My advise would be to put it on the wall. Unless you have a real reason such as EWI then don't bother your arse putting on a pedestal. Most installers charge an arm and a leg and put roadblocks in the way of any non normal install.

I have EWI and put a tall sleeper into concrete path to install the charger its 100 mm away from wall to allow painting behind it.

Hey folks plenty of info on the thread here, I am looking at buying an ohme home pro and diy installing with the help of a local reci.

Loads of mentions of fokera & other installers but little for the diy'er. Does anyone have a keenly priced distributor for the Ohme chargers?

    Hi Folks,

My wall mounted electrical charger has stopped working and I'm told it's for the bin.

The cabling to/from my socket box is in place, I've no grant available.

Got quoted 2,200 from a local electrician - can any recommend anyone more reasonable please?

That sounds more like a quote for a full install from scratch, was he clear on it just being a replacement of an existing charger?

Anyway, it's normally fairly straightforward to swap, you could source a charger yourself if you wanted. It should then be just a quick 'labour' cost only job for any sparks. (Presumably you don't want to DIY)

You might even be able to sell the broken one for parts on adverts for a few quid if you put it up with a good description of the issues.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Sorry just double checked the quote and he had 2 x different chargers listed:

    Labour @ 210 Euro + VAT

    Garo Entity charger @ 1,084.05 + VAT

    EV Wall charger socket 2 7.4KW CT @ 669.90 + VAT

    Are those prices reasonable??

Good idea selling the broken one, I'll get the installer to check it for me

Ye, I'd get a few more quotes, seems fairly pricey when compared to some quotes people have posted here for full new installs.

What charger are you replacing and do you need all the bells and whistles for solar/timers etc or does your car have a decent timer?

One of my colleagues was in a similar situation a while back, got a used 'dumb' charger from Adverts for €40 and swapped it out himself.

You can buy a zappi (typically most expensive brand) delivered for 600 euro from eBay from an Irish seller. Installers presumably get a discount on them, reduced vat etc. Ideally you want to aim for 1000 all in including vat, charger, labor. Folkarn are typically good value. They list minimum prices here. Prices can be higher when charger is far from fuse board etc.

Have a leaf l30 for a few years and charge at home using a wall box charger with a tethered type 1 cable all working great but recently bought an Enyaq that uses a type 2 charger. I was wondering what the best option is regarding the wallbox? Can the tether be removed and replaced with an untethered so both cars can plug in? Or is it easier to get a type 1 to type 2 adapter for the Enyaq? Appreciate any suggestions if anyone has had a similar problem, thanks.

Totally new to EVs. Volkswagen recommend Ohme Chargers. So for my house which one should I select please? Ohme Home Pro? Thank you

    Volkswagen recommend Ohme Chargers

Thats interesting, considering they have their own Volkswagen branded charge point which is fairly decent quality!

And you can buy those Elli/VW ones for about 225 from eBay in Germany. So very good value too.

    Yup, still borked.

An adapter is the quickest/easiest/cheapest solution, but can be inconvenient to use constantly long term, but depending on how long you plan to keep the leaf, might be a good short-term fix for you.

Replacing tethered with un-tethered would involve replacing the entire charger and probably be the most expensive option, replacing the current type 1 tether with a type 2 tether cable on your existing charger is also an option(maybe after the leaf is replaced so you don't need another adaptor for it).

    Would the granny charger do to keep the L30 topped up or just buy something like this;

Recommend just means commercial partnership, it doesn't mean they're any more suitable for a vw or any other car than other brands. Pick whichever charger you want

    Hi

Not sure if this is the right place for this but not sure where else to post it.

I have a new Kia EV3 and I'm trying to use a public (well, at work) charger for this first time but I'm getting the error "[Alarm] Cannot start charging. Unexpected vehicle status"

Usually I charge at home on a zappi, the one I'm using here is a 7.4kW EasyGo charger.

I've turned off scheduled charging on the Kia app as I figured that would be preventing it from starting but still no good.

Anyone know what else I can try?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,353 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Easygo chargers break all the time. Sometimes it needs a reboot , I'd lodge a report to easygo . I've had about a 50 percent hit ratio with their charging network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,486 ✭✭✭MacDanger

I'm pretty sure it's the car side rather than the charger - I've tried 3 different chargers and all the same. Another person was able to use one of the ones that was erroring for me

Its not an exact science but as I said the easygo chargers have been woeful for me. I come back a few weeks later and suddenly the devices are working. Reboot remotely seems to be their go to remedy.

Nothing changes on my car side BTW as I don't use any scheduled stuff. Just drive and charge.

Had the same issue with 1 of the ESB.l chargers near by months of no charge kicking in. Then 1 day tried it for the laugh. Working.

    Lodge a report to easygo

do untethered chargers allow you to lock the cable in place when charging?

i live on a busy road, and the charger would be very visible from the footpath. i don't like the idea of someone messing with the cable in a tethered charger, but would an untethered charger run the risk of someone nicking the cable when the car is charging?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,315 ✭✭✭zg3409

Depending on unit it should lock when charging and you can set it to lock when not charging too. It's a plastic lock so may not stop vandals nor theft. Some people put an eye bolt in the wall and physically lock the cable with a padlock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,486 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Got it sorted in the end - borrowed a charging cable from a guy at work and it started charging straight away so presumably an issue with the cable itself. Thanks for your help though 👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,032 ✭✭✭Buffman

Some do and some don't, but where do you draw the line? With the power isolator having to be installed alongside the charger, someone could just steal the entire charger if they wanted.

Presumably you have a driveway to be charging in, probably be a better idea to get CCTV or a doorbell cam and set it to alert you when someone enters your driveway.

Oh that's a new one, haven't heard much of that.

How old your cable .? Interesting one to consider for future reference. Thanks 👌

Sounds like the CP (control pilot) wire or pins are broken in that cable, it's one of the two small connectors in the plug/socket that allow the car and charger to communicate with each other.

If it's brand new there should be no problem getting it replaced under warranty wherever you got it, then sell the broken one on adverts for parts.
