Worst Leinster performance in a very long time, got exactly what was deserved from that game unfortunately. Lot of poor performances.

Boyle had a great impact, let's pretend the rest didn't happen.

Anyway...looking ahead to next weekend.. Saints had a good win I over Bristol today.. I don’t think they should be underestimated..

I wouldn’t be too frustrated with the performance considering the selection.

I am frustrated with the selection!

    Frawley switched back to 15.

Osborne switched back to 12 (1st since Oct).

    Baird switched back to 4.

It’s confusing for the team, the players themselves and ultimately doesn’t help either.

Depth? Not if you are continually shuffling players like that around.

One to forget let’s leave it at that. Onto next weekend. Haven’t seen such a shocker on basic skills , talented players who couldn’t catch a ball from 3 metres away hardly moving and what looked like a bone dry day.

Leinster player ratings vs Scarlets | 2024/25 URC

By Ian Cameron 2 hours ago

Leinster player ratings: Leo Cullen’s men fell only their second loss of the season, but they can have no complaints with this 35-22 loss to Scarlets, as it probably was Leinster’s messiest performance of the season.

    We rate the Leinster players:

    1. Cian Healy – 7
A typically combative showing from the veteran, scrapping for every inch at scrum time. Carried with plenty of venom too, even if he didn’t quite get Leinster on the front foot as much as he wanted.

    2. Ronan Kelleher – 4
Could easily have seen yellow for an aerial challenge and never fully recovered his rhythm. Flashes of his dynamic carrying game were there, but his poor discipline left plenty to be desired. Not an ideal showing for the Lionslong-shot.

    3. Thomas Clarkson – 6
A gorgeous pass to put Culhane away showed he’s not just a scrummager, but he creaked under Scarlets’ pressure at the set-piece. Gave away a costly penalty for holding on.

    4. Ryan Baird – 6
Didn’t put a foot wrong but struggled to stamp his authority on the contest.

    5. Brian Deeny – NA
Lasted less than a quarter of an hour before injury struck.

    6. Alex Soroka – 5.5
Tried to tread the fine line between aggressive and reckless but fell foul of the referee more than once. Came close to scoring late on but it wasn’t quite his afternoon.

    7. Will Connors – 6
Steady and industrious without really catching the eye. A classic shift full of unseen donkey work.

    8. James Culhane – 7.5
Showed a nose for the line with a well-taken close-range try. Strong in the carry and busy throughout.

    9. Fintan Gunne – 7
Passing was crisp and his decision-making kept Leinster ticking. Not at fault here.

    10. Ross Byrne – 6.5
Kicked accurately and even pulled out a side-step or two. Blotted his copybook slightly with a needless intercepted pass, but otherwise a decent outing.

    11. Jimmy O’Brien – 6
Linked play nicely and distributed well in attack. Gave away an avoidable penalty which handed Scarlets field position at a bad time.

    12. Jamie Osborne – 5.5
Took his try well after the Mangan charge-down but was guilty of missing several tackles. A mixed bag but still showed flashes of what he can do.

    13. Liam Turner – 7
Made a couple of important turnovers and was willing to bustle in heavy traffic. Couldn’t quite finish off a clean break but put in a shift.

    14. Andrew Osborne – 4.5
Lost a ball in the air early and never fully recovered his confidence. Caught out for Tom Rogers’ try too.

    15. Ciaran Frawley – 6.5
A steady presence under the high ball and ran back kicks with real intent. One of Leinster’s best on a night when they needed a few more to front up.

    REPLACEMENTS

    16. Gus McCarthy – 5
Bounced around with energy but a messy offside boot at a ruck gifted Scarlets points.

    17. Jack Boyle – 6
Conceded a penalty for hands in the ruck after arriving at the breakdown like a runaway shopping trolley.

    18. Rabah Slimani – 6
Improved the stability of the Leinster scrum after Clarkson departed.

    19. Diarmuid Mangan – 6.5
Charged down Costelow’s kick superbly to set up Osborne’s try and got himself a meat pie too. A lively cameo with just a few rough edges.

    20. Scott Penny – 5
Threw himself into everything but didn’t really swing the momentum back Leinster’s way.

    21. Cormac Foley – 5
Sniffed out a defensive lapse for a late break and was solid overall.

    22. Charlie Tector – 5
Needs to add a little more polish — fired too many missiles at his forwards’ ankles.

    23. Ruben Moloney – NA
Not on long enough to leave an imprint.

Ross Byrne dropped an absolute stinker. He was shocking and he got a 6.5. Boyle was excellent, carried incredibly well, solid at set piece etc and got a 6. Wouldn't trust those ratings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 910 ✭✭✭johnh6767

Very low for a Leinster performance 3 or 4 over 7, and lots 5 or below. Always will be a few ajar and you spotted the outliers as did I. Boyle to me was a 7 and Ross a 6 only due to his points from tee, 5.5 in main play just not dialled in. But no matter who does a rating there will always be disagreement it’s nearly the point of them

The Welsh commentators both thinking it was a harsh decision to disallow the try after seeing the replay was amazing to hear.

Kelleher made three turnovers by my reckoning. Straight up steals, not penalties, giving quick turnover ball. Not sure he was the worst player on the pitch and fairly certain Healy wasn't the best.

