If they have a bit left in them swap them with the front wheels and keep on trucking. Bit surprised you'd have to change them so quickly after only a year unless you are doing huge kms.

looks like I'll get 60,000kms out of the michelins I got with the tesla I have so I would go along with the above recommendation. Never saw that sort of longevity out of other tyres I've bought in the past. They are more expensive but seems to work out better over time.

Was sent the price for mine today. Even though I selected the black wheels that were free on the online build there is a charge on them and it mentions the performance tyres. Was able to add the iq drive like somebody here suggested. Those are the only options as I went with the colour black and will chance my arm without the heat pump. Still don't have an estimate on when it will arrive.

The performance tyres are a €480 option and not bundled in with the black wheels, which are a no-cost option. In other words, you shouldn’t have to pay anything if you just want black wheels.

The performance tyres are a ripoff IMO: you’re paying €480 for the difference between the 215s and the 235s.

Yep, but the person is doing me a favour ordering it with a discount. I'm not going to be doing any back and fourth like I would with a dealer. Never kick a gift horse as the saying goes.

I'm more worried about road noise in the cabin than the extra price. I take it I can't change to 215 when changing tyres as the wheels will be a different width?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 785 ✭✭✭Sam the Sham

    Wheels are the same width.

If the noise in the cabin is too much I'll change them to the thinner ones when they are out. Thanks.

I saw a Born vz video that I now can't remember, but they seemed to have more fun on the 215's because they were sqeeling with more rear body movement compared to the 235's where they said it was faster and more assured. I rarely drive in a "spirited" manor these days so would have happily taken the 215's for less noise, only really use power in a straight line these days.

I was told yesterday there’s about a 9 week wait from ordering at the moment.

But there’s a few ingredients garages around the country if you like the configuration they have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,345 ✭✭✭KCross

It wasnt in the base trim, it was standard in the plus and max trims.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 785 ✭✭✭Sam the Sham

You’ll get better mileage on the 215s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 914 ✭✭✭Zurbaran

From what I saw elsewhere it was a lot longer. I'd have a bit of a problem if it's 9 weeks. Still haven't got an estimated time on my one.

Acording to engineering explained the difference in efficiency is close to nothing when it comes to width and more got to do with wheel size and and tyre wall size. Noise wasn't taken into account in his measurements and that is what I would be concerned with.

    Interesting.

As far as noise is concerned, the OEM tyres (in both sizes) are the Bridgestone Turanza 6, which are the quietest tyres available (also very quick to run out of tread, in my experience). The 215s have a rating of 67dB. The 235s have a rating of 68dB. I'd say that that would be barely noticeable.

My issue is with VW charging a premium of €480 for the wider tyres. I gather there is an ugly piece of trim that goes on the wheel arches also (anyone know what the purpose of this is?). A new set of the Turanza 6 in the 235 width costs €900 from Oponeo. A full set of 215s costs €860. That's only a €40 difference, not a €480 difference.

When the OEM 215s run out, my plan is to look at the 235 options then, assuming the extra wheel arch trim is not necessary.

I think you'll get the base GTX quick enough as some of them have been delivered already but the GTX Perf Plus seems to be taking longer (initially at least). Cant see you getting one in 9 weeks unless things have changed recently.

Still waiting on mine, ordered in Oct! 🤨

Its in the country, just not outside my house!

May Joe Duffy VW in North Dublin were leading me on to get a sale?

She was trying to get me to look at one of the configured ones in the country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 785 ✭✭✭Sam the Sham

I also ordered my GTX Performance Plus in mid-October. Expecting delivery next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,345 ✭✭✭KCross

I didnt think there were any GTX Perf Plus's in the country until the last 2 weeks or so and they would be the first deliveries.

Was it the base GTX or the Perf Plus she was pointing you to?

It could also be the case that dealers have ordered a bunch themselves back in Oct and maybe there will be stock appearing each week now. Hard to tell what is happening behind the scenes really but I dont think there are any GTX Perf Plus cars in customers hands here yet.

I specifically soec’d the Plus but you know yourself with these dealers. She could very well have been talking about a Golf as it was all over the phone. I’m due a call back later this week. Might get some clarity. She did say there’s was some production restrictions on colours.

There is an extra wheel trim thing but it wouldn't be needed if you were putting them on as replacements. It's just some eu rule.

Only issue may be the turning circle. The wider tyre specced cars have a slightly bigger turning circle i believe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 459 ✭✭Tech_Head

Do you have more info on this trim? I can see it referenced on my order as “1NL Trims for alloy wheels” but can’t find any pictures / reference of it elsewhere. Apparently I have them on my current 18” wheels too 🤷‍♂️

It’s the black trim on the arches in the pictures.
It wouldn’t bother me. First item spec’d is the spider wheels on mine if I was buying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 459 ✭✭Tech_Head

Interesting and thanks for that. I don’t have that on my current car but it says it’s listed on the spec of my current ID 3. I was expecting it to be on the alloy somewhere

Just a heads up for anyone purchasing the GTX, there's very few premium tyres available for 215/45/20 and 235/40/20, not sure about 225. My personal preference is Michelin and the only options are Pilot Sport EV which are shite or Pilot Sport 4 S, which are €330 per corner (which I reluctantly went with as I know the likes of a P Zero just isn't quite as good)

I'm looking at a new set of wheels on my Born and have to step down to 19" to get the full selection of UHP tyres that are also 2/3 the price.

There are some GTX Performance Plus variants, already with customers.

i sat into one on Feb 8th, it was being collected later that day, and he said a few had already been collected in previous weeks. Lovely car, was very impressed

Will this have v2h and v2g? I see it mentioned on 77kw id3's in other countries

MEB based cars "support" it but it would require a new charger in your house that is many thousands to buy and Im not sure its even available to buy here.

So, I would forget any notions of having V2H or V2G in the medium term on this car.

It doesnt have V2L either, which is disappointing from VW, as other cars like eNiro etc have it for a while now.
