Got the Ohme Home Pro installed today, looks great and a tidy piece of kit. Installer didn't enable load balancing which has really, really annoyed me, especially when this is advertised as a key feature of the product. Seemingly an issue I can't fix without getting them back out here either, ffs.

Probably had no or little access to your tails. Bigger job. Most likely not their fault. Not all installs are the same. This will be at your cost. Can take a while to resolve CT clamp space issues in a cramped consumer unit.

Thanks, think we might be able to manage without it given we don’t have electric showers but I would have liked to have it. Have asked the question of the supplier anyway so we’ll see.

They should've mentioned it during the install. Sounds like they just wanted to get out of there as quick as possible

Exactly, they should have carried out a full install, is load management not required for the grant, there's a reason why.

I'd be getting on to them to come back and complete the install

OHME pro charger at home for a nissan leaf. Car has max ac charger of 6.6 as it gets that at the public ac fast chargers.

However it seems to get like 3.7kw from the ohme charger. Can't find any charger settings to change that

I live in the real world, yes they should have mentioned it during install no doubt about it I fully agree. But I also understand that the 'electricians' they employ are under the kosh to move between jobs quickly and anything remotely complicated or involves additional cost they'll leave to the office. That's facts.

Interested to know what the follow up call went like.

Looks to be 'locked' at the 16 Amp speed for some reason. Plenty of reasons that could be the case it seems, if it's a new install within warranty get onto the installer to have a look.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Do you have a 16a cable perhaps? This is limited to about the 3.7kW charge you are getting

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,177 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

I only know 3 people with OHME chargers and all 3 of them had to call the installer back to flick the switch to 32a charging.

They were apologetic and are sending a guy out tomorrow to fix it, so (hopefully) all will be grand in the end.

Apologies if this has been covered already, tis a long thread at this stage!

I am wondering if anyone has successfully installed a home charger for on-street charging?

For example would it be feasible to run a cable around the edge of the front garden to a point by the front wall (or bury it)?

I'd be very interested in getting an EV but have only on street parking and no charging at work etc.

Funny charging on my Zappi last night.

Normally the graph looks like this

    image.png

Car & Battery starts at 2am, battery charges about 4kW, car 7kW. Typical flat line till they're done. But last night was like this:

    image.png

Battery looks ok, but zappi/car was all over the place. Checked back and has happened a few times before, but very irregular.

    Any ideas on the cause?

Issue is cable possibly trailing across a footpath owned by county council. In Dublin council have asked people to not do this or remove chargers installed on the road that the council own. The typical advice is to avoid buying a full EV as long as you can. In some cases footpath is owned by management company, and if you play cards right you may get permission to dig up footpath and install a proper street unit, but typically they just reject the request.

The below story pretty much shows how messy that situation is at the moment, I know that's a private estate but I'm not aware of any councils allowing private individuals do it.

I think the lack of designated parking at properties is a major issue for putting in your own pedestal charger, and running a cable across the path is leaving you wide open for a claim, even with those cable tidy ramps.

And relying 100% on public charging won't be any cheaper that running an ICE as prices have increased to around the level of other fuels.

    Even worse last night.

    image.png

Only put 1% into the car. Mistake above too battery charges about 3kW not 4

    Anybody have any ideas?

Edit: just set to fast charge now and working fine, so issue only seems to be at night

Yeah Ive gotten one installed. I had raised the issue of charging at management AGM, and proposed that we should put in charge points for all units (all units have a defined/numbered parking spot) - was told committee would look into it. Couple of months later committee member who owns unit below mine said we could put in charge point for our 2 units as a demo of what it would look like for the rest of the estate, SEAI queried the install before giving the grant but accepted a letter from mgt company saying permission had been given for the install so no issues.

Sounds like a well ran MC and estate. You’re one of the lucky ones.

Have you got anything else big running at night? The zappi has a configuration (named something like max import capacity). If will reduce car charging to make sure you stay here that limit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 254 ✭✭pad406

No, not those 2 nights. Occasionally the washing machine may be on but that wouldn't be too big a draw.

Normally the grid import figure on the Solis would be hovering around the 10kW while both battery and car is charging, last night peak was 4.6kW, and that was only for a very small fraction of the 3 hours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,420 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

Disable the battery charge on the solis for the first 2 hours. That will rule in or out the storage draw.

    Stay Free

So, I just power cycled the Zappi yesterday. All fine last night, back to normal charging.

Check grid voltage during those funny results

    Hi guys,

We have recently bought an EV and want to install a Zappi charger.
We would prefer if the unit was not on the wall of the house and are looking for a pedestal.
Prices I see online seem excessive (€400+) and I was wondering if there is a trick I am missing somewhere.

Am I better off building a pillar with a few blocks or are these pedestals doing something magic I don't understand.

    Cheers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,315 ✭✭✭zg3409

A few blocks will be ok, or commission a local welder to make something and get it galvanized etc. Just beware the cabling to the location may need special armoured cable if underground outside and also a data cable for load sending. A wired internet connection may also be recommended so it may be best to put in ducting to main house. An electrician can advise. In what's needed etc. Most install a relatively large power isolator right next to the charger so allow for that and if you want a neat install plan well. You may also need some way of tidying up the cable it can be wrapped around the unit. Some have hid everything inside a fake esb meter cabinet. You want the zappi itself fairly high up so you can see the display and hit the buttons.

These are the voltages as taken from the inverter. 14th was the day it charged, charging times highlighted in green. Does it mean anything, indicate where the issue might be?