Find I rarely agree with ratings at all, sometimes wonder if the person even watched the game.

Pretty dreadful performance yesterday but how the squad has done to this point allows them to have that and rest every starter for next week.

Some positives from it I thought Baird, Soroka, Osbourne and Boyle were good. Kelleher, Boyle and Byrne the only ones we will likely see next week. Maybe Baird if covering second row on the bench.

Gunne's box kicking was dreadful. He seems to be highly rated but I thought some of his game was poor. Byrne was grim really. Andrew Osborne was so crap he could be an Ulster player. Is that too harsh?🤣

A lot of the ratings are just the narrative around the player that existed before the game, and aren't reflective of what actually happened in the game at all.

Kelleher had a good gamer in the end, he definitely settled into it, stopped trying to change the game on his own.

Overall, a terrible performance, but understandable considering the changes. Squad depth is never about having two teams capable of winning every match, it's about having good enough players that can swap into the first team without too much of a drop in standards, and yesterday's performance doesn't really reflect that reality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 440 ✭✭conquestscarer

Ross had a terrible game. If Harry Byrne had the exact same game there would be calls for us to ostracize him from the team. He had us **** about in our own half and they abused his lack of running game in defence by using him as a trigger to rush when he caught the ball.

Reminded me of the Northampton game last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 910 ✭✭✭johnh6767

harsh on Gunne who I felt was good all round , created & saved a try, and bar the box kick that didn’t move too far along he left a few nice hangers, what struck me was the lack of chasers as they were very contestable. Opposite for Scarlets who took a lot of ball in the air. Byrne & Osborne both had disappointing games, but when the team is off form it can be hard to drag yourself ahead. Agree with Catinbox terrible all round but the drastic changes doesn’t help the team performance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 910 ✭✭✭johnh6767

Probably insufficient recognition of Scarlets who took all their chances , they were on form with a huge variance in play making and destroyed our midfield defence which is traditionally a high spot

I’m surprised Osborne is getting as much game time as he is.

Probably harsh, he’s 21, but his performances haven’t been good enough. Leinster clearly see something that I’m not.

I’m hopeful Gunne will become a good Leinster player. Like McGrath.

With a bit of luck he might become an international.

Any word on Larmour these days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 910 ✭✭✭johnh6767

Larmour seems to be out for the season but nobody knows what he’s recovering from . Where’s McErlean feel he could swap more with Andy Osborne who has dominated time on the clock

So Leinster have the SF this weekend, if they win are the front-liners going to be wrapped in cotton wool again until the final? It's 3 weeks from the SF, that is too long imo, they need to play again before that.

No, but I'm not sure what they'll do. Either mix and match over the two games or just full on for Zebre and rest a lot for Glasgow.

It is a shame the Glasgow and Zebre games aren't the other way around really.

Not really. We are basically 2 match points from an insurmountable lead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 910 ✭✭✭johnh6767

Fair point Podge, although momentum also important going into it if we get to that point

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,972 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

We should beat Northampton. They've played well in Europe this season, but their domestic form isn't particularly good. They just lack the quality up front. In last seasons semi final Courtney Lawes was probably the best player on the pitch, but he's playing in France these days, as is Lewis Ludlam. Henry Pollack is already very good, but he's not at the level where he can make up for the loss of either one of them.

Last season we targeted the passing channels between 10-12-13. Fin Smith got really flustered that day and a lot of Saints attacks broke down in midfield through knock ons. I'm sure they'll be better prepared for that this season though. An area of weakness in the rush defence is if you can get a quick tip on pass before the defender gets to you. Smith has excellent hands and can make those sort of passes without actually having to catch the ball first. Seen him do it a lot this season and they usually lead to like breaks.

I also think Leinster are a better attacking side this season. In that game at Croker we started fast enough with some nice trys, but we struggled to score after that. Ross Byrne had a very poor day from the tee also. Missed at least 3 penalties which would have put us well ahead. Prendergast and Barrett gives us a greater threat through their passing and kicking skills alone.

Biggest difference for me this year is Prendergast, that game last year was the game that confirmed Byrne limitations at the top level. Everytime the guy touched the ball their defence sagged off him and he didn't carry the ball. Prendergast isn't a prolific carry threat but he is a break threat Ala that break against Glasgow.

Lawes and Ludlum are big misses but to me Pollock looks like England's best back rower, his stats this tournament have been ridiculous aswell.

We have better creative options this season. Last year was the JGP show. He's a brilliant 9 and everything was going through him. That wasn't really an issue either as he was in such good form. He's playing brilliantly this season too, but we function better in attack with Prendergast at 10. He's a far better playmaker than Byrne.

Last seasons final against Toulouse showcased our limitations. A lot of moves broke down in midfield and/or the final pass was dropped too often. JGP was at the heart of everything we did well, but with Prendergast and Barrett alongside him we have a greater threat as well as taking some of the burden off him.

Shiney Shiney's Ratings of Ian Cameron's Ratings

    Ian Cameron 4.5

Rated players erratically having obviously not watched much of the game. Got a couple right but more by accident and luck than rugby analysis. Poor showing in light of being outside Lions ratings bolter.
