So much talk in recent years of players not having enough time to recover between seasons, I'll welcome having nothing to play for come April if it means our players have more time to be fit again for next season!

Poor Robbo btw, third time we've played on his birthday and we've lost all 3!

Yeah but the ideal scenario would have been to be able to rotate hard for the league games and really go for the CL ones - would have only been another 5 matches so not that much extra football.

Even the Mo criticism ignores the sheer number of minutes he's had to play.

Ah, I'm delighted to see Virg lift the EPL at a packed Anfield, parade etc, so this is nit picking but we might have used the squad a little better without harming league results.

Yeah had a look there and Mo has played 3600 minutes this season, equivalent to 40 full 90s. Dembele and Kvaratskhelia for example have 2400 (27 full 90s) and 2150 (24) respectively.

I think he kicks up a fuss if not playing,he is played when the option of rest to keep him onside.

PSG were on top in extra time when I thought we ran out of gas but if anyone should have won the game in 90 minutes it was ourselves really. We had some great chances. Hit the woodwork and PSG cleared a few off the line.

I like Diaz but I think I read last night that he only has 6 Goals/Assists since he scored the hat trick against Leverkusen in early November. Think he's played in 26 or 27 games since then. He's always busy but the end product usually doesn't match the industry.

He was out in his feet on 90 minutes, only gonna get injured if he stayed on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,652 ✭✭✭Talisman

It would have been interesting if the club had managed to trade Gomez for Gordon last summer. He had scored 12 goals and 11 assists last season. Diaz can match that number of goals but falls short on assists.

No surprise that Real have made an offer to Trent,as per Paul Joyce

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,816 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

What's surprised me more is that we haven't heard of ANY clubs approaching Salah or VVD, they've been able to since January. It's giving me a small amount of hope that they've already committed to Liverpool.

Fake Paul Joyce? Not seeing anything on this Twitter.

I fully expect that everything is already signed since the 1st January though.

I was also surprised Jota started. I actually thought he'd start Darwin, he was coming in hot after scoring and full of beans. Let him rub about early and soften them up, if playing well let him run himself into the ground, but if he's off then hook him and bring in Jota, who often does well when coming in when legs tire.

I'd certainly have been happier if Jota was standing over that penalty than I was waiting for Darwin.

Yeah, we deffo need an out-and-out number 9 in the summer. An interesting stat I read this morning

"Slot is already mindful of that and has lamented that too many matches have gone down to the wire during his first season in charge. For a team who are 15 points clear at the summit of the Premier League, Liverpool have only won nine of 46 games in all competitions by a margin of greater than two goals. A change in personnel, who can add a ruthless edge, is likely to be needed."

Also some comments by Virgil too

Discussions are continuing and, asked whether he would sign a deal, Van Dijk said: “I have no idea. I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely. I have no idea at the moment.

“It is not on hold. Nothing on hold. There’s just . . . I keep saying the same thing.

“Listen, there are ten games to go, and that is my full focus. If there is news, you guys will know it. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it.

“At the moment, I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face.”

Those comments from Virgil are baffling. I could understand any of the three moving, or the deal being done but kept under wraps, but for it to be so unknown it's utterly baffling

Now that the red mist has lifted, the lads were much more organised last night as I thought they would be. Just wasn't our day up front.

What an insanely tough tie to land in the last 16 and I'm sure the feeling is mutual from PSG that they've just come out of a war over 210 minutes.

As we close the season out, I really hope some of this time is used to trial things for next season. I'd love to see Mo played centrally for instance… he's lost some of his pace and shot-power, but his play making is better than ever and his in-the-box finishing is excellent. Would also let us give a little time to Chiesa on the right - just seems such a shame to be writing him off after so little time. Love to see what he could provide with a run of appearances (even off the bench) in a row. And at the very least it has the possibility of raising his value a bit if we do intend to sell - but I do think Gakpo, Mo, and Chiesa could be an interesting trio.

Sweat the asset - if he's not gonna be there next season, there's no need to worry about long term fitness etc…….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,397 ✭✭✭dogbert27

Chiesa is 1 game short of getting a PL medal.

I feel bad for him that he hasn't even gotten 5 minutes against the likes of Southampton

The contract question comes up after a loss, there's nothing to read into it. The club is once again making decisions that are data driven, there will be no place for sentiment on their part when it comes to decisions regarding the squad.

If all of three players are leaving then it's in the club's interest to keep the news quiet until deals are in place to sign their replacements.

If not all of them are staying, then it's in the interests of the team to keep it under wraps because the media stories could become toxic as everything gets over analysed these days and filter into the behavior of fans at games.

For now what is most important is that the players continue to deliver performances on the pitch. With 10 games to go in what will definitely have been a landmark season fans should just enjoy supporting the team and appreciate the players.

PSG was touted as a destination for Salah but looking at the youth that they have in attack would he fit in there?

Is Saudi his only realistic destination if he doesn't stay?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,564 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

I agree with what you're saying about keeping it quiet either way, I've no problem with us being kept on the dark while it's worked out behind the scenes. But what Virg is saying is that even he doesn't know. If that's true, it's crazy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,843 ✭✭✭✭8-10

It sounds like he's agreed not to sign anything until the title is won and is letting his agent handle negotiations

IIRC that's how Klopp signed his contract with Liverpool, he'd just go for a walk while his agent did the negotiations

Salah's competition for the Balon D'or appears to be Dembele and Raphina.

    Currently in all competitions:

    Salah 32 goals 22 assists

    Dembele 29 goals 6 assists

    Raphina 26 goals 13 assists

If PSG or Barca win the CL I can see one of those guys beating Mo to the trophy even if Mo adds another 10 goals and assists

Did the Ramadan fasting stuff Salah is doing start at the beginning of March it seems to have coincided with his drop in form if so, how long does it go on for??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 356 ✭✭Robert2014

They'll give the Ball D'Or to Mbappe. It's a popularity contest.

I expect we'll hear on the contract situation once the League is confirmed. If the League title is confirmed in April, with 4 or 5 games remaining, I'll expect to see links so any one leaving will get a send off with the League title.

He's played 3 games during Ramadan, 2 of them against PSG where he wasn't any worse than the rest of the non-fasting players and a game against Southampton where he played pretty well. I don't think it's been much of a factor honestly.
