Yeah he did make some derogatory comments in the run up to the 2015 contest, I'm surprised that was just brushed under the carpet.

On another note, is anyone here part of OGAE Ireland or familiar with them? It would be nice to meet some other Eurovision fans as none of my friends or family have the slightest interest, but I'm not really sure what's involved or what you get for the membership.

I'm a part OGAE Ireland! Membership for the year is just €26, and for that OGAE members often get first dibs on tickets before they go on sale to the general public. There's also meetups arranged throughout the year, and there's some pretty lively WhatsApp group chats too. I haven't been to any meetups but they seem like good fun, and it sounds like the kind of thing you're looking for if none of your friends are into Eurovision.

    Here's the membership form!

One negative thing I will say is it does appear, to me at least, to be a bit cliquey. The WhatsApp chats seem to be dominated by about 15/20 people, and last year it was decided that all discussion of Israel was banned. Like, you weren't even allowed mention the word Israel, which I found to be beyond silly.

The negative comments are just my subjective opinion though, others might say the opposite, so don't be put off. It's only €26, so I'd recommend signing up for the year and see if you like it, and if not then at least you'll know. Do it! 🙂

I think Eurofans can be guilty of ignoring unpleasant comments or actions if they come from someone they generally like. Carola seems very popular with the fandom, ditto Måns (albeit not as popular as Carola), so fans tend to look the other way if they say or do something disagreeable. If someone the fandom dislikes, say Philipp Kirkorov, made comments similar to the ones Måns' made, fans would have been screaming for a lifetime ban from the contest.

Thank you, great to hear some feedback from a member. Like you say it's fairly cheap so I suppose it's worth trying, and if I don't like it it's not the end of the world.

Early days I know, but I’m still not feeling the love for Austria aka Shakin’ Nemo, which has moved up in the odds. Also surprised that Sweden’s ‘I’m a lumberjack, and I’m okay’ is up there.

And don’t get me started on Israel - fool me once, etc. 🤨

All the songs are now available on Apple Music, so I’ll be rinsing these till May. 🙂

The semi-final running orders are due to be announced on Tuesday I believe. I really hope for a decent slot for EMMY, but I fear she might open the show (though I'd rather be first on than second on.)

Just a fun piece of trivia for Sunday night - on this day 29 years ago, the qualifiers for the 1996 contest in Oslo were revealed following a non-broadcast, audio-only preselection competition. It was (thankfully) the one and only time this format was used.

Yeah it's very likely we'll open. It's a better position than second or third anyway, and if we qualify it means we won't open the final. I feel qualification is a big if though, sadly.

I think Emmy (I never know whether to use all caps or not for her name) has a shot. It's not like two years ago when it was already known at this stage that we were no-hopers. We're in the same semi as the "raunchy" songs, so Emmy could do well offering something that will appeal to younger viewers and families. The staging will be vital though, if we get that right, I'd be fairly confident of qualifying.

Laika is doing very well on Spotify, top 15/16 or so. It could well get the 'family' vote, in contrast to the likes of Finland and Malta in the same semi.

I'm surprised that so many have lost confidence in Ireland's chances, most now seem to have it as either a borderline qualifier or a NQ. SF2 has gotten a lot stronger since Laika Party was picked, but I still think we're definitely among the stronger songs picked. Obviously running order and staging will tell us a lot more, but I still maintain we're a comfortable qualifier in around 7th/8th place.

I hope you're all right, it would be horrible to go straight back to NQing immediately after Bambie.

One thing that worries me is that Emmy did an interview with Eirevision the other day and said she wants to keep the Eurosong staging, just bigger. That doesn't give me much confidence tbh. I think it needs to be elevated a lot.

I hope they upgrade the dancers. The pair on the LLS were giving off Raygun vibes.

I agree that the Ukraine entry is going to struggle, since it's a bit "prog", not as upfront catchy pop. The band talks about the inluence of bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis and King Crimson in an interview here.

    New official video:

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Semi Final running orders will be revealed today! I think Emmy will likely open SF2.

It's the poorest Ukrainian entry since 2017. They don't have to worry of course, their entry could be a dog vomiting on stage for three minutes and they'd still qualify. And that was the case even before the war.

I didn't have any issue with Stefania winning three years ago. It wasn't my personal winner, but it was still a decent song and I didn't mind that Europe made a show of support to Ukraine in its time of need by handing it a huge televote score. But…in the event of a deterioration in Ukraine's situation in the coming months (which sadly might be likely), I really hope Europe doesn't come out and vote for Ukraine en masse again because it would be a shame if Bird of Prey won.

I'd be ok with that…it's being second or third on that we need to avoid, as well as being on right after a commercial break. Second tends to be the 'ballad' slot, so we might be alright there.

Remember Monday can definitely sing live, I still think the song is a bit of a mess though.

That must be Nigel with the brie...

Remember Thom Yorke saying he would love to represent the UK some years back? Why didn't they ever send him?

Because they felt that Radiohead’s music is ‘too’ upbeat.

What if they performed an upbeat catchy song for one night only? That would be worth seeing 😁

We're third in the running order which is not great, in between Montenegro and Latvia.

    Australia opening.

Happy enough with third for Ireland. We knew we'd be on early enough, and we're in between Montenegro and Latvia, two terrible songs.

Not great, but look at the positive: last year, the songs that were placed third in the running order in their respective semi-final qualified :)

Australia is an odd choice as opener, upbeat, yes, but maybe not "conventional" enough for an opening song. I said a few weeks ago that Malta, Finland and Australia are all going for the same voters and I thought there's a very good chance all three won't make it. I had initially predicted Malta would be the one to miss out, but the recent publicity for Malta and Australia's failure to pick up any sort of momentum started me thinking GoJo might be the one to fall at the semis. I think this seals it - GoJo will be forgotten while Malta and Finland will stick in voter's minds. I didn't think Finland was in any danger of missing out anyway, but being last in the semi on effectively guarantees them qualification.

It does mean, however, that if Erika draws first half, she could be on very early in the final.

Anyone heard anything about Ireland’s staging? I see the song is in the 10th position on the Spotify Eurovision 2025 playlist which is good. The staging will need to stand out being so early on. Not sure it’s a good draw for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 172 ✭✭Libertine07

Emmy said in an interview recently that she wants to bring the Eurosong staging, just bigger. Unless she's hiding something up her sleeve it's not sounding great. The staging director is Marvin Dietmann who can be a bit hit and miss (he did Conchita, Voyager and Sam Ryder's staging, but also Who The Hell is Edgar) so hopefully he can elevate it.

Sorry to sound so negative but I think we were already a borderline qualifier, and getting one of the two worst slots doesn't help at all. I know Bambie had a similar slot last year but at least we knew there was some vision and creativity there, so there was a good chance of some interesting staging, which we obviously got in spades.

I really do want us to qualify, so I hope the more optimistic ones are right!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,402 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Emmy says the staging will be elevated with more dancers and props etc but will retain the 'space' theme and silver costumes and so on.

It's not that bad a draw IMO - there are a lot of complete outsiders and possible NQs in that first half of the semi.

Must say, I am disappointed with the distinct lack of rock and metal songs this year. 😥

Where are the songs that make me want to chug a beer, find a blonde and get laid?*

*Not my words, the words of Marty Morrissey.
