Its a funny season, walk the league but that squad is going to be pulled apart over the next 2 summers.

PSG were just better, I can't fault the effort of any player last night. The game totally showed up how reliant our attack is on salah and Mendes did a great job at neutralising his threat.

well I’d like Jonathan David then. Just don’t rate nunez’s composure—he gives loads of energy sure and occasionally has moments of sheer class but he’s been given too much time and trust. He reminds me of Timo Werner the way he’ll do all the running, dribbling and hard work then stumble at the end or do something reckless.

yep, this happens every year people have short memories. He always has a drop off around the time of Ramadan or the Afcon cup

Johnathan David on a free transfer is an absolute no brainer to me.

Yep 100%. Given that we likely need to replace multiple attackers, along with other positions, getting one of his calibre on a free helps a lot

There's no way they'll give Salah the Balon after a last 16 exit in Europe - that's gone for him now

Free is free, but I don't think Jonathan David is the answer… whenever I see him he always seems a little, I dunno, lumbering or something. Like, he's quick on the sprint when he gets goin, but his footwork and close control always just look a bit slow and awkward to me. Decent enough goal return, but in a pretty poor quality league.

If we let a bunch of forwards go he's a decent bench option for depth - if he'd (doubtfully) take a reasonable wage - but I can't see him as the answer up front.

He scored against us this season. That's usually all we need.

What's funny is until Ronaldo came along the majority of Ballon d'Or winners were not UCL winners that year.

Timo Werner is a good comparison, he was another player that Klopp was very keen on before he moved to Chelsea. Both have the raw components to be phenomenal players but they have shown themselves to be lacking the mental strength to bring all the pieces together and fulfill their potential.

Ollie Watkins in prime position now for Balon D'Or 😉

Honestly not that p1ssed off about last night…and I won't be devastated if Newcastle beat us on Sunday ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Winning the League will be a monumental achievement for Slot and this squad...far beyond what any of us could have expected this year

He has been repeatedly linked with Tottenham since last December.

I think the decision to play almost the first 11 at home against Southampton on Saturday was a big part of last night. PSG rested basically their entire starting 11 at the weekend and they just had more energy as seen in the extra time.

I used to say it was harder to get out of klopps first 11 then it was to get on it but slott seems even more wedded to 13 players and rarely rotates. Maybe that's a sign that he doesn't trust the rest of the squad but it kinda feels like a self fulfilling prophecy at this stage.

Some of the front line players should have been rested against Southampton, I would have stated Endo, Elliot, quansa for starters and rested Konate/Grav/Salah. We could have still lost against psg but I don't get what slott did there and especially considering it will no doubt be the same team again against Newcastle on Sunday. It reminds me of Arteta playing saka for 90 minutes every game it was only a matter of time before he broke down.

I know this is all wise after the event but I hope we learn from this, you can't win on multiple fronts with the same 11 or so players playing against every minute of every game. Did Slott really not rate anyone outside of starting 11 to do any sort of job against bottom of the league side at home? It's nuts.

Slot really doesn’t see anything in him I guess. Gakpo was injured and got more time than him.
It’s such a strange situation and unfair on the player too.

    Fair play Curtis...

It's a cliche, but I don't think you can ever blame someone for stepping up in a shootout and having their shot saved (and I say that accepting that both Nunez and Jones hit pretty poor pens)

I don't think the weekend had any bearing at all on the result. For the entire 2nd half PSG were the ones who seemed to be tiring and we were looking like the only winner. It was the only time in the entire tie where we dominated for a sustained period.

They ceased back control in ET because their subs had much more quality, and therfore provided a greater impact. Whereas ours offered very little, Nunez, Gakpo and Jones were very poor, when they should have been dragging us through.

We just have to accept that we were beaten by the better team over the 2 legs, and move on.

Southampton came looking for a weaker team on Saturday and probably would have beaten the team that played Plymouth.

Yeah, most fans want 11 superstars on the pitch and 5-6 on the bench. Like on football manager.

It was only last week that Nunez started, scored and also won a penalty. Always fit, ready and available and even when not starting weekly. The kind of professionalism that is necessary from a squad player - being ready when needed.

And to your point about ‘he can be great or he can offer nothing’ it’s called form. Nunez is under a constant microscope and some fans are just unrealistic. At least you recognise he can be great.

There’s a lot of know-it-all and condescending opinions on this thread. A fan base that maybe are getting a bit spoilt.

Free isn't free, free transfers tend to cost a lot of money.

If Virg has signed and can't say it publicly for whatever reason that's probably the type of answer he would give, doesn't deny it or say he hasn't signed, just a bit of 'I dunno what's going on' waffle, then changes the subject

Mo would never get a penalty for that Mbappe challenge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,150 ✭✭✭Damien360

I thought the same. He dragged his foot behind to get the peno and he tried the same in the first half. Real do like a good moan !

tbh I think the CL is a pretty flawed format this year, especially the fact that teams like Villa and Dortmund are able to get into the quarter finals

Curtis has only taken one penalty before in a uefa youth league game against Napoli. Still can’t understand why Slot didn’t just give it to Gakpo for number 3. Or even Van Dijk. I guess the issue was we took off MacAllister, Jota and Diaz who would have all taken a penalty before Curtis/Nunez. Even Trent might have scored his but got injured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,150 ✭✭✭Damien360

We just got a terrible draw. If we got PSV, there wouldn't be a peep here. It should be a lesson that there is no need to panic in future about CL early losses. Top 8 will do, top of group is just not worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,613 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

No chance of Diaz taking one id say. Hates them (and bad at them).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,403 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Diaz has taken 3 or 4 pens in his career and missed 2 or 3 I think.

If we had everyone on the field yesterday it would have been Mo, TAA, Mac Allister, Szobozlai and VVD I'd guess.
