Earthrod and bonding is the killer here. Unfortunately required though.

You can get another quote from another sparks for the earthrod and bonding then compare back but you are now dealing with 2 contractors etc

Nobody can tell you if it's expensive or otherwise without actually seeing what's involved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 307 ✭✭cr-07

Apparently Fokearn can because they gave me that price from only seeing a photo of my fuse board & without a site visit 😂

I can’t say you’re getting ripped off or not but it’s certainly seems to be at the higher end based purely on your description. As I said every install is different but I would suggest you get one or two more prices if you haven’t already. You’re right to pay a bit more tethered, it’s way more convenient.

Ya, these lads who do these installs have set prices, regardless of difficulty. Customers who have a difficult install win and customers with simple install pay over the odds.

€400 for an earth rod and bonding is very reasonable imho

they have to get a cable from your fuseboard to a position outside

    Break open your path

    Sink a metal bar

    Connect it

Cement back over and tidy up

they also have to get an earth from your fuseboard to your hot press and connect all the pipework

if you have gas they also have to connect an earth wire from your fuse board to your gas meter

they’ll then have to test and certify this(along with your charger)

id be surprised if you could get another rec to do it cheaper

For getting from fuseboard → outside, do they have to chase the wall?

Also, forgive my ignorance, but why would they need to get an earth from the hot press?

Just trying to figure out what sort of mess/cleanup will be needed post install. Our front drive is completely cemented, but would possibly like to get a new driveway in the future. Should we be looking to get the earth rod installed in a different location for that reason? Or would it make much of a difference?

We don't have gas so no work needed there.

anyone have any experience on costs to swop out a charger ! grant received and all wiring is to spec and code buts its a wallbox and lots of issues, if i purchase my own charger thinking hypervolt, whats a sparky gonna charge roughly to swop it out ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,909 ✭✭✭meercat

    For the earth rod

unlikely they’ll chase the wall. Probably bring it down in trunking and drill out down low,or drill out the back of distribution board and conduit surface outside

The path will have to be dug up to sink the earth rod and cemented over to leave a flush finish with the top of the new green box.

    For the bonding

A new 10mm has to be run between the hot press cylinder and your distribution board. All the pipe work has to be connected to this cable

He may go straight up into your attic space (surface through the room above your board)and through your attic to the hot press

Your kitchen sink and pipe work needs an earth also(if metal)This can be taken locally off the nearest socket

All en-suite and bathroom pipes need cross bonding (cable between pipes)

That's because from a photo you can see the size of the tails/incoming cables into the Consumer unit from the Meter Cabinet.

If you are competent enough, its only 3 wires.

If you are not, then RECI or someone competent enough.

Bit of drilling to allow for the new screw holes in the different charger but you may be looking at 2 hours labour charge for a RECI. Could be done in a lot less but they will price for half a day there if going through a business.

Got the BG Sync Energy installed today from Fokearn.

Now that it’s night, I realise how bright the LED light actually is. Want to reduce the brightness but can’t find the setting in the Sync Energy app - any pointers?

Got the hypervolt 3 installed yesterday, very happy with it and on a superficial level it looks a lot better than my neighbour's zappi imo. Was going to go for SyncEv with Fokearn but went with a slightly more expensive independent electrician and I'm glad I did. He did it properly coming from the fuse board when Fokearn said they'd just come from the meter box. He did have to lift several floor boards and run the cabling in under a suspended floor, took him over 3 hours but the end result is very neat and includes a CT Clamp so I can see the whole house consumption. Well worth the few hundred extra I feel

Apparently you need to change the account type under General Settings in the app to Installer Mode, then turn off the house Wi-Fi. The charger should go into Bluetooth mode (yellow LED) and you can connect using the password (should be on the paperwork given to you by the installer). Fairly involved and I've not done it myself.

Why it can't be an option available for the 'home' user to amend the brightness is pure stupid….

most chargers now a days will also have cables for a CT for dynamic load balancing

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,179 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Yes. Additional wire or 2. The diagrams are very easy to follow and most of them just connect into a specific port.

I added a CT clamp to my eddi last year on the inverter supply so I could read the Giv Energy inverter on the MyEnergy app. It’s very straight forward for anyone competent enough.

But I take your point. If you’re not confident around electrics etc, best to leave it to a professional.

Should the Isolator switch not be higher off the ground ?

anybody have any thoughts on this unit? I need to check it’s on the grant list and it does say another small external box for load balancing . 3 year warranty, solar capable, 5m tethered, app etc. €300 ex vat .

if it’s grant allowable and it’s installed for 300 by a rec that’s net €300 ex vat.

I have one ~6 months. Does the job fine. Is on the grant list. I plug and play mostly, but have used the apps scheduler. I haven't tried to use Solar capability etc. Connecting to the car can be a little finicky but i now have the knack.

Overall, quite happy and for 300e, hard to go wrong was the way i looked at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 103 ✭✭carbuncle

good to know it’s on the grant list thanks. What’s the knack for connecting to the car?

Is there a separate box for load balancing?
Is the integral e off fine by installers or is a second needed?

I have a 6 year old zappi, not a bother with it. I only charge using the cars timers but did try with solar as a test when I got panels in but I get 8c a unit more selling to the grid than my nigh rate so what’s the point. I also feel the constant stop/start charging with solar can’t be good for the charge point or car.

This is for my friend who is on a budget and does not have panels but once I found it then I may well replace my zappi with one when it fails. I don’t really see the point of apps with charge points myself.

    nice job

You did the right thing getting it wired back to your main distribution board

I know it was a bit extra cost wise for the additional work/labour but there are some companies taking the easy way out and connecting to the meter box as standard when this should only be done as a last resort

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,353 ✭✭✭✭listermint

That's a space thing in the meter box. And nothing to do with safety at all. The right thing... meaning handy for the esb in future. Other than that it serves no real purpose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭hero25

The knack is simply finding the right "feel" for the connection, nothing major!

yes, there's a small load balancing box came with it and the electrician has that connected in the meter box.

BTW: usual charge rate is 6.6kw (despite it stating 7kw, maybe its my set-up)

re: Is the integral e off fine by installers or is a second needed? - Sorry, i dont know what I'm being asked!!

Have a Tesla ordered and looking to sort out the home charging situation, which is proving a bit frustrating (although I definitely should have done more research on this point).

I naively ordered the Tesla wall connector thinking that would be the most obvious fit, but as I've done more research on this it turns out this wall connector doesn't have dynamic power management capabilities. That is of course, unless you order a Tesla approved power meter through a Tesla certified installer (none in Ireland currently). This seems pretty p*ss poor imo, I had thought Tesla are supposed to be at the forefront of the EV movement but their own home chargers seem to be inferior to anything else on the market.

My stupid question is thus - are we okay to go ahead and look at the likes of a Zappi home charger? Would this work with our new Model 3 in terms of (a) actually charging the car and (b) compatibility with the Tesla app?

I used a Zappi with my M3 for 2 years and it works well, you should look at the Hypervolt too.

There's no integration with chargepoints and the Tesla app. Each chargepoint has it's own app.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,564 ✭✭✭Underground

Thanks, that’s very helpful. Still can’t get over how the Tesla charger lacks such basic / must have features!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 595 ✭✭✭JohnySwan

Ya it's a pity because one of the most annoying things about the M3 is removing the plug/opening the charge flap. The button on the Tesla plug is very handy.
