As with the above posts I put through an order with rathwood last week for 30 x 13kg bags and got message to say stock expected on 26th March. I have ordered in the past with the jumbo bags or individually bagged but never such a wait for stock. I went back looking for cancellation as If i knew no stock I would not have put through order. It looks like all their timber products are awaiting stock.

A different supplier told me that as customer orders are placed via Rathwood that they place a large order to import from UK. Would explain delays and how they operate.

After cancelling with Rathwood, I ordered a pallet from Boyle's on Tuesday. Courier rang today and it's coming tomorrow. Normal level of service.
Rathwood have a banner on their website "Same day dispatch guaranteed". They're a bit cheaper but I couldn't be putting up with that level of messing to save a few quid.

Big delay on the coal coming from Rathwood too

What you getting with Boyles? I've used them twice for ash and olive and fairly happy.

A pallet of oak this time. I've gotten ash before and very happy with it but have heard that oak burns longer and is the same price as the ash. How did you find ash v olive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,093 ✭✭✭shoegirl

Yeah likewise ordered same. Also had a previous in stock order that took 2 full weeks to arrive and came in 2 different deliveries.

Olive is a slow burner alright, I wouldn't put on a fire for long, just about 5 hours, so don't mind if it burns quick and hot.

I’ve gotten 2cbm oak off them before and happy enough with it, a good mix of larger logs and smaller ones for infilling before lighting

    https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2025/0310/1501230-sales-breach/

Three retailers have pleaded guilty to sales pricing breaches at Dublin District Court.

Lifestyle Sports (Ireland), DID Electrical Appliances, and Rathwood Home & Garden World were ordered to pay €1,000 each to the Little Flower Penny Dinners charity and to pay the costs of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), which brought the prosecutions.

The prosecutions were brought following online sweeps conducted over the 2023-2024 winter sales season, including Black Friday.

These are the first prosecutions under new sales pricing legislation introduced in 2022.

The new law requires traders to base any discount on the lowest price in at least the previous 30 days, and to display this price clearly on any price tag or advertisement.

The CCPC said a number of other traders have been investigated and further prosecutions may follow.

The maximum fine per offence is €5,000 but the CCPC said changes to the law are needed to give it the power to impose large fines for serious offences - for example, fines that are a percentage of a business's turnover.

The CCPC said this is a priority for it.

Commenting on the prosecutions, CCPC Chair Brian McHugh said: "Misleading sale discounts harm consumers and harm competition. It is vital that traders are transparent with consumers, displaying prices clearly and accurately.

"Businesses must be able to compete openly and honestly, and consumers must be able to shop with confidence."

DID was ordered to pay €2,460 in costs to the CCPC, Lifestyle was ordered to pay €3,567, while Rathwood was ordered to pay €3,444.

Fair play to the CPCC for clamping down on the fake sales. I hope they will tackle the furniture industry next, Im in the market for a sofa at the moment and literally every sofa you see has has a price sticker along the lines of 'Was €2,999 now €1,999'. It also applies to beds & mattresses in the same shops. The entire industry is built on fake sales and they are all doing it.

Homestore and More - "They're all half price and once there gone, there gone…"

…excepting the minor detail that they were never sold at full price to begin with.

Speaking of Rathwoods, finished up the pallet a couple of weeks back. With the warmer weather on the weekend, pulled out the circular saw and got myself a couple more fires.

Word of warning for anyone considering the same, plenty of nails in the wood so make sure you have a decent set of safety boots on, as it gets messy very quickly.

Yep this is one I’ve never got my head around, how they get away with it 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,808 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

I found the circular saw too dangerous and used a hand chainsaw instead, much faster and i felt, far safer.

I made two separate heaps of wood with nails and non nail. Picking the nails out of my stove afterward is a PITA and I'm afraid they might get stuck or damage in/the riddling mechanism, i was thinking of putting some chicken wire over the grate next time to catch them, has anyone any other ideas how to deal with this?

Yeah that looks poor when compared to the crate in my pics above.

crate before this one I got from Boyles and it was great

I ordered 2m of oak from Rathwood about 6 weeks ago. It was meant to be due this week but date changed to middle of April. It only cost €290 and I hope the logs are decent sized.

While I was waiting I bought 1m of Ash from Boyles. It cost €267. Looked decent in the crate, but the litter layer was hiding a lot of smaller pieces inside.

a lot of it is, won’t be buying again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,093 ✭✭✭shoegirl

I use a pallet buster to pry it apart and a hammer/crowbar to pry out the nails.

Then I dry them for 6-12 months and finally cut up with a sabre saw. Its great to get a fire going and since I get clean planks out of it, easy to stack for air drying

    It is timber related 😅

Picked up a log for the fire last night and got a little scare, the log wasn't too happy about it's current predicament 😂

I used a jig saw & put the pieces with nails aside and hammered those out at a later time.
If I were doing it again, Id consider discarding the pieces with nails (after cutting around them). It was satisfying to have very good kindling once the job was done. 🙂

The first crate I bought, I turned on its side to store the logs (in a garage) & reduced the depth with a jigsaw. That was really handy.

I had my whole thing cut and stacked in 35 mins. Burning it on an open fire so dont care for the nails. Weather was too good on the weekend to spend time busting up pallets.

Gold. I wouldn't be too happy if I was about to be incinerated either.
