A few of my friends believe that his body is likely just done after years of rugby and injuries. He might seem young but he's got an incredibly high number of minutes on the clock and Connacht have consistently rushed him back from injury due to our lack of cover.

Not confirmed at all but I can definitely see how he looks good in one or two game runs but seems to have issues if overused.

I agree with this. While his goal kicking certainly was a welcome addition his line kicking was poor and he doesn't offer much of a threat at all in open play anymore

If that's accurate then it could be just what we need. Wilkins is a decent coach but he doesn't appear to be the person we need to build a high performing coaching team it or get the best out of your squad through man management.

Ireland A got only two tries. 1 (first half)=Bolton,2 (second half)=Gavin. Both two men was very good at defence. Aunger's scrum work D. Murray's LO both very good. Jansen maybe stayed on the pitch through the fulltime.

They seemed healthy at the end of the game.

As much as I hate to see constant chopping and changing, any change at the top is good imo, as the current coaching ticket has sent out some of the most unprepared teams I can remember ( To my eye). I'm all for leaving coaches in palce but you need to see SOMETHING to make you feel like there's progress being made.

I did enjoy having JJ on board to maek his kicks but I won't be losing too much sleep over it. Similar to Kilgallen and Tom Farrell Its not a gret sign of Munster that they seem to consitently pick up player who are in and out of our team

I wonder could we tempt Joey Carbury home?

Don't think he's worth the risk with his injury profile to be honest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 860 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

It was Harry Byrnes injury profile that got me thinking 🤔

Treviso is very strong. They won against Ulster (34-19). In this game, no Italy representataive in the team. Treviso starters: 15~9 Smith, Mendy, Fekitoa(ex Munster), Zannon, Gallagher, Albonoz, Uren, 1~8 Gallo, Male, Zilocochi, Marini, Snyman, Izokor, Zuriani, Henofihi .

Some players are foreigners. At second half, Ulster received 3 yellow card, and it caused directly their defeat. Even so, Treviso was strong enough. In the Second half, Ulster received 3 yellow cards (including very unlucky one). Directly it's their cause of defeat. But even so, Treviso was strong enough for current Connacht. I think that especilly t6, 10, 15 are strong and skillful. Connacht needs huge defending efforts at open plays.

Benetton have just announced that Marco Bortolami is leaving his contract early at the end of the season. It'll be interesting to see what effect that has on their squad's motivation.

It's also the same Treviso team that shipped 40 points to zero away to ospreys. Connacht should be targeting 5 points here.

In the short term looking at the other fixtures this is a good weekend for Connacht to leap up the table to in or around the play offs. It has to be a 5-0 result really if we are to give ourselves any sort of slim chance of Top 8.

After that I'm not confident for any of the next 4 league games but we have to give ourselves a chance. We have no margin for error this weekend.

Hard to see it. Joey had neither luck nor love within the Irish system and is now getting plenty of game time in Bordeaux where he's surely on great money. And it's not like he could play himself back into Irish contention, that boat has sailed.

    100% agreed.

He's also half way through a two year contract at Bordeaux and getting regular game time. I don't see why he'd want to move this Summer unless Bordeaux want to replace him.

He'll also be EQP via his mother this Summer which will make him more interesting to Premiership clubs.

Mack Hansen to sign a 2 year contract extension. Will be on a central contract with IRFU so should free up some money for Connacht. A good chunk of which will probably have to be spent on a new 10.

With Hanrahan gone and possibly Jack and Josh leaving, might Ben Healy and Charlie Tector be realistic options? Healy is not getting a look in for Scotland and will be IQ again in about one and a half years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,418 ✭✭✭testtech05

Bar goal kicking is Healy any better than what we already have? Admittedly I haven't seen an awful lot of him over the last season or more but he seems to be way down the pecking order with Edinburgh.

The news about Mack is great and well deserved

Even if Healy would be IQ again in 18 months it does very little to help justify recruiting him to the IRFU. He isn't the kind of player we need anyway.

If Harry Byrne could keep himself fit I'd be asking the IRFU to let us put a serious deal on the table for him.

It looks like Ross Byrne is off to England anyway. Pity we couldn't get him. He's not great but he's solid.

Ahhh now, Ross Byrne has 20+ Irish caps, about 150+ Leinster caps and is a high quality player. Top end kicker and decent game manager.Perfect age and durable as well. If we get anyone close to his standards we will be doing very well.

I would say he had multiple options in Ireland, France, UK and further afield.

    Great news on Mack!!

There's another Connacht Aussie could do with a central contract as well.

New Dexcom stadium needs some popular players. From the point of view, I think that Connacht is in ideal position. Connacht have a strong and stable pack include Cian (hopeful) Murphy, SHL, Boyle, Jansen, Joyce, Murleys and front rows. Now Mack remains, so Connacht can make good backline line-ups for example (imo) 9 M.Devine or Murphy, 10 Forde or Naughton, 11 Hansen or Smith, 12 Gavin or J.Devine, 13 Hawkeshaw or Ralston, 14 Bolton, Treacy or Mullins, 15 O'Connor, Jennings or Treacy. I think that (coming 2 years) it's enough to be best 8 in the league. The problem will be defending abilites of them. The supporters may need some patience.

From Wilkins interview with the 42. Looking at extending Ioane and are in negotiations. Trying to sign jack Carty on again too. No mention of a new 10 at all and stated both Forde and Hawkshaw are not 10s but utility backs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,663 ✭✭✭FACECUTTR

He absolutely should be on one.

Starting to see Finlay being discussed as a potential Lion - now wouldn't that be something?

It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the 6 nations plays out for him, and whether Furlong comes back at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,085 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Don't see why not, he's been excellent and Fagerson is the only real lead candidate in Furlong's absence. I'd personally be very surprised if Furlong plays again this season, let alone between now and the Lions announcement.

That would be a terrible move on both of those players, JC has long since seen his best days and just isn’t reliable enough anymore. Ioane the same v.unreliable off the boot but can produce good running options against weaker sides. Ben Healy would be a better option than either of those, not the most dynamic 10 but able to play the game in the right areas with great kicking and take points when on offer. Our lack of ability to close out games or lose big leads has a big impact on our current league position and I think some of that is due to having such unreliable kickers that even when we win penalties or turnovers we can’t capitalise by getting distance from hand or the ball through the posts.

I accept Healy has fallen well below expectations this season at Edinburgh but was impressive with Munster and in his first season in Scotland, he seems reasonably robust too, which is something that H. Byrne and to a lesser extent Frawley struggle with. They’d equally be an upgrade if they could stay fit. I had hoped that Forde could make the transition to 10 but his kicking from hand has been underwhelming and fails to get us the field position/release of pressure we need in games. His ability to play off 10 is so valuable I think we waste him (bit like Frawley) as a utility back.

I don't Ben Healy is a serious option. He's got a big boot but he's just not the quality of player we want have running the attacking talent we can put on the pitch. He's looked poor in the matches I've watched him play for Edinburgh. Also, I suspect the IRFU wouldn't be particularly keen on bringing him back. He played for Scotland A in November so he's still NIQ for almost three more years.

I think I need to hire whatever PR company that Ben Healy has hired because he always has people defending him online despite him never having delivered performances to merit that. At Munster he had one short stint where he was 1st choice when Crowley was very young and Cadbury was injured. After that he was third choice. Moved to Scotland where the hype seems to have followed him but once he was judged on performances he dropped down the pecking order very quickly.

Not saying he's a terrible player, big and robust with a big boot but he's a reserve player at URC level; every coached he has had has judged him to be that level and no team with any ambition is looking at him as a 1st choice 10.
