BEV's as the oldest buses approach retirement age. The Streetlites are only 6 or 7 years old, so unfortunately likely to be around for many years to come.

The NTA have more immediate needs like having to retire the remaining 15+ year old single door double deckers.

A 2006 reg, single door AX showed up on the 68 home from work this evening. Here was me thinking the mouldy 08 EV's were as bad as it gets!

Unfortunately they are coming out of retirement as 35 SG type buses are being transferred over to Go-Ahead

Have there ever been buses this old in regular service with DB/CIE in Dublin before?

Obviously the Ghostbus units are old and there's been some museum pieces on schools duties for BE.

The UK operators who had got used to running 12 year old Dublin cast offs have probably had a dry few years!

So you would you have preferred another hour's wait?

I'd rather an AV/AX (of which there are still plenty trundling around Dublin and elsewhere daily without issues) than some of the newer stuff.

I'm seeing several of these new electric ones stopped by the side of the road with hazard lights blinking of late. This is what happens I guess when you let enviromentalist hysteria overrule good sense - early adoption of vehicles that we either aren't ready for yet, or which aren't ready for what we need.

I'm fairly sure the last surviving Bombardier buses, still struggling on until late 2000, were of a similar age. Also, there were still a few >20 year old Leyland buses in the mid-90s. And God knows how old the half-cabs were in the early '80s.

It was nearly all smaller independent operators that do private hire, school work and the likes that were buying the ex DB stuff in the UK. A few have ended up on service work too again with smaller operators however there was 5 00 AVs that ended up with Stagecoach in Scotland as a result of an acquistion of a smaller local operator.

There was someone in Warrington - the actual council bus operator I think, its one of the places that retained them - running a reasonable number of RA/V/Hs (at this stage I can't remember which subtype) in the late 00s as the main buses in the area, which I always found odd - they seemed antiquated in their day here!

Might not be the right place.

The on board announcements are not working, starting mid route for a few stops or announcing one stop and stopping. Appears to be accross all fleets and multipal routes 1, 16, all 41, 33, 19 etc.

They have also renamed North Circular Rd stop.

The last of the RA Class of half-cab buses (RA 33) was withdrawn in April 1982, having entered service in May 1959. One month short of 23 years service.

I doubt that record will be beaten.

The KDs made it to about 19 years.

This website gives a detailed history of CIÉ buses:

    https://www.classicbuses.co.uk/%2BCIE-45-50.html

Different eras can be selected near the top.

Do we have any idea when the EA’s will be back? Very poor from Byd that they’re off service with an issue that I would have thought would be straightforward enough to manufacture

There are running around Athlone all day every day just fine, so no idea what is up with them in Dublin.

Actually now that I think of it, is it down to not enough chargers in depots? I get the impression that more EW class double deckers have been delivered then chargers available in depots so far. If that is the case, then it would make sense to prioritise using the double decker EW's over the single decker EA's, at least until the O launches.

BTW Really interesting article about the installation of the chargers in the depots by the team who did the work. Great pictures:

I have to say, I love the way the buses display their charging station on the front of them.

They've brought back 2 of them at Conyngham Road depot as they've sent 2 SGs to Go-Ahead.
