Whats the poor picture other provences are painting, the other 3 provences are no where comparable to Leinster so NiQ will always play.

I think ye are nuts not to start Barrett, this is what ye signed him for so play the best team...Healy is a v odd selection imo

People are massively overthinking this and, as always, defaulting to the most negative assumptions.

I've gone into plenty of detail on other threads about the issues within other provinces over the years that paint themselves in a poor light so no need to derail the Leinster thread with it.

Barrett was signed to help win Europe and this is what they see is the best path. If he doesnt start the final Id question it but for the semi it makes sense for numerous reasons, including what I included in my post.

Healy selection isnt odd at all if you've paid any attention to how Porter has been used by Leinster - he comes on after 20 minutes to exploit a substitution loophole.

Healy can come back on if Porter is injured, so replacing him at 20 minutes isn't so much of a risk.

I doubt that's the reason they do it though.

The whole point of this is so Porter is on at the end of the match. Exploiting a loophole would be starting Porter, bringing on Healy, and then Healy getting "injured" to bring Porter back on.

It wasn't envisaged for either scenario realistically.

Other provinces seem to take the opposite approach and nearly go out of their way to paint a poor picture for to the IRFU and then wonder why they dont get their way.

Mod: this thread is not a safe space for you to troll and bait supporters of other provinces which is all this sentence seeks to achieve. Warned.

Really don't see Northampton capitulating, gonna be a cracker of a match.

It is absolutely exploiting a loophole.

For non-front row positions if a player picks up an injury they can't be brought back on. For example, starting Luke McGrath at SH, if they bring on JGP and JGP picks up a calf stain they cant bring McGrath back on so you have no SH option.

There is zero chance they'd start Porter from the bench if Healy wasn't able to come on if Porter picked up an injury. Cant see that being anything but exploiting a loophole.

It won't make sense if Northampton put it up to Leinster, now I'm not expecting that to happen with or without Barrett starting but stranger things have happened. Just seems like a meaningless risk to take even if the risk is minimal. You only get one chance to make the final. Semi finals and finals in any sport you need to be starting your best players not just because he's the best center Leinster have but because he's arguably the best player they have in any position

We will agree to differ then as imo it doesn't make any sense not to start him, as you said he was signed to help win it, benching him doesn't add up in my book.

Anyways hope it works out for ye

There is a test lion playing instead of Barrett. Think people are really overreacting to this. Team is not even out yet sure.

I don't see why not. It's beneficial for the player, it takes him off the NZRU's wage bill for a season, and there's still plenty of playing time for younger players to get experience, all the while learning from him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,349 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

It does make sense when you look bigger picture. He is helping Leinster win it without setting fire to goodwill.

Barrett starting vs benching makes a tiny impact on the likelihood of Leinster winning this weekend. It could even be a benefit to have him coming on strong towards the end of the match, where Leinster fell apart last year.

At the same time it makes Henshaw/Ringrose much happier by giving them one last chance to be in the shop window for the Lions, it keeps the IRFU onside with signings, makes the likes of NZ rugby happy, while also mitigating the risk of the media kicking up a fuss in the lead up to the final.

Again, there are plenty of reasons why Leinster don't have players running for the door when they have options to, one of them is smart management of the wider squad.

For all we know Barrett might be starting or we hear he had a niggle coming into the week but there are plenty of ways for it to make sense that he doesn't start. Good with your proposal to agree to differ.

Yeah, maybe they want a stacked bench and they'll have it. It's worked pretty well so far whenever they've used Barrett off the bench.

Leo does this well, let him Jacques & Tyler do their thing !

I think it's a glitch with the colours on the video. Here's a Sportsfile photo of the same training session:

Team is as expected from earlier this week. Porter and Barrett start from the bench. James Ryan still out.

    Cracking team. Roll on tomorrow.

Barretts impact off the bench will be something else.

Great to see Deegan and TOB getting the nod.

Happy with that. Would have had Mangan in instead of Baird but Baird was good last week so no real complaints.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,972 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

None of Northampton's injury concerns appear to have made it for this weekend. It's stillma good squad, but they're probably 4 or 5 players short of full strength.

Furbank and Sleighhome missing...not sure who else..

Hendy would be the other back 3 option they've lost.. He's a decent enough player and is on the fringes of the England squad at present.

He would have been next up for either of the above , so they are down another outside back starting and on the bench..

Jesus I can't wait for this.

The selection is a vindication of Max Deegan. A consistent run of good performances and he makes the team for CC semifinal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,635 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Yeah Well deserved. It could be more about conan's impact off the bench than a switch in the pecking order between Deegan and Conan.

I really don't mind because they're both very good. Deegan has really pushed his case this year. Happy for him.

Conan is 33 this summer and Deegan is 29 in October. So he's a great medium term replacement if he keeps this form.

100%. Delighted for him and hopefully it shuts the likes of Heaslip up with his constant he should move to a different province comments. I'm sure he is far happier being involved with Leinster at this time of year than having a week off this week like he would have had at Ulster or wherever else Heaslip wanted him to end up.
